On the first part of my drive to Missouri I set the cruise control at 60mph and just tried to get the best gas mileage possible. I was getting 26mpg in a Ford Expedition with a V8 and regular 87 octane unleaded.
As soon as I got into Kansas I was forced to buy fuel that was 10 to 20% ethanol. My fuel economy dropped to 19mpg. How in the fuck is this good for the environment? They use 1 gallon of fossil fuel to grow, and process 3/4 gallon of ethanol which gives me 25% less fuel economy.
I think we are getting screwed.
I made roasted corn on the cob for the father's day barbecue. Today it feels like I'm shitting broken glass. Maybe I need to chew better.
When I was in Missouri we weathered a couple of tornadoes. They do indeed sound like a freight train. Imagine constant rolling thunder and lightning for 3 hours straight. I couldn't tell one thunderclap from the next. It sounded like one constant roar. The kids were scared shitless so I took them down to the basement and let them sleep on the couch.
My uncle is in charge of maintenance of a large private country club and golf course. He broke his hand just before I got there so we didn't get to play. The good thing was his best friend at the club is also the master chef, so he came over to the house and he showed us how to make gourmet baked potato soup. While soup simmered, we played golf on the Wii and drank beer. The soup kicked ass. I'll post the recipe later this week.

I love golf on the Wii! Awesome!
Glad you survived the tornadoes! Wonder how much carbon footprint you would leave behind if you were to try to outrun a tornado with the V8 Ford Expedition? I'm being sarcastic obviously! Only Senator Nancy "lights out" Pelosi could answer that question!

"it feels like I'm shitting broken glass"
doesn't Annie Lennox sing that?
smile.
Gas mileage? The idea is for you to visit the pump more often and not less...I thought you would be used to that by now.
Can't wait to see the recipe.
LMAO at Katherine!
So, is Wii golf better than no golf at all?
I think you might be on to something here. It would appear that ethanol is not actually a fuel your car (meaning probably all cars) can use. Therefore, they are essentially watering the gas and the mileage would be too noticeable if they watered more than that. While they net a tidy profit.
I suck at Wii golf. So I don't think I'll waste my money trying the real thing.
I agree about the 'green' gas. My Lincoln was getting 19/25, but now I get 17/24. The city driving is the result of driving 35mph near home, but highway mph is not as good.
But then, in this year of our Lord, 2009, what is?
LOL @ Kat!
I still wonder why we have roads through Kansas...
[sorry to the folks from Kansas but] what a waste of land! lol
I always feel blessed to get home any time I have to drive there. Someone looked out for my soul when they placed my heart in Oregon!
Everyone I've talked to feels their mileage has suffered with the ethanol spiked fuel, some people with older model vehicles, say they've had fuel pump failures, etc., from using this fuel. Also this ultra low sulpher diesel, costs milage and performance in our older diesel trucks we're running, plus you'll pay more, cause of the increased refining costs.Sounds like the folks who have to drive much to make a living, will pay through the ass,as usual.
Soup sounds good. I'll be waiting to see the recipe.
Oh, I do want that recipe! Sounds heavenly!
katherine: LOL! I'll never listen to that song the same way again. Welcome back Hammer!
I love potato soup and will look forward to the recipe.
Can't wait to see the recipe.
To bad you can't use a foot wedge on the Wii. Ha. I love using both of my foot wedges. Fuck those tornados, scare the hell out of me.
tornadoes suck. We have them a lot.
Thanks for the visual. I will never look at corn the same again.
Sounds like you'd get better gas milage by shitting in the tank.
The last part of this post sounds awesome! I want to try that soup!
PS - You cracked me up with that corn on the cob comment! :)
Lessons from a gourmet chef, wii golf and beer. Does it get any better than that?
You have to see if your vehicle can use e85.
http://www.e85fuel.com/information/vin.php
for you, the 8th digit in the VIN has to be a "5".
I made roasted corn on the cob for the father's day barbecue. Today it feels like I'm shitting broken glass. Maybe I need to chew better.
When it comes to corn, when you get done eating all the kernels, stop. Throw away the cob. S**ting cobs is what causes the broken glass feeling. Seriously, Metamucil is a good friend. Been one for me, can be one for you.
Weighing on the ethanol thing: all the above comments referring to ethanol being bad for your car and its mileage are correct. In fact, if you really want to see how bad this stuff is, try running it in your outboard motor. It's death incarnate. It took me a long GD time to figure out that the problems I was having with my motor were related to ethanol in the gasoline.
Fuel stabilizer fixed the issue (in fact I use it in my car now too) but how does this benefit anyone other than the corn farmers?
You buy more fuel that gives you less power and requires a third-party additive to work worth a damned. Pissed me off.
I am Tiger on Wii. The wife loves it!
Hammer,
My Great Grand-Father and Grand-Father ran moon in the hills of divided state back East during the first (and only legitimate) prohibition. My Father went on a few runs but mostly helped with the cars and engine work, and when I was a boy and he told me of such, he said that sometimes the “moon” was run as fuel or mixed with the gas which provided more power. I asked him then why we do not use it now and he said: "It burns up the engines boy." I have never forgotten this.
I'd like to know how Indy cars perform so well on alcohol (they switched over I think in the 70's), but passenger cars don't. Maybe because it's not a mixture, maybe because the engine is designed for the fuel from the first pen to paper drawing. I'd like to know how that running diesel on cooking oil is really working out, not just in rah rah articles by proponents. I hope it's going well.
I'm not against trying 50 ways to run our lives on different fuels to find the handful that work well. I'm against my tax payments propping up lousy ways without finding a way to better it. Maybe there's a tweak that would make e85 the cat's meow. Maybe Cactus Mark found it.
Was a witness to the tornado that flattened Jerrel in '97. Waited it out under a highway overpass on 35 (which was REALLY fuckin' stupid to do, but there you go). Amazing shit to watch. Thought it was really cool till insulation and shit started falling out of the sky and I woke up to the reality of it. Very sad.
