I love cars

Since my father owned a couple of body shops, tool and supply, and a frame and alignment place when I was a kid, I was always around cars. I've been working on them since I was tall enough to reach over the hood. Before that, I would crawl right into the engine compartment and work from there.

I love cars, I like the way they smell, even old rotten musty car odor. One of my favorite things is to do is browse through old junkyards, car shows or a field full of abandoned cars.

I can even do a small amount of archeology by pulling out the back seat of an old beat up car and look at all the stuff that was dropped back there. I've found lots of cash, toys, old receipts, women's undergarments, and anything else that slipped out of a pocket.

Most of my life I've owned old beat up cars. Up until recently I never paid more than $1000 for a car. It gave me a true sense of freedom not having to worry about door dings, car theft, car jacking and especially a monthly car payment. I think I've owned at least 20 cars in the last 20 years

Here are the ones I remember, there were probably more.

1974 Cutlass.. lasted one week got my money back

1974 Dodge Dart sport ..my first real car.

1977 Oldsmobile Delta 88.. The first car I bought on my own and one of the best.

1977 Chevy Nova.. practical and tough as nails

1973 Plymouth Satellite Very cool. I traded $300 worth of clothes for it.

1977 Ford LTD 2 door. Nice car but unreliable and slow

1986 Mercury grand Marquis. Great car. It got 50mpg on the highway at 55mph with cruise control on. I should have never sold it.

1978 Lincoln MK V Paid $300. Loaned it out and it was wrecked by a friend.

1976 Volkswagen beetle. I rebuilt the car only to have the engine blow out..junked it with no money to fix it.

1985 Isuzu pickup long bed. given to me by my father after the VW blew up. The truck had one bad cylinder and would only go 50mph..lots of pissed off people behind me on the way to work.

1994 Mitsubishi mighty max pickup. Indestructible, the first new car I ever owned, 5 people wrecked into me and it still runs. Gave it to my father in law as a gift. He still drives it to this day.

1981 Ford F150 farm truck. I traded a computer for this truck and drove it for a couple of years. Very solid and dependable despite all the terrible abuse it got before me. It was painted white with a latex roller brush. Gave it to my father who still uses it as a ranch truck.

1962 Cadillac Sedan de ville. Bought this beat up wreck for $400 with hopes of restoring it. but I ran out of money and it got towed by the city for being an eyesore.

1992 Nissan Sentra SER. Very cool little car. My wife drove it for 9 years decided to trade it for a safer kid friendly car.

1974 Chevy Impala. I loved this car. Bought it off an old lady for $500. I used it for my door to door computer repair business because nobody would imagine a car that shitty containing $10,000 worth of computer equipment.

1990 Lincoln Town car. Very nice, very comfortable and respectable. I drove it until it had a problem that was costing me too much to keep fixing.

1999 Dodge Durango. My first SUV. Nice vehicle but too many service bulletins... had to trade it when ten things broke at once..

2001 Nissan Maxima 20th anniversary edition. Good car...terrible turning radius not comfortable for someone 6ft 5in.

2002 Ford F150 XLT. Probably the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. It could do anything.

2004 Ford F150 XLT Nicer on the inside than the 2002 but not enough torque. I adopted my kids so I had to trade up to a bigger vehicle.

2004 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. Despite some electrical problems a good solid vehicle That I drive to this day.

1977 Ford Granada. I bought this car when I worked as a bouncer and a DJ in a bar. The drunken asshole clientele would not stop smashing beer bottles on my new truck, so this became the bar car.

2006 Dodge Charger SRT8.

Bought this for my wife for a 15th marriage anniversary present and 20th anniversary on her job present. This car is scary fast, drives and handles like no other car I've ever driven. 3 traffic tickets so far. Gets lots of stares. If I had this car when I was 20 I wouldn't be alive right now. I think this one is a keeper.

I'm slowing down in my old age. The only thing I want now is an old classic car that I can restore with my kids and go cruising. My kids love cars as much as I do. I don't want to deny them the same experiences I had.

You've had more than I have in 39 years of driving. I tend to get vehicles and drive them for several years. I haven't owned a passenger car since 1972, just pickup trucks and my present SUV.
My wife has been driving Jeep Wranglers since 1985.

Dream Car: 1969 Shelby fastback mustang with 428 cubic inch cobrajet engine.

Driving:(or should I say repairing?)1997 Ford Taurus (the one with the Duratech) Have 206921 miles on my baby. No engine trouble but the transmission is being a total bitch. Still trying to decide whether or not she's a keeper. Mechanic says engine is in great shape. (thank you Syntec)Got a lot of miles and if the transmission would get its act together, still could go lots and lots more.
I am a big car fan myself. My husband won't buy me a darn SUV, something about me mistakenly thinking I ALWAYS have right of way if my car is bigger. My question, who's gonna argue that?
Had a 72 olds cutlass ran like a dream and never had to yield right of way to anyone ever. That was in 2000.

That's a ton of cars! I was just looking at pictures from the Chicago Auto Show and realized once again, how much I really don't get into cars...expect the fact that I would give my left nut for a Lexus!

I don't much care about them anymore. And I damn sure wouldn't pay the price of a new one.

Us damn tree huggers, we are just strange that way.

Ok.... I see how you understand that a distributor cap can get moisture in it.

Mystery Solved.

You've had more cars than me, the girlfriend, and girlfriends ex husband will ever own.

that's a lot.

How on earth do you remember what you've owned? I'm really not a car person. I've never had a new car and wouldn't want one. I can't see leaving $50,000+ lying out in a parking lot somewhere. But I have driven many cars. Huggy has been able to buy wholesale for the past 10 years. Generally we drive them for a year or two then sell for more than we paid. this could be a meme if I thought about it but I wouldn't have a clue what years the cars would be.

Hammer...my Dad had a 73 Impala Custom that he would let me drive on dates back in the day...I'd leave the house and pull over down the street and turn the breather cover over for that "sound of power"!

He had teh Delta 88 too...I totaled it out when it was 6 months old.

You had quite a collection!

I'm not sure who that dick guy is, but what a fucking dick!

I hug trees. I do it because I am not a dick.

God I wish I could stand in front of some dicks and have a word...

Anyway, as I was saying...

I had an 84 Nissan 4wd that I squeezed 340,000 miles out of. It actually had more than that, but the odometer was unhooked for about a year before I owned it.

When my g-friend died unexpectedly, I took three weeks and took the entire truck apart, cleaned it, then put it back together.

Loved the hell out of the AMC Concord I drove in highschool. Dad had a '74 or '75 Cordoba. That was a cool car. The '82 Trans-am I drove in grad school was fun as hell. My "91 jeep Cherokee rocked my world for 12 years, 348,000 miles of love. Enjoying my Solara now. Reminds me of the Trans-Am, but I miss the hell outa that Jeep. I'll have another one some day.

The Charger looks like it'd be a great car, they're starting to be used as cop cars, but since I'm around 6'2", that might be a cramped fit to sit in for 10 hours a day.

I've been through three cars so far, one only lasted a week, one I got rid of b/c of mechanical issues, and the car I have now is a '97 Civic with almost 140,000 miles on it. The car's good for at least another 30,000 though and I'd hate to buy another one before I get my student loans paid off.

kirsten: sometimes humble is better.

Bobg: trucks are my favorite, nice looking and useful.

billmaker, that mustang is a sweet ride, got to experience it in 1979.
the taurus and other fords had transmission issues but it's worth it to fix.

mutleythe dog: Old cars are the best, they are like a comfortable pair of pants.

jenny, I'm concerned about your nuts..actutally I drove a 94 lexus once and it rocked my nuts off.

annie: my wife loves the charger. it growls. and fits her personality.

Dick I love hummers too. Just because they are obnoxious, a little too big to park but fuck it.

BBC: I'm sure you still appreciate the asthetics, care are like tits they never go out of style.

Ryan: I never had many girlfriends, I had cars instead.

jeannie: I remember each car like it was a girl, the smell the feel, the love....

Otis oh my god, I turned it upside down too, the 15 HP and the growl were the best!

Scott: You would like dick, he is a dick of proprotions, anyway I am loyal and if a car could take me 340K I would follow it it to the ends of the earth.

fathairybastard: I love cordobas, fucking corinthian leather..it always reminded me of star trek.

Brandon I'm 6'5 and the charger is very comfortable and fast as fuck. you will love it if you get one as your patrol vehicle.

I counted 26 cars in my driving history, but I'm a little older than you. Proportionately, I think we're about even. I'll post a list on one of my blogs...it was a stroll down memory lane I haven't taken in a while. Once again...interesting post!

cars.......

bunch of old tank cadillacs, the best of which was a `69 coupe that i was in love with.

a 1985 maserati biturbo. fucking rocket. scared me that one.

a 1988 madza rx7. another rocket, but nothing compared to the maser....

a 2000 jeep cherokee. my ex has it and my kids are safe in it. especially today where the only cars on the road are 4x4s.

now i have a bicycle.

i may never drive again.

not because i am a, um, tree hugger, but because they are a liability that most people don`t realise is like a millstone around thier neck.

i know people who spend all thier money on thier car and justify it by saying that they need the car for work....

so they are working for an auto maufacturer.

my bicycle is a ten year old khs which was $3500 new and i replace the wheels and chain and rebuild the shocks once year and it`s bullet proof.

and when i have the kids we walk or take a cab.

life is good.

This is a great post. I don't know how to work on cars, but if I did, I would have done the same.

I've always thought it would be cool to be able to fix my own serious car problems.

Those Chargers are sweet. If hers is that red one like you pictured, that's a cop magnet. Cops will stop a sleek red car more often than a sleek white one.

That is a lot of cars, Hammer! I love a Lincoln – all Fords seem to have nice looking bodies. Its too bad they are in dire straights right now. They should follow in VWs footsteps and re-make the Mustang – like the ones of the 60s! I have an 84 BMW that I adore!

The Delta 88 looks like the Speed Queen Family Truckster. Wonder if it comes in Metallic Mint Pea Green? Hee hee.

Hey Hammer- maybe this could evolve into a meme sort of thing. For example, name the car (of those you've owned) that you wish you had back, name the one that you wish you never had, and maybe the car that you'd get if money were no object. What do you think? I'll play along if you do.

Reminds me of being stationed overseas on Okinawa. There were a finite number of cars small and shitty enough for Marines to own, and they all just got passed on to another Marine when you were ready to leave the island.

It wasn't at all uncommon for someone to have a car that cost $50 and a crate of beer...

Kirsten: I think it was a biscayune
funny name really neat car, I got to ride in one once, very roomy.

JP I saw your list, impressive, I had a lot more beaters, I'm slowing down quite a bit these days...

Dr Alistair: I've only seen a few Maserati's really neat styling, and yeah I'm a sucker for giant old Caddilacs, I would give my left one for a 66 Coupe Deville

JAM: Yeah it's red, I got a ticket and the wife has one and a warning.
It'll go 180 say the folks in the owners club but I don't think I have the cajones to try it.

Nomas: The new Mustangs are hot because they brought back the fastback design, I almost got one but a two door doesn't work for us.

Stucco: My 88 was the exact color of the truckster lol Only if it had been a wagon...

Yeah the meme thing sounds like a great idea. I'll get started on mine.

JP: Not enough driveway for all the toys I want hehe.

American cars are cool - love how you guys don't have to have WOFs or COFs (little stickers that say your car is safe!) and you can drive them into the ground...and they're often soooo big!!

I have owned a couple of cool cars - a Morris 1000 (It think it was about a 1962) and a Morris Oxford (This may have been 1958?) Now I own a Mitsubishi Lancer and it's the newest car I've ever owned!

I had few, and the newest was just fetch from a service with a fixed ford window motor.

I'm with you Hammer. I'd rather drive an old car, even if it only lasts a year, than have a car payment. I rented a Dodge Charger last year in California. It is scary fast, and I'm not a motorhead.
