I'm going to post some of my favorite quotes I've read over the years.
These phrases have been selected for their, poignancy, wit and wisdom.

The Mark Twain quotes are my favorites !
Hammer, these are awesome. I love quotes. The ones you have here remind me that although we're much more technically advanced than in Jefferson's day, if anything, we've regressed in our thinking.
Love him or hate him, you cannot deny the sheer power and force of will Reagan had, heck, Truman too for that metter. I think W has the force of will, but sorely lacks in the ability to get his point across effectively to American's.
I think if one person in the next year or so would step into the presidential race that has that kind of will AND the elusive ability to get the American people to understand him when he speaks, that person will be a shoo-in for president. The only person I see right now, Democrat or Republican, who is even in the ball park is former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson, of Law and Order fame.

The "with us or against us" quote is so far off base and full of arrogant posturing that I don't know where to begin.
One of GW's biggest faults is his monochromatic outlook on life.

The biggest "fault" with Democracy such as we know it, is that we get complacent and stop being involved.Basic Civics teaches us that we are a Nation ruled by ourselves, yet so many of us want to separate "us" from "government", who has become the evil "them".
Them IS us. So many have seemed to have forgotten that.
The 51% tyranny of the majority is the necessary outcome of self government. There is no other "fair" alternative. Unless one wishes to revert back to an Oligarchy or perhaps mimic Stalin's days?
Didn't think so.
So what you get is 49% of the populace holding their noses and shakng their heads everytime they hear the word "nucular" and "decider" and vowing "never again"...

BBC - So, you wanna be a citizen of the world? Wait till THAT tax bill arives. Nationalism has been one of the most negative, distructive "isms" in the history of the world, but that doesn't lead me to think I'd be better off subordinating my life to the will of some worldwide collective. THE cold war, the one we all grew up with, is long over, but conflict is a natural and normal human condition. As long as nations compete to wriggle higher up the pile, we at the top of the pile will have to keep swatting them. Being at the top means we're automatically against anything that shakes the pile. Folks stuck further down will wiggle to get a better pos, and we'll swat, unless they wiggle politely and get our consent to move up a bit. This is the way things have always been. The natural way of things. Don't see it changin' any time soon. That's why I miss Reagan, not that he didn't have his fair share of screw ups. They all do.
And I think that quote had something to do with the Napoleonic years, but I may be wrong. I'm still lookin' for where I found it. I think it came from one of PJ O'Rourke's books, about a trip he did through Lebanon in the 80s or early 90s. He quoted someone else.

You guys are kidding right?? Our country, The United States of America, is NOT a democracy (thank goodness) and never has been. Jefferson having second thoughts? No, he was against the idea of democracy as were the other authors of our constitution. This is why we are a REPUBLIC :) and always have been.
I really love what Jefferson said about rights to bear arms. There is too much stereotyping going on these days. Just because I am a liberal people assume that I don't respect the constitution. I believe it should not be overthrown as Lincoln says.
