Random goings on
I've really been cutting back on dining out. It's a huge waste of money and there really isn't much good around here. Basically, it's just dragging myself and the kids to some mediocre joint with mediocre food and shelling out $60 each time. It is starting to make me grumpy. I can take $60 and make steaks, potatoes, fresh vegetables, hot bread and even wine. There are plenty of leftovers and ingedients for future meals as well.
So, I've been cooking at home a lot. It's much less stressful and the kids like learning to cook.
With grocery prices up more than 30%, I decided no more junk food, no more name brand chips and crackers, no more $8 for a six pack of regular beer. I'm buying basic foodstuffs and making food from scratch. To tell you the truth, it's really not that much harder than opening a box and boiling water.
Luckily, before I quit to take care of the kids, we reduced our debt to house and cars only. We can get along fine on one income but there is no good reason to toss money away in this kind of economic climate.
I'm trying to teach my kids about politics. They see and hear all this shit going on and are pretty confused by it. I tell them it's easy.
Democrats want to take away your money and the right to choose how to run your own life. They want to rob from the producers and give it to the non-producers. They want us to give up the standard of living that we have worked so hard to attain because of some nonsense about global warming. They also want to criminalize speech they disagree with.
Republicans are almost the same but they want to do it more slowly.
I'll tell you what, I can't wait for all these military personnel to come home from Iraq and get into politics. They know what they've been fighting for and against for 5 years and should have some pretty good ideas on how to fix the shitty mess we've gotten ourselves into.

That's got to be one of the most accurate political analogies I've ever read!
When our kids were little, we had no money so we never ate out (except my husband grabbing fast food at lunch and we wonder why he has clogged arteries). I made everything homemade. Junk/processed food was for when Dad had to cook because Mom was sick. The kids didn't think much of it most of the time.
Homemade food is so much healthier and cheaper. And tastier. I am usually disappointed when I eat out these days even at "good" restaurants.
military personnel in politics...that might work!
AHHHHH Wise one! I hate spending money on take out and fast food.
~claps hands~
Im so glad to hear about family time....cooking w/ your kids and teaching them the basics of economics warms my school teaching heart!
I sent a care package to a soldier I don't know...It made his day/week/month!
It made me feel guilty, cuz I felt like I got more out of it! Then again, for $4o to ship it...I think the US Post is the onlyone getting anything out of it!
I wish I could meet a guy like you
"Teaching children politics"
Don't they learn all about that in Your schools over there?
Dana: I call em as I see em :)
Jeannie: restaurants for the most part suck unless they are 4 star or higher.
Katherine: It just might!
Superstar: thank you for supporting our soliders. It's really good to hear.
Barbara: I'm blushing. ;D
anna-lys: our schools don't teach anything of value besides reading and math and that is a little dodgy.
Great observation, Hammer!
Home cooked is the best way to go, I prefer eating my own cooking than that of most restaurants, myself.
Whenever my cousin goes off on my being a 'damn yankee democrat' he says the same things ONLY doesn't include the part about Repubs doing it slower. I swear he channels the voice of Reagan in his sleep. He really thinks his party is the only one that can make us all better. I'm still waiting....any day now would be fine.
I don't really find myself to fit into that description. I do vote democrat but I really must be a libertarian. LOL
We haven't cut it totally out, but eating at restaurants was one thing we did too much and are staying home much more now. It can be alot healthier and certainly less money.
The picture of the teacher in the post below is a riot. I haven't had problems to your degree but it's very difficult to go up against the school and certain teachers. And some of them, you wonder why they ever went into the education field. Good luck, I'm sure with you and the Doc on the case things will improve soon.
Since my oldest in still at college and youngest goes with her fiance everynight, hubby and I do the take out thing alot. We are tired of it, I'll be thankful when the kids are both home so I HAVE to cook. Making goodies and dinner at home is safer, cheaper and yummier:)
Sorry about that last comment (I don't know where the word "almost" came from!).
What I meant to say was: I'm with you on the last paragraph. :)
Great idea eating at home. you are right about the prices going sky high.. kids have so many questions.
The slow slide into socialism that started with the unions way back in the late 1800s is gathering speed and now there is just no way of slowing it down. Oh, we can elect McCain who will slow it temporarily just as Reagan did but the greed of the public who demand a free lunch will just keep us on the slide.
I figure the best we can do is try to protect ourselves and teach our children to do the same..and when someone tells us we are selfish thank them for the compliment.
Loved the political lesson...I'll have to use that with my kids. LOL
We've cut down to eating out once a week. Homemade is definitely much better tasting, cheaper & it's better for you.
I admire the fact that you've left work to take care of the kids...every man should try it at least once in their lives. I bet the kids love having you home with them.
Dining out just isn't a thrill to me anymore. I mean, I like ordering a good pizza, but other than that, there isn't anything I can't cook here at home that isn't just as good or better.
Cheers Hammer!!
Well said Hammer.
I'm linking to this tomorrow from The Silverbacks. We need to spread the word far and wide!
we almost never eat out now (at least since we got married a year ago). Frankly, I don't know how peopel afford to eat out and buy groceries. At least when you cook at home, you know what the hell you're eating. Scary how high food proces have gone. Now the "middle class" has to struggle right along w/ the poor to eat well.
I agree with DANA "That's got to be one of the most accurate political analogies I've ever read!"
Oooh....I love cooking WITH my son...actually, I love when my FATHER teaches my son how to cook.
I am shooting for that Hammer. Reducing Debt to House and cars..way cool. I am looking to get completely out of debt (other than cost of living). I have a 3 year goal.

yeah I am so sick of fast food. With this move, we have eaten fast food for over a week. Czu we haven't even eaten till after 9 at night most nights. Tonight will be like our first cooked meal in a bit over a week.
Generic Beer??? You have to draw the line somewhere....and I will skimp on some things, but not my good vodka. :)
hammer - i stopped cold turkey buying ANY styrofoam products (plates and bowls) and soda about a month and a half ago - FIFTY dollar savings which went right into the gas tank.
i started buying the "taco bell" brand refritos and making the burritos at home - guess what? you can make eight of the huge burritos for about four bucks, cheese, salsa, beans, tortillas included!
we're not strapped, but we're not stupid either - it's time for EVERYBODY to tighten their belts.
have i got some handy hints you'll love!

going to the grocery store only once a week helps me. If I stop off to get something i think i need, I end up buying even more stuff I dont need. SO I try and do a few more days until shopping day without the one thing I think I need, just to avoid buying needless stuff. Make sense?
