More thinking.

I was cleaning up my blog links and was surprised on how many blogs were deleted or hadn't been updated in months. I lost track of some blogs and re-added them to my read list.

Some blogs are now invite only and I wasn't on the guest list... Hehe. Oh well.

I'm off to a blogmeet on Friday. It should be a good time. I can finally meet up with some folks I've been reading for a couple years and get to see them in person. I sometimes get nervous around new people and stick my foot in my mouth but hopefully I can overcome that.

I was thinking of the whole liberal vs conservative thing after reading some of the comments from yesterday. It seems that few can really put themselves into a particular category. On the outside someone might look and act one way but when you delve deeper there are many things that just don't fit the mold.

Personally I have a few core issues:

I support 2nd Amendment rights absolutely.

I support 1st Amendment rights (With NO exceptions for supposed hate speech or non politically correct material) Once you start criminalizing unpopular speech, where does it end and who gets to decide where to draw the line?

I want small government and less handouts to the shiftless. People are not entitled to free health care. People are not entitled to free housing, free food, or a free ride on the backs of hardworking tax payers. Charities can help folks in an emergency then it's up to them pull themselves up and provide for their own family.

I think the government has no business butting into people's lives regarding marriage, sex or living arrangements. Morality is a personal issue that cannot be legislated.

On the flip side, the government has no right to force me to accept alternative lifestyles and shove their version of God down my throat. Teaching "tolerance" in public schools...Bullshit! That's the parent's job. Schools are for math and reading not political indoctrination.

Oh well, I'll climb off my soapbox now.

Here is some free speech for you. NOT WORK or KID SAFE

Well said, I agree. I don't know exactly when it happened, but it seems that people have just handed themselves over, in hopes that "someone else" will take care of things.

Personally I'd rather think for myself.

Yep, the conservative religious right wing cals me a godless commie because I will not accept their Holy Book as a valid premise..I tell them it is circular logic and they get pissed.

But then the left wing socialists figure I am a bigoted racist and a right wing capitalist just because I will not accept their premise that everything would be right on earth if the governments insure that those who need it get it and those who produce do so according to their ability..they have never been able to explain just who will determine the needs and production ability other than say it will be determined by society..which means that society will pass laws to extort the excess production from the producers as long as the producers will stand for it.

I figure a lot like you..I don't need a government telling me what is and what is not 'moral'..as I see it there is just one true immoral action on earth..and that is coveting what someone else has and trying to get it without earning it.

Damn...sorry about the rant..need to do another post on this myself I reckon..

Oh that vid is a f'ing riot!! LOL
Have fun at your blogmeet. You must be quite interesting to know in 'real' life.
Regarding your issues:
I absolutely agree with you on the first two.
The third one let me come back to.
The fourth, also in agreement.
The fifth, I agree with government and politics being left out of schools, and that no one should be told what to accept either regarding alternative lifestyles or religion, but I do find that many parents do NOT teach their children 'tolerance' and that to me is a problem. It just continues to breed hatred.
Now back to that third issue.....
hmmm....
OH I'll need half a bottle of wine and a whole blog post to deal with that one.

I defend your right to say anything I disagree with including religion as long as that religion isn't Islam.

I am pretty politically conservative and I agree with a lot of what you outline. You explained things pretty well.

Though, I think you lose your second amendment right when you commit certain crimes or have certain mental/emotional problems.

And I think that tolerance is an important life lesson to learn. Too many people are not taught it at home and I have no problem with schools teaching such life lessons. In my opinion, school is certainly a place where kids learn more than math and reading and such. Though please note that I don't have kids, so my opinion might be tainted by that

Karen, if everyone carries that whole criminal with a gun problem kind of solves itself.

Tolerance? RAH once wrote that an armed society is a polite society. A bit extreme, perhaps, but true nonetheless. Methinks we have become a bit too tolerant, when every kid coming out of school thinks he or she is special and should be treated with kid gloves.

Crystalchick, if I give my own money away it's charity. If the government comes and takes it from me to give it to someone else, it's theft. No matter how you try to justify it, taking money from Peter to give to Paul is theft, pure and simple.

Damn Hammer, I'm sure given enough time you and I could find something to argue about, but those five ain't it.

Have fun at the blogmeet.

I'm right up on that soap box with you hammer!!! Although I do believe that if we don't have free health care for everyone we should at least have affordable health care and medications. And gas for that matter, all three of those are killing the common worker.

I just tend to forget that my link list is there, really. So now that you've reminded me, I feel a bit guilty for not having cleaned it up for ages. Guilt, guilt, guilt. The question is: do I feel guilty enough to clean it up?

Probably not.... hehehe
