The Trip

As I mentioned earlier, I drove up to see the family last week. I got a late start on the way there so I stopped in Ardmore OK as the halfway point. I'm glad I did because as soon as I checked into the motel a massive storm blew in. We got up at 3:30am and arrived at Grandma's house around noon.

For those of you who don't know, driving through Kansas is boring and shitty.

Grandma looked like hell, She told me she just got out of the hospital where they put a stint in an artery and the plug where they went in came loose and she almost bled to death. "Didn't anyone tell you? " Nobody ever tells me shit.

We visited for a while but now that my aunt and her 24 year old son live there we have to go stay at my Uncle's new house that's about 20 miles away.

It was a nice place but I wish I could have been closer to Grandma's since she wasn't feeling well.

My Uncle is only about 10 years older than myself so we have a lot in common. He's a pretty cool guy and always took me horseback riding, fishing and camping when I was a kid.

His computer was all fucked up so I decided to fix it for him while he was at work. When I was cleaning up shit I found my 24 year old cousin's myspace page. There were dudes on it with hearts and tears (missing you!) I was like ..oh shit.

Later that evening my Uncle was bitching about his nephew living with Grandma, not pulling his weight and inviting all kinds of homeless people over to sleep in the basement family room with him and sometimes they make their way upstairs to steal Grandma's shit.

That's when Uncle verified that my cousin was indeed a homo. Always before he was a pain in the ass spoiled sociopath now he smokes pole in Grandma's basement. Lovely.

So I wasn't supposed to say anything but the situation is causing a family rift. Not because of the gayness but for the mooching, stealing and lack of respect.

They've always spoiled the kid and given him everything he's ever wanted and never once asked him to lift a finger and probably never will so it's no surprise he's doing what he's doing.

They are total enablers. Nice people but there was never a male figure around to put a stop to bullshit.

So I kept my opinions to myself and tried to enjoy my visit as much as I could while trying to get the ugly thoughts out of my head.

Uncle and I ended up staying up drinking, joking and watching movies. The kids rode bikes and played with the toys left there by his step grand kids.

Overall everything went smooth but a week was enough and I missed home. So I got up at 3:00am and hauled ass back to Texas. Goddamn that is an awful fucking drive and the older I get the worse it gets.

I missed you! Glad you are back. No one tells me anything in family either. Smokes pole? Can I steal that one from you?

Woohoo, you are back! It was getting a little quiet around here without your usual ranting and raving. (yeah, we all really missed your blog :-))

You did the right thing to keep your mouth shut - enablers hear nothing except the drumbeat of their own rationalizations and denial.

All the stuff you wish you didn't know...

Welcome back to the world where you can just not go where you don't want to.

Welcome back :D Hope you got some much needed sleep after the long drive back. Even if you enjoy a vacation, it is always great to be home.

Yeah, families are complicated. You can let it get to you and drive a wedge between you and the rest of them, or try to ignore some things as best you can in the interest of peace. Sounds like you had to do some major tongue biting.

Sounds like the best part of your trip was seeing your Grandma again and I hope she is feeling better now.

I'm glad you were able to put some ugly thoughts out of your head about your cousin and have a good time with your uncle. He sounds like a pretty cool guy.

Btw, Happy Father's Day!!

Long drive, although these days I'd rather a thousand times sit in a car for 13 hours than submit the family to the TSA security kabuki.

Welcome back.

That's some drama you got there Hammer. My family (what's left of it) is pretty damn boring by comparison.

Honestly I don't know whether to be glad or dissappointed though. Some excitement might make going to family events worthwhile and give me something to blog about besides Obama's latest fuck up.

Welcome back.

I remember driving through part of Kansas about 18 years ago...VERY boring. It was also as if the highway instantly went to shit as we crossed into the state.

Your Grandma sounds like my MIL. MIL only makes $300/month, yet she is expected to constantly bail out her grandkids, who are all in their 30s. :(

Kansas, N Dakota, Manitoba...they're all the same. It SUCKS driving across the plains!

Are you ready for the meet next month? You do know you're going to be the cabana boy since you are so good at fixing and mixing drinks!
Glad you're home and have a great Father's Day!

He's probably doing meth down there too, which is even more disrespectful. Queers and meth go hand in hand. I used to live a stone's throw from Laguna Beach....I know.

Driving from WI to CA last Feb., I can say I hated the entire state of Illinois, though the people are really cool, and I hated the drive between OK City and Amarillo. Blaaaah! Although I did regain a new appreciation for the AZ desert because the CA desert is ugly in comparison. My favorite part was going down I-17 from Flagstaff to Phoenix.

Always good to get back home. We haven't taken a trip to GA in some time now because the drive just wears on us and we really don't have the extra day each way to do a motel.
Welcome back.

I am glad you are back.

I am sorry about the family issues. I guess they are in every family as I have quite a few of my own that I am dealing with.

I have done similar drives...and I am with you on this...boring and shitty.

Poor Grandma. Health problems and a shiftless grandson who lets strangers in her house who steal from her.

Glad you're back safe and sound!

He has two kids now, but I'm positive he missed his calling.

Hammer, just keep repeating this word in your head for a month. Blownstar. That should help drown out the images of fannybandits pirating your Grandmothers shit. What nerve.
