Trivial Tuesday

Not sure if I'll make this a regular feature or not, but since I have a lot of trivial knowledge rolling around in my skull, I thought it would be a good idea to put some out there for your enjoyment.

............................................................................................................................................................

Cashews grow inside a false apple surrounded by a coating related to poison ivy, Cashews are actually fruit seeds instead of true nuts.

The name of the Soft Drink Pepsi was derived from it's pharmaceutical use as a cure for dyspepsia or heartburn.

Seaweed is not actually a plant but a type of algae.

Many brands of ice cream use a very fine sawdust as filler and carageenan from seaweed for texture.

Lyndon Johnson loved Fresca so much he had a soda fountain installed in the White house that dispensed only that particular soft drink.

The number 13 is considered unlucky by some because it breaks with nature's cycle of 12 hour days 12 hour nights and 12 months in a year.

Children do not develop a knee cap until 10 to 12 years old. before that it is still a cartilage plate.

Fat free and low fat products replace the fat with sugar, which totally negate any diet or health benefit.

North Americans eat so much corn, corn sweetener, corn fed livestock and corn by products that when scientists test human skin samples and measure the isotopes it shows we are made up mostly of corn.

The first public Television transmission was performed on Oct. 3, 1922. The images were sent over a phone line.

Sake is not really wine. It is actually rice beer. Wine is made from fruit.

Potatoes were originally cultivated in the Andes over 7000 years ago. Conquistadors brought them to the new world in the 16th century, but they did not become a staple of the European diet until the 1780s.

Garlic gets stronger the finer you chop it.

Humans flatulate 20 to 60 times per night while sleeping.

Hope those bits of useless information do you more good than they did me.

Hmmm...I'm kinda stuck at the sawdust in ice cream fact. That really creeps me out.

I'm ignoring the sawdust/ice cream thing, because I like to live in a make-believe world where no one would do such a thing to my beloved ice cream...

BUT, I do consider my self well-informed on a myriad of topics after reading this post! Thanks, Hammer! :0)

Thanks for the change of address note Hammer! Corn huh? Reminds me of a conversation at the ballpark one night...too much beer.

So now when someone says I'm corny, I can whole-heartedly agree with thim!

didn't know that about the kneecaps. I'm a little skeptical of the corn stuff, though. Interesting about the fat-free and low-fat one.

Thanks for giving me something to think about this morning!

Seems to me I remember one orange juice years ago used wood as their "pulp"~ I think it was AWAKE.

And only 20-60 times a night... I'm a freak I suppose :o)

Not entirely correct. Sake is rice liquor, like whiskey or rum. It's not beer - no hops.

Interesting...

up to 60 times? I wonder what you have to eat for that to happen.

Hammer,

Great Trivia. You may want to look up some more obscure stuff at nofrigginclue.com.

Thanks for JP's new address...I was going cold turkey there for a while not reading his blog.

kat: Look on the label for cellulose.

kuckie: thanks for visiting :)

jp: where do you think I get these things ;)

liz: barump bump! ;D

Janet: I look at the posters at the pediatricians office while I wait :)

Cheesy: yep and sunny delight contains wood rosin

athgorn: thanks for visiting: Sake isn't distilled like liqour but brewed like beer, I didn't know hops were required of beer though.

jenafear: supposedly it's due to the relaxation of the muscles. But I bet it's beer.

I enjoyed. I'm wondering about the sugar in low-fat sour cream. I need to check that out...

another kat concerned about the sawdust/cellulose... You have a reference for that?

Devilbluedress: Some low fat dairy products add extra lactose, but they don't have to list it. I was mainly talking about supposed diet foods like and low fat snack products.

katherine: here you go:
Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC):
derived from the bulky components, or pulp cellulose, of plant material, and chemically derivatized to make it water soluble from http://www.foodsci.uoguelph.ca/dairyedu/icingr.htm

I disagree wholeheartedly about the corn thing. If scientists cut me open to examine isotopes I am sure they would find I am made mostly of red wine.

If that fart number is an average, it's probably my son who's skewing the curve - upward.

Oh, hell - as long as we're throwing out useless crap, I might as well.

Garlic is a member of the lily family.

Rose hips (rose fruit) have a higher concentration of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) than any citrus fruit.

A group of crows is called a "murder".

Along the knee cap thing. Children don't develope a hard (bone) cheek bone till they are 9 or older. We learned that from experience when Kiddo got seriously (like ambulance) hurt.

Also, that's why you look at the labels of products more for sugar and carbs, instead of it saying low fat. If it's low fat and low sugar and low carbs then you win all around.

Hey!!! if we are made of mostly corn, maybe that solves the whole Why is there corn in my vomit question. heheheheh

That was quite entertaining!

Beer existed before they added hops. Hops were added later to the recipe to provide a more bitter flavor and better taste.

That was kind of cool about the corn. Never heard that one before. Also about the potatoes. You would think they had those in our staples long before they did. But our knowledge of some stuff is just weird and how we obtain it. LOL... Have a great day Hammer.

What is wrong with you! You shouldn't know things like this just off the top of your head! You and my fiance are a crazy wealth of worthless knowledge! Weirdos!...I mean that in the nicest way possible!

Queen: lol!

Jami: I only knew two of those, the garlic is new to me :)

Burfica: I didn't know the cheekbone thing, and I thought unknown corn was in poop not vomit :)

mushy: Good deal :)

Paul F: Thanks, I used to brew but I didn't know if hops were part of the original equation.

Tweety: Also potatoes contain almost all of our nutritional needs.
Until fried at least :)

Jenny: I've always been weird like that :)

Nice work, mate

As you know, I have a semi-regular feature called Trivia Pursuit on my blog.

Re: 13, I think there was some sort of biblical connection to the fact that it was considered unlucky.

Cheers

David

OMG. I just wrote a post about my fear of this and I go and read this tidbit. *sob* I'll sleep alone forever!

With this much trivia swirling around in your cranium, this would, indeed, be a terrific regular feature.

Only.....please keep the ice cream stories under wraps 'til...you know...summer is over.......please, please, please!!! There's so little left to enjoy these days!!!

Thank you, sir.

the term "graveyard shift" came from a time when a string from the deceased coffin was lead to a bell hanging overhead - if the person was truly dead they could not pull the string - the "graveyard shift" was a person staying up all night next to the gravesite to make sure they had not buried a live person.

p.s. - there is also a component of transmission fluid in ice cream - if you want pure - stick with haagen dazs.

I particularly enjoyed the flatulence stat. I've observed that in my dog. She's passed some stinkers that I was baffled she slept through.
