More on blogging

I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to blogging. I read about 90 blogs regularly and I get a little something out of each one. It's like reading a newspaper all the way through. There is no right or wrong way to write a blog. It's like millions of open diaries, editorials, books in progress, self affirmations and social commentary.

I notice that people handle their blogs and comments in a number of different ways due to time constraints, personality or other unknown reasons.

Here are some major types:

Blog and lurk: They write a daily blog and will sometimes refer to some that they read but rarely comment on others.

Blog and discuss: They answer each commenter with an individual comment of their own.

Blog and visit: They write a post then go visit all their regular reads to say hi and leave a short comment.

Hermit blogger: Blogs and leaves discussion up to the readers. Rarely gets involved with follow up comments unless one is good enough or bad enough to spark a new blog entry.

Thoughtful blogger: Neglects their own blog and writes all their good stuff in the comments of other people's blogs.

Mass responder: Waits until they have a number of comments and answers them in one long comment.

Snide sniper: Picks one thing out of someones post and writes a shitty snide remark, while ignoring the main point of the story.

Cookoo commenter: Doesn't read the blog entry but comments anyway with something out of left field.

Stalin blogger: Enables comment moderation and only picks the ones that perfectly fit his or her world view and deletes the rest.

Terry Testosterone: Likes to insult, incite and make disparaging comments regarding the blog topic and the blog owner. Not shy about disagreeing vehemently with other commenters.

All for me none for thee: Loves comments on their blog but will rarely visit or acknowledge loyal readers.

Offline blogger: Won't respond to posts or comment on others blogs but will send a nice note through Email to say they liked what you wrote.

What kind are you? Which ones do you prefer?

I'm not sure what kind of blogger I am. I saw myself in a few of your examples. I suppose I comment when I have something to offer worth anyone's time to read. When I enjoy someones writing, like yours, I return regularly. What I like about yours in particular is that we have had many similar experiences and you sometimes jar my memories. Often you will inspire a subject long forgotten.
I like to respond to individual comments. I used to only get one or two so it was easy.

JP: thanks, I'm still evolving and figuring out where to put myself.
I have to admit your blog triggers more than a few memories and ideas for topics. You are one of the few that are descriptive to the point where pictures are often unecessary.

I pick D. All of the above. hehehehe Not all of them, but I've been guilty of a few of those.

Which do you consider yourself??

I usually read comments through my email so I am not "in the box" to respond to everything that is left at Aeleope.

While I appreciate every comment, the idea of calling out every name and thanking them, or returning a comment with a comment, reminds me a bit of departing an airplane and the ritual the stewards and stewardesses go through before they can get the hell out of dodge themselves.

One other blogging type, of note, is the blogger who intentionally leaves really nice comments in people's boxes with an invitaion to "come see my blog".

The fisherbloggerman?

Oh hell, lets try anyway.

I may be wrong, but I think I tend to be a combination of blog and visit and thoughtful blogger. Any other insights would be welcome, since we tend to see ourselves in a different light than others.

Burfica: I'm a mass responder and I visit every blog as it updates daily but I only comment when I have something remotely sentient to say.

Scott: Yep the "thank you for your comment canned responses are ones I didn't consider. and fishbloggerman is one I don't particularly like. It's better to start reading because you like it and comment when appropriate to start a real blogging relationship.

BBC: that sounds fair lol.

Bobg: I think you nailed it.

David Bowie is on repeat in my head

i drank soymilk chai for breakfast with an excedrin

now i am eating a lean cuisine chicken and potato w/ stuffing dealy-bob.

Last night I dreamed about my best frien from Houston. She was tall thin and blone instead of short and round.

She was going to right the world of injustice and gayness.

Gayness? I asked?

She explained it was possible to convert the world to lesbianism.
(she was not, in addition to tall and blonde, a lesbian, back in high school)

OK, so, i did not post, this is not on topic, and it's the best i could do, I'd say i hit at least 3 categories in one eh?

I consider myself a blog and visit.

I don't really like blog and lurk.

I get a lot of offline bloggers.

Good job listing blogger stereotypes.

I'm a blog and visit kinda guy, with manifestations of lurker tendencies. ;)

Hammer, you have an obsession with categories and labels. It seems you are an organized thinker, and try to understand people and issues by class and category. I do much the same, but never let it become obsessive.
I read another blogger who likes to count stats, and posts his findings as to which post got the most hits and the most comments, etc.
I used to pay a lot of attention to my counter but now it isn't so important.
It's interesting to note how some people write their best articles in the comments to others rather than their own blogs. I do find other blogs a source of inspiration for subjects to blog about. That's what keeps me going.

Infinitesimal: hahaha!

LBB: thanks!

Carrie: me too. I'd like to thank them personally but I guess they're just shy.

Helene' thanks! Enjoy your trip!

ambulance driver: I used to lurk a lot since my forays into newsgroups and such was met with extreme rudeness. The blogosphere is much more friendly..for the most part.

Lexcen: lol I'm not really obsessive but what happens is once incident or obvious pattern will make me think of the whole picture.

I used to be amazed by the counter but now I realize 90% of it is people looking for horse porn. If I have a lot to say about something I'll write my own entry and link the blogger who got me to thinking. that makes for a win win.

I think I am a Blog and Visit.

I start my day by reading the e-mails, go to my blog and read the comments and answer, then read the news and other bloggs and make comments. At the end...I make my own post for the day. (Jump and dance/cry or laugh/ anger or solace blog)
((Is that a sign of splitted personality?)) :O

I have always had the sence for rutine...

I love these categories. I used to read blogs, but until I started writing my own, I never would comment on them. Now I understand wanting/enjoying that sense (which one gets through comments) that there's a real audience, real people out there. When people I know in daily life say, "Oh, I read your blog," I actually think, "And you didn't leave a comment? C'mon. Leave a comment."

Silly, but true.

You are very insightful into the world of blogging! I am not a fan of lurkers, it doesn't take but two seconds to leave a comment! How lazy people!

Guess I'm a blog and visit. I lurk if I'm in a bad mood because I'm not too chatty then. I find it difficult to acknowledge every comment because I start to feel like the air steward mentioned previously and usually people complete the thought on their own anyway plus I don't know if they even check back to see if I said anything back to them. If I want to make sure - I make a comment on their blog - which probably makes me look like the cuckoo commenter

I love to read my favorites... comment on a few... but I confess I love to get comments, Guess I'm a closet comment ho'?? lol Sometimes if its a writing or a poem I enjoy that they touch someone.. but mostly I do blog for mememe.. mostly lol. Very thought provoking look at this blogworld we sometimes call home....

All of the above - sometimes - but I guess I am quite prolific both in posts and in comments and I do appreciate humour/ levity/ whimsy etc. rather than serious debate.

I love it when people read my posts and say something interesting in response.

I'm a hybrid between blog and discuss and blog and visit, I do both about equally.

At February 6, 2007 at 5:04 PM , Anonymous kateykakes said...

Right now I see myself as a combination of a few choices you mentioned. For the most part, I have daily reads and try to leave a comment or two, but sometimes I just don't have much to say.

As of late, I've neglected so many blogs that I read and that's due to some major personal things I've got going on in my life. When things like this happen, I do try to leave a post apologizing and promising to catch up ASAP.

At February 6, 2007 at 5:19 PM , Anonymous Ryan said...

I'm not sure which one I am... probably all the above.

I figure if someone wants to read my blog - that's great. It's sort of filled with useless shit anyhow. If they want to comment, good - if not... that's how it is. I go to LOTS of blogs and never comment - even regular reads. Sometimes I just don't have anything to contribute that's worth a damn.

I try not EVER insult the author - we are all entitled to a point of view.

I like to think I'm a good blogger. I like to answer everyone. But, I'll ignore people that are rude & obnoxious & sometimes tell them to stay away. I'm on vacation now & a little neglectful(acually I wasn't going to blog at all)

Good job of describing the styles.

At February 6, 2007 at 7:35 PM , Anonymous dr.alistair said...

bit of a mix of styles.

i like to post and visit and respond in a sort of flow.

it is good to do the rounds and connect with people of various characters........

though i`m suprised at the amount of visits i get from all over the place and only the same few people comment.

i still wonder about that one single hit from the middle of the pacific ocean.

Hhmm - I am probably a little of all of these. There are a few folks, like yourself, that I always visit and usually leave a comment. Some blogs I read because of interest, but no longer leave a comment because they never leave a comment. (Is that kinda petty?) Then there are those I read but the writers are so bizarre, I just cannot even begin to think of a comment - like Big Dick! He's a freak and I like to visit occasionally but rarely can I get over the post to comment! he he

Good stuff, Hammer. I see several of me in this list of blogger types. The fact is it is tough have your own site and have time to visit all the other blogs you like. I sometimes come up short, but I do try and get a post out 5-6 times a week on my site.

Kirsten: I think you do it the way I do. Very consistant.

Jocelyn: you make a lot of sense. I never wanted to admit it but it's reafirming when people take the time to say Hi how are ya or "you're an asshole" any attention is good attention it seems ;)

Jenny: lurkers I haven't met kind of creep me out. The TSA visted me religiously for a couple months after I criticised their agency. hope they liked the poop jokes ;)

jeannie: sometimes for the life of me I can't think of something intelligent to say. I worry that someone will get their feelings hurt but what can ya do?

Glad to see you back flyinfox!

Cheesy: It's really like that. Does a falling tree make any noise if there is no one there to listen?
That's how I felt about my first three months of blogging.

mutleythedog: I wish I could laugh like mutley.. he is the best. Anyway I'm lighthearted about everything even painful stuff. Life is a big joke lets have fun with it.

Brandon: I see that, you leave good comments that make me reflect on the issue at hand.

kateykakes: I found you off off lawdog and have been following you ever since. Hope all comes together and I thank you for stopping by.

Ryan: you are one of my recent reads I enjoy it. Buried in the mundane is the profound. and that's what I see whan I read your stuff.

Phosgene: I see that: and I need some more recipes dammit ;)

l>t I started reading you early on and tried to model myself after your style. thanks for being a good role model :)

Dr alistair: You are another recent read. I think I found you through BBC. Good stuff. Anyway you can enable feeds so I can see your updates quicker?

Nomas: lol I hear ya. Some people are easy to leave comments for. bigdick is a crazy fuck and instead of commenting all the time I send him shit I'm unwilling to post myself.

MadZ: You have a busy blog. I applaud the way you deal with trolls. I thank you for taking the time to visit and comment on my weirdness.

I'm guilty of a few of these behaviors, but I like to mix 'em up and keep everyone off balance so I don't get predictable. No, really, I don't plan like that, every day is different, whatever I feel like doing goes.

Sorry for the revisit but I was wondering why people have comment moderation-I understand they mght have gotten nasty comments and want to make sure that certain people don't post, but you can always delete those when you see them. It's off-putting to post a comment and be told it will appear after blog moderator approval.

At February 7, 2007 at 7:56 AM , Anonymous Hammer said...

Ordinary Janet: Thanks for visiting, I was fianlly able to get from your profile to your blog.

Yes moderation is a booger becuase you can't see what others have said. Many times my comments disappear and I'm not sure if the blog owner hates what I said, is an asshole, accidentally hit the delete button or what.
