This week in hammerland

.........................................................................................................................................
Thanks for all those new slang terms you guys left in the comments. I'm going to work them into my repertoire "Slicker than two slugs fucking in a saucer of snot..." I'll tell you what! LOL
Well the wife got transferred after all but it's not all bad. Instead of being sent back to her old job, the boss stood up for her for once and demanded she be moved to the next career building post instead. So now she's in charge of a hundred teamsters ...oh boy! The only thing that sucks about it is that she has a 45 min drive each way to work.
Wife insisted that she needed a smaller more fuel efficient car for her new commute. I was thinking used Ford Focus she was thinking new Cooper Mini. Right now she drives a Dodge Charger SRT8 with 14,000 miles on it and I just paid it off so I'm not inclined to go into debt for another car.
.
Usually when she gets the new car bug we just go get one but this time I had to hold my ground and be fiscally responsible. I looked into the gas savings of buying a small car, the payment, insurance etc versus what she has now and there is no way it would pay for itself in under 12 years if ever, plus we have no place to keep it.
I reminded her that once her Charger gets on the highway with the cruise control activated the engine shuts down to four cylinders to save gas. I think she just wanted the mini. Maybe once this recession is over.
We've made enough financial blunders in the last 18 years and I'd like to think I've learned something in that time and can hopefully avoid throwing anymore money away.

I wouldn't want to fight with the big guys on the highway in a mini - cute in town but..
We've made some huge expensive blunders the past 10 years. We'll be paying for a while.
I'm partial to the mini myself as I have very fond memories of them before they became all souped up and sexy.
[I could have sworn you wrote that she was in charger of more than a 100 'hamsters.'!]
Cheers
Good logic, especially if the charger is debt free. I thought about replacing one of our 4WD F350 flatbeds, with a compact 4WD,back when diesel was so damn high, but when you set down with a pencil and a bluehorse note pad, that dog don't hunt. First off,the work requirements prohibit good mileage for anything we use,big or little, plus I give up load cap. and versatility, and I got a crew of big ol boys who don't fit well in mini trucks. And your right, most V8s get respectable highway milage,I had a 96 SS impala that avg. 22+ out on the open rd.
That's a good call Hammer! The only thing I would recommend you look at before you close the books on it, are the hybrids. If you are looking at a long term investment, Hybrids may be worth it....
It does feel good just putting in $18 into my Civic Hybrid every 3 weeks. Even at $2 per gallon.
what Diller said...except I was just thinking of buying a little rice burner pickup in addition to my Red ram back when pushaline was over four bucks a gallon...but the numbers didn't add up...I could buy the high priced gas for my Ram cheaper than I could pay the additional cost of maintaining another vehicle...especially in Florida where auto insurance is near the extortion rate....too many retired yankees I reckon
Hammer- Just imagine, if worst came to worst and you had to drive the Cooper? You, Sir? The BONE-CRUSHING Hammer...driving a mini Cooper?! Cooper or ass beating? I say, take the ass beating...and proudly!!!
I just bought a mini on Friday......it should be illegal to drive a car that FUN and the fuel milage don't hurt either :-P
but its soooo cool hammer
I'll take a mini if you want to buy me one....
Life is short. Let her have the Mini.
i love my charger...
I am laughing at your wife wanting a mini cooper.
My kids want me to buy one so I can have a back seat for when and if I ever get blessed with grandkids.
I don't see why I need a back seat for imaginary grand kids. Plus if that keeps my oldest from producing a baby into his marriage. I will never have a back seat. I am not a big fan of my drama queen daughter in law.
I am not even going to test drive one. I like my miata.
She doesn't want to drive her Dodge Charger SRT8?? That's my DREAM car!
I'd stick with the CHARGER!
Give up the Charger? No, no, no. It was just one of those -- you know, "having a moment" things.
I hope she feels better soon and realizes that she doesn't really want to give up the Charger.
Kath
one of my girl friends just got a mini...she loves it. About the time the 2010's come out you'll be able to get a really good deal.
I'm only in charge of one Teamster...smile.
