Diet...AKA lifestyle change

Quite a few of you nice folks have asked about this pound a day diet I'm on. I have to say it's not for everybody but it works for my metabolism. It's sort of like Atkins but is tuned to my being a vegetarian.

Basically, I eat low starch vegetables, eggs, cheese, soy meat substitutes, nuts, peanut butter, salads etc..

It sounds boring but I figure I'm creative enough to work with these ingredients to make them taste good.

The key to this diet is the low carbohydrates. Starches turn directly into fat in my body and I'm able to handle protein and vegetables much better.

Here is a typical menu:

Breakfast:
3 egg omelet made with broccoli and cheese and 2 soy sausage patties.

Lunch: 1 cup cottage cheese, 2 sliced zucchini sauteed in olive oil and garlic. Greek salad with olives and feta.

snack: 1 cup mixed nuts or 2 celery stalks filled with cream cheese or peanut butter.

Dinner: Vegetable medley, soy burger or a large garden salad topped with hard boiled eggs and shredded cheese.

I'm drinking lots of water and green tea as well because burning off fat requires frequent flushing.

So far it's going well. I've lost about 15 pounds and just need to keep up the momentum. I'm feeling good physically and my mood is much improved.

Like I said, this isn't for everybody. People react differently to certain foods so your mileage may vary.

Now to work some exercise into this plan somehow...

I'm more or less a vegetarian by accident rather than design, although I can't resist fish.

Your post makes me realise how much my diet has changed over the last year. Your list is what I have eaten all my life, until the non functioning teeth occurred. All I can say is that if that's your diet it should work because I weigh the same now as I did 25 years ago - a diet for life.
Cheers

You're setting a great example to us all. It all looks great, though!

I guess the secret is to be disciplined about it all, yeah?

You could try walking for about six hours a day. I eat whatever I want, and it just burns off.

Probably not a strategy for everyone, though.

The problem with such a diet is the fact that you need to shop for and prepare a lot of fresh veggies. Frozen foods are generally only good as side dishes. I also have a problem with soy fake products. I think it's the fake part - trying too hard to be meat when they aren't. I'd rather just have a mound of beans - doctored up with seasonings or sauce. I also like to have a bit of meat. But this is certainly a much healthier diet than most normal people's. I would love to do this but unfortunately, I just don't have the time to do the veggies. My loss.

How can you possibly need more exercise with a wife, 3 children under the age of 10, and Marvin and the gang???

Realistic goals for the short term are the best: housework, leaving the car at home whenever possible or parking far away from your destination, and walkin-walking-walking!

What`s also a big help is writing down everything you both eat and drink in a day, including water, so that you will see in black and white where you need to make the adjustments that will fit your body`s needs.

Lastly, NEVER call it a diet! It`s your life, and these are the changes for you to improve your life! Positive thinking, my friend!!!

Don`t give up, because we`re all here to support you, Hammer!

sounds good, next to a big huge grilled steak. Or some ribs. :)

For me to lose weight, I need to cut the toast. I love me some toast with butter and jam.

Soy sausage and soy burger. It would be easier just to eat the meat.

Sorry if that seemed rude, but I guess I'm in my speaking up mood.

So what's the plan once you're at your desired weight? Are you going to keep it up, or do some kind of compromise with your regular diet. Don't want to gain it all back again....

Good Lord, but if you add in exercise, it'll be 2 lbs a day!

I'm so impressed with you.

Thanks for linking to my Monsters & Apparitions blog, I sadly don't make enough time to add to it, as I once did... It is a spin off of my original The Love Blog which went through a re-adjustment in April 2006... Now that people are linking to M&A more though, it inspires me to add more to it.

Your diet sounds yummy... I could eat nuts, yogurt, and raw veggies all day. Our city has been on strike for 13 weeks and I can't use my local community gym... I need to watch my food intake without the extra exercise to burn it off. But we've been walking more. It is amazing how much good health results in good mental health. I have always been one to take care of my body. Exercise is a must, even if all I can get in is just leg/arm movements while sitting all day in front of a computer, hahaha. My boss thinks I am restless, always moving, but every little bit helps.

Cheers

Low starch veggies? Do you mean like no potatoes or corn? What other veggies are considered starchy? I'm trying to avoid all processed starches...I'm a work in progress.

Great weight loss going Hammer!

Maddy: thanks for the encouragment. I plan to keep this up as best I can.

jenny: It's hard to stick with something if it doesn't taste good :)

meleah: Cheese is my main vice :)

david: that's the key.

alan: when I was always out on service calls and such I could eat like a pig. As I get older and more sedentary I have to eat rabbit food :)

jeannie: I've got it down to a science where I can cook a fresh vegetable in less time than it takes to microwave a TV dinner. Salads almost as quick. I can also make a large undressed salad and keep it in a bag in the fridge and eat on it for a few days.

M: thanks, it's a start :)

Deborah: as the kids get more well behaved I've been taking them for walks and such. But you're right doing day to day stuff makes a big difference.

snowmanpoop: It gets a little old but I'm looking towards the results moslty

stepping. Believe it or not I miss toast the most :)

Yoga: I'm allowing a glass of red wine here and there as my only carb allowance.

lamb: I've been a vegetarian all my life and the soy products were introduced to me at an early age. I didn't realize it then but with all the high colesterol and heart problems in my family I figure it's best for me to stick with the fake stuff.

canadian: thanksgiving is going to be tough.

cheesy: that would do it for sure!

kat: they've been good and I've been getting less exercise as a result :)

diesel: that's always been my problem. I'll have to come to a suitable compromise at some point.

Jocelyn: thanks, I'll have to put an exercise bike in front of the computer ;)

B: You're right about the restless arm and leg movements. I read and article that says that really helps in the long run. Walking is a big plus for me as well.

Janice: correct, no potatoes, corn, peas carrots etc.. I can have eggplant, brocoli, zucchini, greens asparagus, green beans, etc...

Odat: Thanks, It does seem to work pretty good for some folks.

This is an interesting diet. I don't know if I can go on it however. I was born to eat meat! There has got to be some kind of dead animal carcas in there somewhere.

It does look delicious though...

Vegetarian Atkin Diet must be the best in the world.
I follow Weight Watchers programm it's very good and healthy too, but not very fast to loose weight, unless you follow it properly with no mistakes and they happen all the time.

My diabetes lady told me that complex carbs are ok, because our stomach cant break them down. Once you cook them though, they get absorbed into our system and turn to sugar. if we had the stomach of a cow, we'd be able to break them down, but our digestive system just can't, so that salad is good. Good luck with it.

Oh. And I have always wondered why I cannot put on weight efficiently. (Starchy food makes me drowzy, so I live mainly on vegetables, fruit, cheese and eggs.)
