Shoplifters beware!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18533937?GT1=9951

ATTALLA, Ala. - Shoppers entering the Wal-Mart Supercenter here got a reminder not to try anything funny: Two shoplifters stood outside with signs reading “I am a thief, I stole from Wal-Mart.”

Bwahahahhahahh!!!

Attalla City Judge Kenneth Robertson Jr. ordered the two people to wear the signs for four hours each during two successive Saturdays.

Good. Public humiliation might be what this country is sorely lacking.

“The only comments we’ve heard so far have been positive,” said store manager Neil Hawkins. “Most of them thought it was a good thing.”

You're damn right it is.

One of the shoplifters, Lisa King Fithian, 46, wore the sign from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to avoid a 60-day jail sentence. Another convicted shoplifter was at the store from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fithian maintained her innocence. She said her conviction was based on a misunderstanding: She said she was taking a $7 item to the service desk because it would not scan.

Cough (bullshit) (Cough)

Outside the store, she said people who saw her wearing the sandwich board commented that the punishment was “cruel.”

What's cruel is the 20 billion dollars each year in lost revenues and higher prices because of thieving assholes like this.

Hawkins noted how embarrassing it would be for the public to see someone who got caught shoplifting. “Maybe they’ll think twice about doing it,” he said.

Maybe they should implement this as the standard punishment for first time offenders. I hope mama saw them in front of Walmart wearing their scarlet letter.

I love it. I'd venture to guess public humiliation drives the lesson home quite nicely!

Attalla is not far from where I live and I can just picture it. Wish I would have known about this before hand. I might have visited. :)

I think it's a great punishment.

Sounds good to me! Bring back the old stocks in the public square too. I'll bet these things would be a deterent - 3 squares and a butt plunger don't seem to be working.

As a parent, I think this is a great idea. I have ALWAYS told my gremlins that if they EVER try to take something that isn't theirs they BETTER hope the cops get them because the police will surely be more merciful that I would be!!!!

Yup

Like in the old west

Fill them full of bullet holes and display them on main street.

It's what once helped tame this country

Well, it's not all that tamed yet

But shame is a powerful tool

Ham-head, I couldn't agree with you more. There was an article in our paper this morning about a girl I went to school with. She and another friend were going to steal some clothes from Gabriel's which is a store that sells things other stores can't sell. The friend loaded up her cart, and the girl I knew sold her 1500 dollars worth of women's, children's and men's clothing for 20 bucks. Now, here's the kicker. This girl I knew said her punishment should not be as severe as the other girl, because the other girl took all the clothes and refused to share!!

This is the best idea! Public embarrassment, and if that didn't work and they're repeat offenders bring on the pink underware and tents.
You know next they'll be sueing and winning because it damaged them mentally for life or something.
I'll tell you I stole bubble gum when I was little and got marched right back to the store, I even think my mom had me by the ear and I was high stepping. But the truth of the matter was I was made to tell what I did and offer payment for it and then I got a spanking when I got home. I never stole again. Public humilaiation works.

I love it when my officers catch the theives in action. Man I wish they could slap signs on them right then and there. That along with a good public flogging would make me smile

it's a good one and doesn't burn up taxpayer dollars. i think we should start up a petition now to bring this full circle.

there are people who think that drivers convicted of DUIs having to put special yellow plates on their cars is cruel and unusual. I say "way to go-now I can avoid them!".

That's great! There pictures should be taken wearing the signs and posted in the front of the store forever!

I thought this was a great story. Let's hear it for the south!

I honestly couldn't believe that it got to the point where the theifs actually had to do this. Usually appeals judges stomp rulings like this down so fast the bums never have to actually do it.

I always thought Singapore's public canings was the way to go for stuff like this. My mom's and dad's belts sure straightened my childhood self up quick.

I think it's a great idea. I'll bet that woman standing infront of the walmart learned more in a few hours than she would have in 60 days of county jail. Shame is the ultimate deterent

Have a good summer Hammer... I'll be back in the Fall to catch up with your blog.

I think its great punishment. But the only problem with that is when our youngest was still in the infant seat we had put some Kool aid packets under her leg where they wouldnt fall out of the cart and then we accidently walked out of the store with them. So what ever these people are trying to walk out with are doing more than walking out with Kool Aide packets. LOL..

Sounds like a lot of folks think this is a good punishment. Maybe we should add picking up trash in the parking lot and returning shopping carts for restitution.

Hello, fucktards!! Punishment is supposed to be cruel and embarassing, in hopes you won't do something stupid anymore. That's a big reason we have so many criminals. The punishment isn't worse than what they already live with. good grief. They should be happy they didn't cut off the offending hand. lol

If only we used shame more often. Maybe people would actually learn.

I love it! Everyone should do that. It is better than throwing them in jail so that we have to pay for these losers.
