Tooth day

My youngest daughter goes in for her extractions this morning.
We went for my oldest girl to get checked out yesterday and they tell me her mouth is a mess too and she will have to have several baby teeth extracted over the next couple of years to make sure there is room for her adult teeth to come in straight and have enough room.
I feel bad for putting them through this, but the damage done to their teeth as babies is really going to start affecting them more and more in the next few years.
My son gets his bottom braces next week as well.
Luckily they are all double insured and we have some of the best pediatric dentists close to the house.
Looks like I'll be spending a lot of time in waiting rooms and buying lots of pudding.

Poor mini hammers. It sucks they have to go through that!
We have a ton of dental issues here, too, especially w/ my daughter. She goes for her first orthodontist visit on Tuesday and I already got their, "welcome aboard" letter in the mail. It scared the crap out me! The whole time I'm thinking $$$$$$$$ and a long-term commitment.
Good luck to you!
Dang you get around hammer..everywhere I go I find you there...
Bring a book, or better yet, a laptop. Hope things go well, and I'm sure that they'll appreciate it later in life even if they hate it now.
i'm sure they'll be just fine. dentists are so kid-friendly these days. and, i'm sure they'll love the attention they get from you!
Good luck to your daughter and enjoy the pudding. Cheers Hammer.
Hammer,
I remember my dentist used to set the Laughing Gas and Novacaine for 2 sex packs(Beer) and 4 shots (Tequila) because he knew that this was the point where I just didn't give a shit anymore.

Poor things. Dentist offices are scary. I still feel that way!
That's great that your area has so many good pediatric dentists, and that all your children's dental issues are able to be treated now and not later.
That being said...may all the small Hammers enjoy all the soft food and treats their hearts desire.
Although it will be hard to see them suffer, you, and they, will soon see an improvemnt in more than just their smiles. You'll also see an improvement in their overall general health.
No consolation at the present, but just think of all the reading you'll be able to catch up on in the waiting rooms. :)
We have had to spend so much time on the road and in the waiting rooms for kiddo. His dentist is 2 1/2 hours away.
he has horrid teeth and I felt so bad, that it was something I did or didn't do. The dentist told me that some generations have crappy teeth, and I was doing everything the right way.
I do need to try to get him braces in the next few years. I just don't have the funds for it now.
good luck with the babies, and hope your daughter bounces back real quick.
Even hearing the word dentist makes me cringe...
There is too much pain involved.. The pain of what they do to you and the pain of what they bill you...
I hate Dentists! Did I already say that?
pudding and jello. I recommend the orange jello.
poor things...I had to go get a filling today and now my mouth is throbbing so I feel their pain..hope they feel better soon.
Very glad that you're well insured. Ours only covers 45%. Ouchie.
VERY very glad that you've got good practioners too.
Damn dude, got some British heritage in the family there?
Thanks all. Yeah I avoid the dentist myself. I'm glad I've got good teeth.
My little girls suffered severe neglect and bottle rot because of their birth mother. They both had to have dental surgery as soon as they were taken by the state and put into foster care. Most of their baby teeth were rotten nubs covered by silver caps.
Since the baby teeth didn't develop properly the adult teeth are having a hard time getting through.
Good news is that both dentists say that with some work they should have healthy smiles in a few years.
Hammer,
I had braces back in the Dark Ages where they hammered them on. Ouch. On the plus side, I now have no fear of the dentist, and generally fall asleep in the chair if left there too long.
Good luck!
Poor lambs - I think kids deal better with the pain of braces, but kids often have to wear them longer than adults. I was so stoked when I got mine off last year-- so much so that I've only forgotten to wear my retainers at night a few times in the last year. One important thing is that my orthodontist told me I should chew a stick of sugarless gum after each adjustment (even though I hate gum) to ease the pain afterward - it worked miraculously.
Sorry your lambs are going through the dental trauma, but your keen attention now will hopefully help them to have and enjoy their teeth for a full lifetime - bless you!
Poor children! I hope they do not suffer too much.
Btw: Xylitol candies / chewing gums seem to help against a cariogenic oral flora. Two out of many papers:

and

(PubMed articles can be ordered at public libraries.)
If you should like to give it a try, have a look at the xylitol content. It should not be lower than 70 %.
Orajel (I don't know if I spelled that right...) works great in numbing things up for a few hours.
I love your blog, you've been blogrolled!
