Learning to shoot.

I've been around handguns and shooting since I first fired my Uncle's Walther PPK almost 25 years ago. I've learned a lot along the way and have introduced many folks to the safe use of firearms.

Once one gets past the irrational fear of guns that has been pounded into our heads for the last several decades and sees that a firearm is only a tool with no inherent evil soul lurking inside, the learning can begin.

Women are the easiest to teach. They usually have no prejudices or preconceived notions about guns and are more than happy to learn the rules on safe handling. I also find that women make the best first time shooters. I have some theories on why but no real proof.
Men on the other hand often let their testosterone get in the way and will often challenge what I'm teaching by quoting what their uncle said or what they saw on CSI Miami. Many times it's just the fact that some people can't let go of their ego for a few minutes so they can actually learn something.

The most important thing is safety. Here are Gun Guru Jeff Cooper's rules:

RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

It is really hard to teach folks to keep their booger hook off the bang switch. I have cut range sessions short when I see folks on adjacent lanes waving their guns back and forth with their finger on the trigger. It's unnerving, Especially when they are cops and should know better.

The biggest problem new shooters have is fear of recoil. Honestly, recoil is mostly a non issue when it comes to most standard handguns. I have taught 9 year old girls to shoot a .44 magnum
accurately.

With a revolver, a two handed grip works best with the wrist straight and the hand firm but relaxed. Just roll with the recoil and don't try to fight it. Many revolvers will roll upward in your hand instead of giving you a hard kick.

With many Semi-automatics you will find they function on the force of recoil. The trick is to not limp wrist when firing. Your arm will raise with the recoil but the sum effect will be quite mild.

I had a lot of veterans tell me the kick of a .45 automatic was more than they could handle. With the proper grip and stance a .45 is a pussy cat. I believe that poor training in the old days turned a lot of people off of handguns.

Many small pocket pistols work on blowback. That means it harnesses the power of the expanding gun powder to cycle the gun's action and chamber a new round. With a small pistol this can be unpleasant, especially to someone with large hands. Pocket guns are great for emergencies but I wouldn't recommend one for recreational shooting. I've got the scars to attest to that ...

If you want to get into shooting, it's a good idea to join the NRA. They offer many free and low cost safety courses and additional training by certified instructors. There are even women's only classes.

Most states now allow ordinary citizens to carry a handgun for self defense. I think it's a great idea especially for women to be armed, as they are so often the targets for predators.

Funny you mention this! When I was in basic training, the drill sergeants (all of whom were male) said they'd much rather so weapons qualifications with females for the very same reasons! Not only that, but a higher percentage of male basic trainees failed weapons qualifications than did their female counterparts. Who knew??

I hate guns. Sorry Hammer, but my experience with them is a woman I know blowing her head off with her husband's gun and her daughter finding her. It's a bad association.

Of course all the cops I know have carried them and I always felt safe around them, am was glad they knew how to take care of themselves if the need arose.

Like in hunter safety the kids learn T.A.B.

T--Treat every gun as if it were loaded.

A--always point your muzzle in a safe direction

B--Be sure of your target and beyond.

My son remembers these all the time.

I remember we were all out at the range shooting and my sister decided to let my son shoot her .45 without asking me which was the first mistake. But she was all goofy saying, oh he won't want to shoot it more than once cuz the kick.

He put three clips through it and hit the target every time.

I was so proud.

Very good post, indeed. Guns are not toys, should not be treated as one -same principle as should be applied to cars too because either can be a lethal weapon if used incorrectly.
You appealed to my past a lot with this post because you see, I worked for 8 years for the NRA. I may not agree with those who insist on having an oozi or a hundred or machine guns, but I do believe that gun control should begin with each individual knowing what in blazes to do with a gun, safely! Hunting is a great sport and for that matter, so is target shooting, gun clubs, all kinds of great competitions there.

I've always wanted to go target shooting, but I don't know if I want to carry a gun in my purse/car. I'd hate to see what I'd do w/ it in the case of road rage.

Thanks for an informative post. I should have my husband read this!

I wish you lived near here. I've been shooting for 6 years but have gotten rusty and am paying some dude $68 to give me lessons because I want to improve my shot with a handgun. I think I've bragged to you before about my H&K 40USP. I actually wish I had a Ruger 9mm handgun. I have a Ruger 9mm rifle but that's almost TOO easy to shoot well with.

Your number one rule is the MOST IMPORTANT of all. Here is CA very few people understand or appreciate guns.

As I've said before, I have no idea what it's like to live there but here, we don't need guns. Although there are a significant number of black market guns coming across the border for the criminal market so I suppose we too may need to be armed one day. I hope not. Too many crazy drunken people - I doubt we'd be safer with them.

As a woman, who knows how to ID a gun, shoot one and USE it in a pinch, I still swear that Americans should shoot and own all the guns they want. Just make the ammo illegal.

Shooting is 1/2 the battle. Most people that are not trained, can become disarmed and have thier own gun used on them, if they don't shoot the "bad" guy first.

Im just not sure I want all that responsibility...

I wish I would have known you were a collector of guns. I sold my Moms' .44 Rudger redhandled revolver. hmmmmmmm

I was thinking of buying a gun - but a lady in a pub showed me her bazookas and now I can't afford it...

"Most states now allow ordinary citizens to carry a handgun for self defense." It's sad that we've let it come to that point. No, not the handgun-carrying--having to grovel before the almighty government for rights they should have no control over.
Also, to Scarlet--you'd be surprised how the responsibility of carrying can actually make you less aggressive. The knowledge that you have that also helps make you feel like making the responsible choice, at least as far as I've seen.
Superstar, the likelihood of even a completely unpracticed shooter being disarmed has been blown out of proportion for far too long. Often, the presence of the gun is plenty of deterrent, since no one on the wrong end of the barrel really wants to stick around and see whether the armed person will fire. Even if an attacker does attempt to disarm a possible victim, things don't happen so quick and slick as in the movies. Most criminals do not have the speed, skill, and dexterity needed to perform such maneuvers without ending up shot in the process.
Finally, Jeni, it's become cliche to say that hunting isn't in the Second Amendment, but it isn't. It's about having weapons equal or superior to those of the government, so as to prevent an oppressive tyranny. Unfortunately, that's long forgotten.
Sorry about the long comment, Hammer. Good post, by the way.

Recoil is my biggest fear. I figured the .45 my dad has would break my arm. Hubby wants me to try his .38's, I have yet to, they scare the shit out of me. I can fire a .22 without a second thought tho;)

Good saftey tips Egon! Don't cross the streams!

I really had no idea that so much was involved in firing a weapon. I have never fired a weapon in my life. I would be interested to try however...

Great stuff there dude. I've often found that women have more of the touchy feely notions about guns being bad, but also that they take to it much easier than guys do. Steadier. Less corrupted my all the movies they've seen.

i like a nine and when i did my range qualifications back in the day - the rangemaster told my boss afterward, "she doesn't want to kill anybody - she just wants to make them wish they were dead!"

my pattern you ask?

triangular to the groin!

i did qualify and did better than most of the men in the program.

i'm great with a 22 rifle if i can get something on a run...

Many many moons ago as a deputy sheriff, I assisted at our "Ladies Hand Gun Classes". I can't tell you how many gals enrolled, because hubby would go off deer hunting and leave his handgun for protection...WITHOUT ANY INSTRUCTIONS ON LOADING OR FIRING!

Some of those scars wouldn't be on the top of the web between the thumb and first finger of your shooting hand would they? About where the slide from a small semi-auto will rip into your hand if your grip is a little too high because your hand is a little too big?

Another important rule: What goes up, must come down. Don't shoot up into the air.

I'd like to get a shotgun for home defense, but the wife isn't too happy about the idea. Right now I have an SKS and I told her if I ever shot at anyone in the house the bullet would probably take out a few neighbors as well. The house isn't that solid.

I'm sure it was just an oversight, but you didn't say anything about how you teach people to shoot automatics sideways like the rappers and ganstas on the TV. That's REAL shootin'.
