Hammer post for GuyK's caption contest.

I've owned many hammers over the years and have used more types than I care to remember.
My first was a wooden mallet that pounded those different shaped blocks through holes in a toy workbench. From that point on I was hooked.
As a kid I used to build forts with my trusty claw hammer. I had many a busted and sore thumb because my aim was so crappy.
I took wood shop in middle school and high school and perfected the art of the hammer. People lumped me in with the losers and delinquents that took shop class but all I really wanted to do was build things.
I remember one kid was choking up on the handle and hammering like a sissy because he was afraid of hitting his thumb. My teacher cut off the handle with the band saw and gave it back. He said "looks like that's all the handle you need anyway" He was one of my favorite teachers.
When working at my dad's automotive shop I learned to use body hammers. They had odd shaped heads for reshaping sheet metal or for removing dents.
When the handle broke he welded a piston from a shock absorber in it's place. It gave the hammer a good heft and made it look menacing. This one became my favorite and I carried it on my belt loop for many years as a tool and a defensive weapon.
These days I've got a tool box full, brass hammers for working on guns, tack hammers, rubber mallets, pneumatic hammers and so on.
I find myself losing them every time I turn around and I've resorted to using a rock to hang a picture. Pathetic right?
Even though I like hammers in general this blog is named after the philosophical saying:
When your only tool is a hammer every problem looks like a nail.

Very good. I ave used just about every type of hammer made at one time or another from a tack hammer to jack hammer and a hammer drill to a 16# sledge hammer. I have a dozen at least in my shop and carry a couple of more in my Ram tool box..one never knows when one will need a hammer..just in case it don't fit..
So, if chicks like getting nailed, then that makes your tool a hammer too? Or is it a nail gun?
O wow is this really a blog about hammers? Maybe I should start one on paperclips...
ANYWAY: in response to your comment on Dans blog something 2do with thinking being overrated and you're going cold turkey: I tried to stop thinking once in a professional kind of way. It's called Yoga/meditation.
Trust me, it's really boring and you'll be screaming out for the freedom to indulge yet again in trivial thought ...
Great Post,
You nailed it as usual! Keep up the work on the vids---great job.
J
My hammer collection is lacking being I was one of those misfit delinquets who immersed himself in the "industrial arts" classes in high school. My dad's vast collection of not just hammers but tools in general is something I am rather envious of.
The mystery is solved, our lives are based on impact. Could be what you say, or how hard Det. Callahan's S&W hits you.
guyk: Glad you liked the post.It is indeed a versatile instrument :)
PaulF: Whatever the right tool for the job happens to be :)
gledwood: Nah GuyK just requested a post on hammers. Yoga was my P.E class for three years and I hated it. Farting in those uncomfortable poses was embarassing as hell.
John McElveen: thanks, glad you like them :)
sornie I don't use my toolbox as much I used to but it sure is nice having them when something breaks.
barfingate: I've got a 629 with it's own hammer. It tends to drive the nail a little to far ;)
I like hammers. I had to learn as a kid. I helped build our deck and the contractor was impressed with my lack of moose tracks. I bought a rubber mallet just because. I like the eensy weensy pretend hammers to keep in my junk drawer to hammer picture nails.
I have many hammers that I still use all the time. Yes, I also have an air hammer and the compressor to run it with. I'm a one man construction company here I guess.
I don't have a modern nail gun though and they are wonderful for driving lots of nails.
Hammers are cool, but for serious work I like a hatchet. Now if you will excuse me, I have to get back to making my bomb. :-)
Oh baby air hammers make me hot! Especially ones with attachments! lol
I have used a shoe on many occasions to hammer something!
Lol...my hammers disappear too! What is up with that?
I like the quote that inspired the moniker for your blog...makes sense to me! :)
i also have the problem of losing hammers.
I made a brass hammer for myself when I worked in a fabrication shop that doubled as a pot pipe when it wasn't beating on stuff. One side of the head screwed off and the handle was bored out. That was way back when I smoked dope. Still have the hammer.
Somewhere.
If I have to have something hammered I just tell my husband ;)
That air chisel at the top of the post brought back some memories; I haven't used one of those in 15 years.
Nice collection.
My experience with hammers usually all bring the same painful memories to my fingers, I wonder why...?
jeannie: that is cool, I'm still bad about moose tracks lol.
bbc: I don't care much for nail guns. I make a bigger mess than I started with.
cheesy: lol I've never seen those attachments!
Skinnylittleblonde: thanks :) I have no idea I think the hammer and screwdrivers get "borrowed"
infini: It's an epidemic.
JP: you just brought back fond memories from metal shop. One guy had made a foot peg for his bike into a pipe. He went to go braize something onto it and ended up filling the whole shop with resin smoke. I think even the teacher got high.
snowmanpoop: lol do I sense a double entendre there ;)
bobg: I used to love using that thing to cut sheet metal.
la cremiere: me too my hands show a souvenier from about every prject I've done.
I love hammers and love getting a chance to use them. My dad had a whole bunch of different hammers, my favorite is the sledgehammer but I can't remember ever using it.
Good choice, Guy-I'd been wondering why this blog was called that.
Have several hammers, handed down from fathers and uncles. Hammers are a lot of fun. Dad had a cool one once with a screw driver hidden in the handle. Always loved playin' with that one.
I didn't know about your title. Awesome!
When your only tool is a hammer every problem looks like a nail.

Hmmm, I live this theory with the Mr.everyday...
Hello Hammer, I've visited but never commented before.
We have a Hammer that we don't know the use of. Maybe I could post a picture and you could try to identify it for us.
janet: a sledge is fun and good exercise. I feel like john henry when I use one.
FHB: that's pretty cool, like a surviuval hammer :)
carrie: A ot of people missed that from early in my blog
sweeti: thanks so much for visiting
I'll return the favor :)
I have owned a few hammers myself - usually 2nd hand ones - and I've used other things when no hammer is available. I'm not that good at using them sometimes - don't take a big enough swing - a bit pathetic really!! But I like using them.......
