Things that make you go hmmmm.....

I have a basic phone line with nothing on it. It's supposed to be $22 per month.

I've been paying $34.... So after taking a look at the itemization it seems that I get charged $5.50 per month NOT to be in the phone book or listed online (you know where someone finds what name your IP is registered under, types it in and sees your address, googles it and comes and kills you for calling him an asshat on his blog.)

Why in the fuck would I have to pay $66 per year ($396 since I had the phone line) to stay out of the directory. I'm seriously considering cancelling the line and using my cell phone.

Also, they told me it costs $10 per month to NOT have a long distance carrier. Holy shit balls Batman!! I have to pay NOT to have my name in a fucking book and to NOT have a long distance carrier. Something is seriously Fucked here. That's like GM charging me extra to buy a Suburban instead of an Escalade.

When I talked to the customer service lady, she said that if I used AT&T long distance it would only cost me $2.00 per month...I told her I have free long distance on my cell phone and would never call on my land line anyway. So why in the hell do I have to buy and pay for things I don't use and cost them nothing.
"Rules are rules" she said.
I'm really surprised that with all the competition from cell phones that the reformed Ma Bell is still pulling this highway robbery bullshit.

I strictly use my cell phone. I have not missed the land line.

That's why me & my roommate don't have a land line, there's no point since we both have cell phones and we have cable internet.

Drop the landline. If you ever need it back, they'll come begging with hat in hand. You should have seen how much BellSouth kissed my ass after I dropped my home phone.

As I recall, you can still call 911 after your phone service has been disconnected, so at least you'd still have that.

I agree with the other here. Now with SKYPE on the net and moblie/cell-phone, one don't need any landline any more. I have Skype net-call on my computer and my cell-phone and can call over the world, almost FREE.
By SMS I chat with friends and family on the other side of the world to close to no cost.
I also have sms.ac free account, that allows me to send SMS from my computer to private moblie as a security if my recharging card on my cell-phone is finished.

Like you, I am tempted to cancel the land line, but my better half insists we keep it. We still have non-timed flat rate local calls.

I dropped my landline and there's sometimes I get to missing it. But really, the equipment had cobwebs. Never could train myself to use the landline, therefore, I am paying a finger and a toe every month to SPRINT. Of course I use the plan with the most minutes and it's pricey.
I long for the 35.00 bill. Jeez.

I have to have a land line to get on the internet.

I have basic service with Qwest and it runs about 22 a month and it comes with 'local' long distance.

My internet through AT&T is $14.95 a month, so $34.95 a month is my total fees for phone and internet.I would pay more for DSL but it isn't available where I'm at. Sigh.

I don't care if my number is in the phone book, or on the internet. Anyone that wants to can easily find me and my number.

And guess what? It doesn't mean that the world is going to beat a path to your door, anyone that thinks that is just paranoid.

Give me a call at 360-452-5565

You can talk to my answering machine because I NEVER answer my phone. He, he, he.

I seldom use a phone to call anyone except for business. To me a phone is just a business tool. I don't have any use for bullshitting on one.

Those that want to bullshit can send me an email.

maybe if you said that you were going to drop them as landline carriers (because they were overcharging for things that were ridiculous), then they would drop all that extra crap.

This stuff makes me really MAD! I hate how these companies rip people off!

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I haven't had one problem with Quest and the service has been good when the line wasn't working, they get right on it and fix it.

Helen's phone died a few months ago, she has a service contract with AT&T so they sent her a new phone the next day. It was the wrong phone, they sent her another one overnight.

So we are happy with the service.

I could get cable, and high speed internet that way, but then I wouldn't have as much money to help others. I guess I just have different priorities than most of you.

But I'm okay with that, I'm okay with living in a single room. There are people on this planet that don't even have a sheet of tin to put over their head.

I'm very thankful for what I have, and the fact that it is paid for and belongs to me.

Choochoo.... You can say that again.

Oh, I have a cell phone, bought it in a moment of stupidity. I have to add more air time to it every two months so that is twenty bucks each time.

I've only used it about five times so the minutes just keep building up. I should just give it away.

Very few people look at the itemization on thier bills... I think all those companies count on that to a certain extent. If you call thier bluff and bitch long and loud enough - they will quit charging you. It takes about 2 months and 20 phone calls. Don't give up. A land line is useful once in awhile.

It beats sending a smoke signal which is my option where I live.

That's just wrong. I wish I could send a bill to everyone in my database who doesn't come in to tan.

Are you seriously telling me you have to choose a second company just to be able to call outside your local area? That's unbelievable!! We can get as many service suppliers as we want with smartboxes and pincodes/whatever systems added but we don't HAVE to. But why don't you spend the $2 to save $8? I don't understand that? I do understand why you're annoyed but I don't get why not just get AT&T??
Well I'm gonna shuttup I know nothing about American phones except they riiiiiiiiiing longer, 'stead of ring-ringing like ours ...
OK, well I keep a blog too, it's at gledwood2.blogspot. It is very different to yours. You're most welcome to drop by if you like- and you can enter my fantabulous competition while you're there!! Guess what starsign the horrorscope comes from!! No-one's done it yet ...
Okay I'll see ya later. If you're wondering how I found you it was via Dan the Man's blog ...

Okay, take care

Hammer,

Don't drop the land line...they might charge you for it if you do. If their thinking holds consistant, you are paying for NOT having long distance, you are paying for NOT being in the phone book. Could you imaging how much you would be paying NOT to have a land line? C'mon and face it, they got you and they got you bad!

All kidding aside, if you have high speed internet, ever consider something like Vonage?

thanks for stopping by gledwood.

I'll call and bitch to see if they'll cut my nonsense charges.

BBC I have to keep my stuff private because my kids are adopted from felons who have attempted to kidnap them from their foster homes.

I'll see what Ma Bell has to say.

Flyinfox: My cable has been flakey for a while now and Time warner isn't helping, I can't get DSL because I'm too far from the exchange.

If I can get these bugs worked out I might look into that.

Just my 2 cts.
We got rid of everything on our house phone except the basic connection. It costs us a whopping $3 a month, and we only kept that because we need it for our dialup. The phone book listing is in my wife's name, but with no address, and if anyone we really want to talk with wants to talk with us, they've got our cell phone numbers. Long distance calls? We use our cell phones for it.

I think normal land lines are dying out man - so they want to squeeze the last profits from them as they can.

At February 8, 2007 at 7:06 AM , Anonymous Ordinary Janet said...

Give them points for creativity. They haven't yet started charging for how many people are in your house that potentially could use the telephone.

I guess we are being driven to use our cell phones instead of landlines. Shame, isn't it, and appalling that you get charrged for what you don't want to have --

At February 8, 2007 at 8:31 AM , Anonymous LeeAnn said...

Next time anyone starts their new phone service put the phone in someone else's name; your mother's name perhaps. That way you aren't listed and then you don't have to pay for the unlisted charge. The phone company doesn't care who's name is on the check paying the phone bill. It's an easy cheat.

At February 8, 2007 at 10:12 AM , Anonymous Burfica said...

they have to have 911 service, so if you have no phone line, you can still call 911. I would cancel and just keep the cell phone. We are thinking that route also. And keeping it plugged in for 911.

That is total crap! I haven't had a land line in years.

At February 8, 2007 at 2:50 PM , Anonymous JP said...

They have to stoop to any level they can at this point. They own cell companies now too so it really isn't all that tough on them if we give up our land lines. The added surcharges and transfer fees and taxes and linen charges with bar tabs and tips make the cell phone bills look about as shady. When was the last time that $59.95 a month plan cost $59.95?

It is insane! Hubby works for AT&T (not customer service) and one of the perks is free telephone and internet. BUT, get this, since we live outside of corporate Austin we get nada service from AT&T! So I have Verizon.

Thanks for all the comments:

I called em today and they said nothing they can do it's on some tarriff agreement.

I told them that I'm going to cancel at the end of the month.

Good news is I'm going to get AT&T internet and television and save about 70 bucks a month with their deal and finally get out from under this expensive and always broken roadrunner bullshit.
