Hammer's Disney World and Orlando Guide

As soon as the kids get out of school this week we are on our way to Disney World. I'm not so excited about it myself but the youngins love that shit.

I've learned to work the system. Here are some tips that will save your ass and help you have a much better time.

Stay off property. You will actually be closer to the parks because you won't have to walk your ass off to get out of the resort and to the parking lot. Disney properties have food courts and snack areas but the food sucks and costs and an arm and a leg. They've got you trapped because they make it such a pain in the ass to get out and go to a real restaurant.

Stay in a hotel with continental breakfast. You will save a ton of money and can pack up some fruit and things to take with you. This also will save time, and from standing in lines and dealing with hungry cranky kids.

Get to the parks early, If you get there as they open the gate, you will be able to ride twice as much and actually walk on to some of the bigger attractions right away. While everyone else is eating at the Shoneys, you can be enjoying the parks while it's still fairly cool and uncrowded.

Bring bottled water and snacks in a backpack. This will save your ass. Disney's Bottled water is expensive. Hot dogs and pretzels are 5 bucks each. I bring cookies, fruit, nuts and crackers. The kids will love you for it. It will save you and your wallet from collapse. You can also refill the bottles at the water fountain if you are as cheap as I am ;)

Don't buy park hopper tickets. You will actually save money by planning ahead and buying your park tickets individually. You would have to be super-human to be able to go from park to park over the course of a week. I've done it, it sucks and is very expensive. Buy your ticket at the gate and enjoy yourself. They will stamp your hand so you can come back later that day. This will also help in case someone wants to go do something besides the parks. They won't feel like they are wasting their tickets.

Leave early: If you get to the park early you can do tons of stuff, get out of there in the early afternoon and go have lunch somewhere off property. Kissimi has tons of decent family restaurants that cost much less than the vile swill they serve at the parks. You can rest up, change clothes and go back to the park later if you want. Save your ticket and don't wash off your hand stamp.

Visit Universal studios, It's a 15 min drive right up I-4. The tickets are cheap and there are two huge parks with attractions that kick Disney's ass. Plan on two days there. They also have better restaurants and souvenirs so you can take it easy and stay the day.

Don't kill yourself. People go to these parks thinking they have to ride everything and see everything. Make a plan and decide what you want to see and do, get a park map and go have fun. If you don't get to everything, so what?... Some stuff sucks anyway, just go visit what looks interesting to you.

Use Fast Pass...Here's the trick, you can get a fast pass for a popular ride, go mess around and do other things. Your pass will tell you to come back in 40 min, then you can walk straight onto your ride. Sometimes they will let you have two fast passes at a time. This is great for people like me who get pissed at standing in a line for 2 hours for a 2 min ride. Watch out, when your fast pass time comes around, you will be walking right past people that have been standing in line in the hot sun for hours. They will want to pummel you.

Stay healthy: Florida is hot. Use sunscreen, drink lots of water, eat light, take it easy and don't get sick.

Wear good shoes: There will be a shitload of walking, wear good tennis shoes and thick socks.

Be careful of outside attractions. Many of these are complete scams. I paid 30 bucks to get into the Ripley's museum...it had one and a half rooms with 10 boring artifacts. Total rip off

Buy a Frommers travel guide and read up on things before you waste your money.

Bring cell phones, in case you get separated from your group. It's easy to get shuffled in the crowd and lose track of people.

Be sure to visit Downtown Disney, it's free, there is a movie theater, non Disney shops, cigars, coffee, non Disney restaurants and a nice relaxing place to walk around without spending tons of money.

Hope these tips help you if you plan on taking a trip to Mouse land this summer.

We were completely unimpressed with Disney when we took the kids. Universal had some great rides but I have to say our own Wonderland which is mostly rides rides rides is so much better. But your tips are good no matter what theme park you go to.

Minnie Mouse will be present this summer as she will NOT be in jail for supposedly cheating on Mickey.

These allegations starting right before the big Labor Day Weekend opening. The judge dismissed the case on lack of credible eveidence based on a Psycholgical exam that Mickey had stated she was crazy!

Judge Maynard T CrebbsCycle told jurors to disregared the allegations that any crime had been committed becasue of Minnie's psychological problems---- Mickey protested but to no avail and when the jusdge finally yelled at Mickey that he could not get divorced on Adultery charges against Minnie because she was crazy!

Mickey screamed I never said she was crazy!!!! I said she was Fuckin Goofy!!!!

Nite. Tinker Bell and Little House will also be teaming up for a Disney "R" rated Blockbuster for alternative couples at the theme park- It will be Called- "Little Mouse on the Fairy"!

Hammer, have a joyous vacation with the family. Your tips are more helpful than Disney's official site.

John M., Disney is missing a screen writer!!!

The two things I dread most about having kids are 1.) going to crappy kids movies and 2.) going to Disneyland/world.

Jeannie: Disney doesn't update enough. They still run futuristic type computer rides with 1985 technology.

Skinyblonde: Thanks I drove through there it's nice.

snowmanpoop: I don't think I could take it without fastpass.

john: They actually have an adult theme park call Pleasure island. I went once it was like Bourbon street during a gay alcoholics convention. Fucking goofy hehe

Deborah: Thanks, I've been several times and I know the ropes now :)

snay: It's not so bad, kind of like a lobotomy, you don't miss your mind after a while.

These are terrific tips. You almost make me want to visit Disney so I can actively avoid it while I'm there.

Oh, and Malnurtured Snay, you don't really have to do either of those things when you have kids...

Or you could pull a "Jack Handey" and drive the kids to an old burned down warehouse, and say "Oh no- it looks like Disneyworld burned down!" and go home.

I considered that option...

Jen is gonna kill you when she gets back! She's probably sitting at a crappy park restaurant right now with blistered feet, no cash and a pocket full of park hopper tickets! Oh man...

On a more pleasant note- useful post!

I know it's wrong, but I love Disney World. Of course, we went last year with the kids, and for the first time ever I was Disney'd-out. I figure it'll be a good 5-10 years before I'll want to go again. It's the rude crowds that do me in, not the park itself.

Jocelyn: I spend most of my time avoiding Disney :)

stucco: Damn that's what my parents did to me ;)

jp: no worries I sent her the rundown months ago :D I hope she remembered.

infini: will certainly try to minimize my discomfort.

kitem: Luckily Disney doesn't do that yet most parks do, but there are so many people like me on special diets that they can't legally deny people their "special food"

alan: Universal is much better.

mutley: Good idea! I should have thought of that...

savy: I feel the same way but watching the kids enjoy themselves is almost as fun.

My sympathies. Every time I see one of the Disney commercials that invite you to come visit The Happiest Place on Earth, I feel homicidal.

Have a good time and don't forget the sunscreen and hats! I'm looking forward to your return with photos, I hope you get one of Goofy making out with Snow White behind the restrooms.

I'm a little off on my Florida geography, but if you did have some time, you could take the wee ones down to the Cape and see the Shuttle on the launch pad. Kennedy Space Center might be a good diversion for a day. Enough to get "It's a Small World" out of your head.

I think you will havve a great time too, especially when you witness the smiles on the kid's faces.

A comedian once said (I think it was the black comedian DC): We paid $90 a ticket to get into dinneyworld, we gonna ride every MF in this park 10 times.

My parents took us there when I was about 11 years old - it was a trip I will never forget - one of those great childhood memories.

Happy and safe travels, my friend.

Those are good! I went to the California one awhile ago and it is so much cheaper doing it that way. People are crazy for not doing that. We also happend to arrive the day there was a minor earthquake and the tourist were too scared to go to the park so we had it all to ourselves and didn't even have to get off the rides to go around again, just stayed seated and they ketp it going! Have fun...that will be a long week though, kids and Disney ware the adults out!

Cool tips but not for us this year. I will keep them in mind for next year or the year after. I want the girls old enough to ride but to remember going too.

Kennedy Space Center is right there and well worth the time and money, plus the crowds are polite. Highly recommend it. I prefer Disneyland in LA over the Orlando one just because it's smaller and easier to get around but that being said have a great time.

Here's the best advice....don't go at all and tell the kids to suck it up. You'll save lots of money and your kids will learn a valuable life lesson. That being that "life is unfair - so get used to it".

janet: I think they neutered goofy after the france incident ;)

shooter: that is a great idea, they've been to Johnson center but never to Kennedy.

Kirsten: that's right I do it to give them the things I didn't have and to see them happy.

nomas: lol I once rode the woody woodpecker ride 10 times in a row, luckily no splinters in my ass ;)

Jenny: People don't like rain or earthquakes, I did magic kindom during a storm once and it was great.

tweety: Yeah until they can remember it's almost not worth it.

marianne: Disney has the best employees and Universal has the best technology.

annie: thanks practice makes perfect

leann: thanks I'm going to offer up the space center as an alternative to a day in the parks

mike: glad this is useful, have a good time :)

paulf: my kids are all special needs and have been abused and neglected by their previous families. I'm trying to show them that there is more to life than hunger, pain and neglect.

Cool tips!! You should put that in a 'guide' of some sort!

I don't think I'll ever be visiting a theme park again, but if I DO, I'll be taking all that into consideration.

I LOVE the "fast pass" idea!! And I BET they want to pummel you!! hahaha

I'm also leaving for Disney on June 1st. My daughter has been begging to go for years. We are staying at a hotel 2 miles away from the park. We will also see a Shuttle launch on June 8th in the evening. That is what I'm looking forward to. Have fun and let me know what dates you will be there. Maybe the kids can have some fun together.

Hope you have fun!

Judith it goes for just about every place I believe, Disney has lost some of it's magic for me.

kb: all those hot sweaty people standing in line stare daggers at us fast passers ;)

R.A,M I'm leaving the week before unfortunately I'm going to miss the launch. But I might take them out there anyway.

jean: I like epcot ok and universal is kinda fun but if I lived there I would stay far away.

Avoid Paramount's Carowinds (On the NC/SC border), for sure, if you are going to places other than Disney. However, Paramount's King's Dominion, up in VA, is pretty good. A lot cleaner and nicer than Carowinds. Last time I went to Six Flags in ATL, it was trashy and many of the rides were down. I just prefer museums, but kids don't. I really enjoyed Kennedy Space Center, and Bush Gardens was fun, too.

I'm terrified of roller coasters (and I am a pilot and I don't mind aerobatics!), so theme parks usually don't hold much attraction to me.

The biggest racket that the parks have is the food and drink. Just like the movie theaters.

Beware that many theme parks require you to go through metal detectors. So ditch the knives and guns. Besides, a 1911 dropping on somebody's head from a roller coaster would hurt.

anon: thanks for the tips: I don't usually take my gun but if I do it's going to be a tiny 9x18 auto in my front pocket. No chance of it falling out. they search bags and backpacks but haven't frisked me lately.

I don't do too many roller coasters these days, my neck can't take it.

AMEN - well said.

I applied ALL of these tips when we took the kids to Sea World in San Diego back in March.

We had a great time because me and my old man did a little planning and the kids had a blast taking in somehting EDUCATIONAL! (They were having so much fun, they didn't realize they were LEARNING something! Shhhh!!!) :o)

Having lived just south of Cape Canaveral for several years, I can only say that any space shot is awesome but the night shots are just unbelievable! We got pretty much OD'd (Over-Disney'd) when we lived there because everyone who came to see us just HAD to go to Disneyworld. If I never hear "It's a Small World" again in my life, it will be too soon.

As a practical matter, we've got several small long-range walkie-talkie radios that we use even when we go shopping and such. They work great in big places - like amusement parks - with a high dislocation factor. Four of them (which are enough for one each in our family) are generally cheaper than a cell phone and they're easier to use.

A dissenting view.

I love Disneyworld! We go there every summer, and have a great time.

Sure it isn't for everybody... and if you are frail of body and can't take heat, it certainly isn't for you... but we always have a good time.

Cheers,

GF
