I'm going to go out on a limb here.

During the LA riots back in 92 some people used the anarchy to burn down Korean, Arab and Indian run stores and shops. Why? Because they were jealous. They weren't mad at the cops or the old white guys running the big corporations, they were mad at people who arrived in the US without a goddamn dime and within two years owned a home and a successful business.
Many Americans do not have the work ethic or gumption to get off their asses and make something of themselves.
I don't give a flying fuck if you are a homeless drifter who writes poetry or plays a banjo... at least you are doing something.
How many people complain about being trapped in an office cubicle or working for the man, being held down and not being able to get a break. Fuck breaks! You have to make your own.
These same bastards are buying 6 dollar coffees each morning, eating an 11 dollar lunch at some shit assed bistro and drinking 40 or 50 dollars worth of overpriced booze at some pickup joint at least three times a week.
Wake the hell up! Take some of that cash and put it toward something useful like an education, your own business or a gun to put in your mouth so I don't have to listen to your mealy mouth "woe is me" bullshit anymore.
Some people insist on living like Paris Hilton by way of credit cards, payday loans and floating hot checks. Then they cry like little babies when they are forced to give blowjobs in the park so they don't lose their 40 inch plasma TV and Caddilac
Escalade.
I'm not going to go into all the fucking sacrifices I've made to survive on my own the last 20 years but I will tell you I had furniture that came from in front of a dumpster ate creamed corn and day old bread sandwiches and drove a 20 year old wrecked car with no AC, radio or brakes. Lets just suffice it to say there were no luxuries but the bills were paid, and all my shit was squared away.
It's about priorities
I frequently have to deal with relatives that want to borrow money from me. I find it really difficult to take them seriously when they walk up to my door with a frappacino, pack of Marlboro's and a bag of Burger King telling me that they can't make their cell phone payment and would I please loan them nine hundred fucking dollars.
Nine hundred dollars for a cell phone bill? Are they fucking insane? I told them to throw the fucker away and get a pre-paid phone if it was really a necessity. I even offered to give them my old phone, all they needed was to buy some minutes.
They got really pissed off and haven't spoken to me in over two years. Good riddance assholes.
It just goes to show that the values in this country have gone down the shitter. People care more about their possessions, trivial luxuries and partying than actually thinking about the future or taking steps to fulfill some lasting legacy... other than a mound of debt and a list of lame excuses.

I gotta say, I am about a fucking idiot but have one assset. I work like a lunitic at times but it's the incentive that gives me the drive I need. Without incentive? Hey, I think being hungry and homeless and a fire on your ass would be a last resort kind of incentive but with drugs and alcohol some people would rather ...? Go figure. My buddies simply call it 'too stupid to live' and I agree even though I believe they deserve at least 'one' shot at help and tolerance and in a specefied time frame. Then... sad but sorry.
The choices we make dictate the life we lead.
Next time don't hold back so ... tell us how you really feel!
I have also learned not to get hung-ups with any belongings.
I live a very simple life, no TV, no radio, no car, boat or caravan, no AC, not smoking or drinking ....
(I have plenty of nothing, nothing have plenty of me...)
But I have faith and
work hard and I don't complain. I have my food and bed, roof over my head and I pay my bills.
I agree with most everything you said, but some of that money does have to go towards my blog meet plane fare, or else that would just take the fun out of living, completely.
I'd have to agree with you Hammer. I Recently read an article in "The Week" magazine about the US being the most depressed Nation in the world....and I believe it's for the very reasons you mentioned in this post.
Kirsten: I hear you, I lived the same way for a long time. Gradually I started accumulating stuff and sometimes I feel trapped by possessions. Just seems like more stuff to worry about.
erica: I guess my point is, people shouldn't complain if they squander money needlessly then wonder why they don't have any for the finer things in life, like blog meets :D
tysgirl: I think consumerism is taking it's toll. everyone has to have everything right now and it ends up creating huge and seemingly insurmountable debt.
I have been letting steam build in me for almost a year now becuase The Man was keeping me down. Today I have some cash to tide me over for awhile so my last day is today and I'm striking out on my own...No excuses, no regrets, just me against the world for awhile. Cheers!!
BRAVO!
I used to be that person. God, I'm only 23, and I've already been there. Now I'm a student living waaaaay below poverty level (well, until Monday, when I start my ridiculously-well-paying summer job), and I'm a lot happier. No car payment, no overage bills for my cell phone (I keep all of the minutes because it's my primary phone, but I don't use them...Cingular doesn't seem to think anyone needs any fewer than 450 minutes, though, so whatever), minimal car repair bills (yay Toyota), my shoe addiction is in check, no cable bill, etc, etc. The only things I really splurge on are food and books. I almost went insane last year because of owing so many people so much money for so many things (mostly related to the shitty Kia I was driving).
I believe it that this is the most depressed nation in the world. When you're THAT concerned with things outside of yourself, you're bound to neglect the simplest things needed to survive psychologically.
Aaaand...longest comment ever. I'm done. :-)
I've been reading something like this recently, and today in the paper there was a (national, so there weren't obvious errors) article comparing peoples' financial situations now and something like 30 years ago.
I think credit cards are our downfall. It's so easy to overspend if you aren't counting cash out of your wallet. This country has become a culture of "gimme more". No wonder other countries hate us.
Beautifully said, Hammer. Living life intelligently, taking care of your responsibilities, making your own luck... all are good things...
There is no excuse for debt that buries you. If you want options and to enjoy peace of mind, don't make purchases you can't afford. Work for what you have. Save. Be prudent.
Hope you and your family have a happy Mother's Day on Sunday --
I'm off to Yosemite -- will be back on the 19th, and will loook forward to reading what's been going on with you when I get back !
You said it perfect Hammer
your shit was squared away
I have a major beef with the welfare recipients who eat off my tax dollars yet drive brand new vans and buy flat panel TV's. I think we should discontinue free food programs for the indingent and feed our war veterans.
Most of the indingent can get jobs, but why do so when food is free and they can stay home and make babies all afternoon. More babies, more free money.
Credit cards come in the mail to me every fucking day. I still don't have one. This bullshit depressed nation is a result of the hippie baby boomer assholes mantra, "If it feels good do it." The most irresponsible generation since fucking cavemen is running the country, running the big greedy corporations, creating loser brats who still soak off of them well into their twenties, and every other position of authority today. It's going to take a few more generations to fix the mess these assholes have made of the country, if it can even survive what's left of them. They want to put one lesbian leftover into the whitehouse now too. I am ashamed to say I am hanging on the tail end of that generation. Maybe I'm oversimplifying, but I really blame it all on the boomer generation.
Oh Hammer that is so very true. You know when I was a teenager, I got to drive one of my mom's cars. One of her beat up, no power steering, no a/c, junker cars. When I was 18 I was told to buy my own.
I moved away from home and had to live off of top ramen and mac and cheese quite often. I think every kid/young adult should have to. Teaches you. I don't think parents should bail out their young adults all the time.
Gigantor and I have worked hard for what we have, but if times got tough it would be easy for me to turn off cell phones, real phone, internet, t.v. and get rid of one of the vehicles. I don't understand people who bitch about no money, yet get a brand new car every 2 years, or have 6 cell phones in their house.
Whatever. We worked hard for what we have, and we enjoy it now. But we aren't stupid enough to not be able to give it up either.
I agree, success doesn't just fall in your lap, you need to bust your ass to make it happen. How the fuck do you rack up a $900 cell phone bill??? That's crazy! Since you are the grounded one that has your shit together, you are also the one who everyone comes to which sucks, b/c obviously you worked you ass of and made the sacrifices that they are not willing to make.
You are so right. People care more for there supped up cars and phones than they do anything else now a days. Its a miracle any body has any money to pay these bills they call neccessities. Well I suppose. I need to take Brianna to Wal Mart to have her pix done that my mom is paying for. Only the 7 dollar package but still getting them done. LOL...
good thing you do not get worked up over something like this or somebody would probably find a cell phone shoved up their A**.
Could you put your name on the Presidential ballot please? I'd like to vote for you.
I have a simple test when deciding whether or not to buy something, I just ask myself is this something I need or want. If I can't say for sure it's something I need, I don't buy it. It helps keeps the expenses down, which is important considering I have no money right now.
Amen!
You speak the truth oh sage one! So many who grow up here are unaware of any work ethic or delayed gratification. So immigrants do very well. They know what it's like to have no opportunity or to work their asses off for next to nothing - it's far easier here to make something of yourself. But we want everything now and want 3 months holidays a year. Furthermore, they think self-employed means rich and lazy days. hahahahaha but they won't take the risk anyway because they might find out that they really aren't worth what their boss is paying them.
HURRAH.
You tell em bud.
If you want something , get off your ass and work for it
"... a gun to put in your mouth so I don't have to listen to your mealy mouth "woe is me" bullshit anymore."
It's gonna take me a minute to stop laughing! I've missed the scatalogical euphamisms... haven't seen you come up with a good new one in a while... but that statement right there makes up for it. It also make me feel like less of a meanie when I know I'm not the only person who feels an urge to say things like that.
Pre-paid cells really are the way to go. Not tied to a contract, no wierd charges... it's great. Of course, it's also the reason I do most talking on the phone at night. Nights and weekends are free for me.
Good Job Hammer. Let it out.
This reminds me of a story. Later I will post on it.
I am just stating for the record - I bitch about my job all the time. Moaning and groaning is a daily thing for me. But it is not because I am being held back, because there isn't enough work - big difference.
Okay, I'll shut up now.
matt-man: Congrats! I hope you kick ass and take names :)
bonnie: It sounds like you have the right idea, I made a lot of mistakes with debt and money and it's so totally not worth the stress.
janet: It seems our ecoomy is pinned on people squandering every last dime they make. I'm afraid what will happen if it this delicate balance fails
Annie: thank you! you said it all right there. have a great time in Yosemite!
Fyremandoug: thanks :)
Marianne: You hit on a very important topic, how dare they increase the welfare rolls for the able bodied when we have disabled veterans coming back to nothing.
JP: My parents were boomers and you are exactly right. the previous generation came right off the depression and didn't know much about money except how not to have any. Their kids went wild and bought into the booming economy with little thought to personal responsibility and morality. Now we are screwed. Luckily I was able to learn from their mistakes.
Burfica: I agree with tossing out these luxuries if things got tight. So many confuse luxuries and necessities these days.
Jenny: The people who come to me for money also lie, cheat and have no clue about living responsibly. Lending them money is like giving to beggars, it helps nobody but the guy at the liquor store.
Tweety: It's no wonder personal bankruptcies are at an all time high. I don't think family pictures are frivolous at all. I get the 9.99 at target then scan them and print later :)
editor: Oh I've been sorely tempted. ;)
terri: lol I wouldn't make it five steps before I was shot stabbed poisoned and disavowed ;) But thanks for the vote of confidence :D
Brandon: I went through my bills and did the same thing. My wife thought I was being mean but now she doesn't miss any of it.
freddie: Thanks for visiting :D
Jeannie: So true, People don't realize how little they are really worth until they own their own business. I was tempted to hire someone to help me one time but then I realized they would have to be paid more than I was willing to let go of.
Beast: I'm trying to teach that to my kids right now with limited success :)
nyx: I'll have to take some fiber and go think up some euphemisms :)
Pre paid is the best way to go. lol I kind of sound like a meanie in this post but it's just tough love ;)
snowmanpoop: thanks I'll come by and check it out.
ralphdood: I probably bitched about every job I had too. I was still happy to have one when everyone else seemed to be unemployed.
Amen Hammer! I never got a damn thing handed to me yet I watch friends talk about needing damn Coach bag that costs $400 because her friend got one. I used to be jealous that people got what they got but now I know better. I will survive if there was some sort of disaster. It sure does build character, doesn't it pal?
$900 cell phone bill? That's messed up. They coulda bought 2 Coach bags for that... maybe 4 if they went to the outlet store.
...I've found that it's very easy to preach this kind of fiscal responsibility, but hard to live it. You need to work hard to save money.
You really need to get in touch with your inner anger, Hammer.
I mean, if you keep it all bottled up like this, the health consequences could be dire.
Loved that. It was so true.
Glad I'm a hard worker.
OK Bro- Here is my rebuttal to everything you said.... Hmmm
Let's see... DAMN- I don't have one! I think you know by now I satnd right beside you on those issues.
We recently had Chapter 13 discharged- made EVERY payment on time for five years to take care of major medical bills and credit card debt from living the American Dream- caused me to have a Triple Bypass at 50!!. PROUD OF IT (not the bypass)- and now EVERYDAY I get- "we recently noticed form public records.. bl bl blah- So let US help you CLimb right back into debt over your head, you deserve it, your paid your debt etc!
What the F___--- Exactly- I deserve to have my ass kicked for going into debt in the first place and losibng a Home we built! I accept that responsibility from being IRRESPONSIBLE and refuse to repeat said Dumbassedness!
Look at the numbers on this post Bro- think you hit a nerve ,---and a great topic? Kudos to ALL respondees.
Uh Hamer- Can you send another $200.00 to Pay Pal- I swear this will be the last time but some WWR WRASTLIN is coming on pay per view and my Plasmea TV has a little burn in......:-)
J
I just love that picture. I'd like to have that on a bunch of postcards and send it to idjits that I know.
My father and I have this argument all the time. He wants me to send money down to Cuba to my family there. Last time I did so, I found out that most of it went to that corrupt government down there. My answer to my dad nowadays, is hey...let them start a new revolution. I am giving them money so that they can trashmouth my country and how I live? I think not!
I think you have a point but I don't think that it is limited to this country.
Flyinfox_SATX
Carrie: I think keeping up with the Jones has gone to the extreme.
Minijonb: It sure is! Saving money is much harder than just living within our means. I'd be happy if people could just learn to do paycheck to paycheck without using debt to cushion it.
Joceyln: So true I had better let my true feelings out in my next post ;D
John: After making stupid mistakes I did Chapter 13 as well. Took me about 6 years but I paid every one of those bastards. They still innudate me with credit card crap. All I have is house and one car payment and I plan to keep it that way.
lol on the wrastlin :D
Choo Choo It's a good one I should modify it for more profound messages :)
flyinfox: I didn't know the government took a cut although I read that the cuban post office was stealing cash out the mail. I think you're right. I don't agree with supporting castro's corrupt regime.
Its amazing what we buy and think essential which we don't need -life is not a dress rehearsal Mr H - we all need to get on and enjoy it without being in thrall to fashion and shit...
Amen! When I worked for my church group- we knew many of our clients, (people who were asking for help- mostly money) had "Self-Inflicted Poverty, created by their choices of havingkids too early, not finishing school, and a unrealistic view of "what the world owes me (it owes you nothing).
Poor choices, and I must have it immediately mentality. Not I NEED it, But I WANT it.
Handling relatives is HARD, but getting them to pay you back is IMPOSSIBLE.
I would have said,
I will consider lending you the 900 dollars if you can tell me what the conversation was about that ran the bill up so high, and why you had to have it using daytime minutes?
then they could leave being mad at themselves.
RIGHT ON!!
I think your shiftless relatives are related to my hubby's.
They just HAD to blacktop their driveway for $3000, but didn't have the money for their house payment 2 weeks later. They didn't have any food in the house, but 2 days later they could bounce a check to go to the State Fair...and on..and on....
We had some rather nice dumpster furniture for the first 10 years of our marriage.
I agree with the 'getting the priorities right'. It all comes down to it. money, health, career, family, and it does not have to be in any specific order, just the priority of the moment until priority need to change to match the new circumstances. I think I'm doing pretty good at this now.
Your family and friends are rubbish. It's as if they just want to take advantage of you... unless they felt ashamed. nah, still must be rubbish. I don't envy you. At least you have your own lovely family.
By the way, has your wife started playing FFXII? I'm near the end now... it's very good. :D
Mutley: Very well said.
Debbie: I know one person who often finds herself at the food bank because she drinks two bottles of wine each night while her kids live on WIC.
infini: The person in question is my wife's sister. She gets theses high paying jobs, runs up all her credit acting like a big shot. One Christmas she bought everyone a phone, about 6 in all just to show off and just added them to her calling plan. As always she was caught lying and falsifying records at work, got fired and went three months delinquent. She wanted the 900 to avoid telling everyone she showed off to that she was a stupid broke ass phoney.
tshsmom: Exactly! It's borderline retarded.
la cremeiere: The have no shame,no conscience, or morals. They are users and borderline sociopaths.
Haven't bought FFX yet. I have to prepare for not seeing my wife for 3 months or so once she starts ;)
I wish I could say Canadians had found a way to avoid these trappings but it just isn't so. Getting rid of all my credit cards was really hard but it was sooooooooo worth it, and now I don't miss them at all!!!!
Don't look at me, all I have is all I need and I have it great for personal comforts.
Soooooo, I guess the 200 for Wrastlin... was a No?
OK- Dokey. Just keep an eye on your freakin Pets! Loan Officer Boy!!!!
I hust realized who bbc is--- == God!!! LMAO!
So Perfect, Rich, No Problems, All Wise, All (NO-ing pun intended)
OM- IMPOTENT. I bow.
J
they cry like little babies when they are forced to give blowjobs in the park so they don't lose their 40 inch plasma TV and Cadilac
Escalade. ROTFLMAO.
Life is all about choices & always involves opportunity costs.
On another note, I was at the river this week climbing on some rocks when the peace was disturbed by a grown woman whining in shrill, echoing glory about the water being cold. Duh! The sound of her whining chilled me more than that water ever could.
You might enjoy the FU post over at http://myhaystack.blogspot.com. I think it is like the 2nd or 3rd one down. Sometimes you just have to say fuck you. Peace & love does require some spit & fire!
Preach on baby. Preach on. Back in the mid 1800s, the conventional, pull-yourself-up-by-your-own-bootstraps wisdom in this country said that if you came into this country with nothing and spent more than ten years as a wage earner, and hadn't started your own business, it was your own fault. That sentiment acted as a break on serious welfare reforms. Most people were making it, and assumed the folks that weren't were ether stupid or lazy. Then comes the depression, and now every segment of society is dependent on the government, and every politician knows how to spend the taxpayers money to serve those needs to stay in office. So, we spiral into a never ending pit of indebtedness and squalor, whining all the way about how our own share is too small, and the other guy should be cut. I think the only thing that keeps this country together now in the sense of dependence. Once the government tit goes away, the shit will hit the fan. Lock and load.
Wow, that stinks. I guess people just don't see how ridiculous they've become. I noticed something similar when the whole Katrina went down. Of course it became yet another reason to jump onto Bush's back with both feet, and the news kept showing all these groups of people out in the streets and on overpasses whining about "where's our help?" Well, I did feel bad, but not how they wanted me to. I noticed that the people escaping the flooding were all smoking cigarettes and I wondered, why they didn't just take a backpack full of water bottles and granola bars. That's what I would do. I have to get ready for hurricanes year in, year out. I had no sympathy for people who live in a hurricane prone area who had money for cartons of cigarettes and other crap, but were too dang sorry to buy a couple of cases of bottled water and non perishable foods, just in case.
You did the right thing. It's as if they come to you, knowing you'll NOT give them the money they ask for just so they can then have something to point their finger at you for.
canadian flake: Me too it was liberating!
john: lol I charge loanshark rates ;) And yeah you nailed it :D
Skinny blonde: thank you for the link I enjoyed it very much :)
FHB: I kind of wish things went back to the way they were when we depended only on ourselves, hell I don't rely on any public programs right now. I've never been helped by the police or welfare and social security has taken a quater million from me that I will never see again. Men in my family don't make it past 65. Yep Lock N load.
JAM: Katrina is a heck of a good comparison. when I watched all those professional victims on the news I couldn't help but feel bad for the state of our nation.
and yeah they are still pointing fingers at me. Frigging losers I can't stand em.
Hear, hear!!!!! (again, not sure WHICH here to use!!??)Well said. Agree with it all!!
We have a lot of Indians owning dairies here and people HATE them - I say, buy a dairy and work 7 days a week 12 hours a day then!!!!! They don't want to, of course!!!
Anyway, it's a risk going out on your own, pursuing a 'dream', but I'm damn sure I don't want a 9-5 job that I hate again!!!!! I'd rather be broke!! =D
KB: You nailed it. People want things and are jealous of what others have but aren't willing to make any sacrifices.
I'd rather be just be happy with what I have.
