Monday stuff

Since the wife is on vacation I let her sleep in today. Then I took her to Le Madeline for breakfast..it's kind of a faux French thing but the coffee is good.
Right afterwards I took her shopping and we ended up buying some fancy Olive oil and a big magnifying glass and a knife sharpener...real exciting I know.
Then we went to see the Star Trek movie.
All I can say is JJ Abrams could fuck up a county fair. I guess if you like a mix of Armageddon with shitty acting and lots of CGI special effects then it could be ok. I could also tell they had a huge diversity hard on in this film....much more than all of the other series put together. I swear I couldn't tell if it was fucking Star Trek or Madea goes to space camp. Maybe hollyweird was trying to get all of the affirmative action quotas out of the way in one fell swoop. Gays..check, Latinos check, Asians, check, blacks check check check check, cripples? got it covered, boss.
I swear they took all the seriousness, drama and cerebral elements out of the franchise and dumbed it down for an 80 IQ fucknut....Oh lookee space ship go boom!
William Shatner should be glad they didn't let him get within a hundred miles of this film.
I know I shouldn't be hatin.

Hat tip to Deadman:

Now see Hammer? I loved the movie - thought they did a wonderful job!
Hmmmm ...
My oldest kiddo and his girlfriend liked it too - and they don't like everything Star Trek. But they didn't LOVE it. We went out Sat night to see it but were too late - it was sold out
yea, I have to agree with Dana. I thought it was a good movie. Even the original pushed the diversity, white, black, green, asian, and even a russkie. :) And I don't remember any gay reference.
All in all I give it a B+.
Did you see this token she harpy in the movie?
Dana: If I had gone in expecting Independence day, Armageddon or some other blow em up shoot em up in mind I would have liked it a lot better.
Jeannie: I've liked most of what they've put out..I guess the problem is I just read 3 star trek novels and my story expectations are just too high.
dneylon: long time no see! Yeah it was novel when they pushed diversity in the original series first show that had all differnt groups together..this time it looked forced and formulated.
Deadman: LOL oh man that is awesome!!
Thought it was great. All true Trekkies should like it...it brings the original series into an all new light...an alternate reality. That should be appreciated. :-)
Aw, thanks for the shout out, Hammer. I wish I could take credit for creating that pic, but I don't have the talent that you do in that department. I'm just good at ferreting out pics for all occasions...
Are you sure you saw "Star Trek"? I mean, maybe you bought a ticket for "Star Trek" but the ticket dude told you the wrong theater to go into? I'm just not sure you saw the same movie we did.

I'M TRYING NOT TO BE SPOILERY, BUT DON'T READ MY COMMENT IF YOU'RE AFRAID OF EVEN TINY BITS OF INFO!!!

I was really worried that they'd screw this up. I didn't want them adding more "social responsibility" messages than Roddenberry had ever put in himself, and I wasn't sure about casting people who may have never heard of the franchise until "Next Generation" or later. And considering what an abomination some of the other movies out right now are (Yes... I'm looking at you, "Dragonball". And you, "Wolverine".) I wasn't exactly expecting a disaster, but I wasn't going to be shocked if I got one.
I actually ended up thinking it may be one of the best "Star Trek" movies. Chekov seemed to be given a more important role than he ever had before... more than just "Look! We have a Russian... and he's our FRIEND!" The mention of Archer's beagle, combined with the way the end credits came in, helped bring together what has seemed to be a somewhat disjointed continuity from how many series were developed. I hadn't realized just how much I've missed McCoy! And the whole "alternate timeline" thing was there enough to excuse deviations from the canon "Star Trek" mythos, but didn't seem to be used as an excuse to just re-write the whole history. Also, I was surprised to be crying five minutes into the movie. I haven't cried during one of those movies since Spock died. I was glad they explored the whole Vulcan emotions vs Vulcan logic thing more (and that it seems I was right about how it works all these years), and I found it interesting that they actually did show Vulcans being capable of making wrong decisions, prejudice, and hiding behind logic as an excuse for bullying. The Vulcans, as a whole, were finally shown to be more real... like Spock has been all along.
I did have a problem with the green Orion chick. If you know the story, she just doesn't belong there, and I don't see how the explanations for the alternate timeline could have changed that. I did think it was weird to see Tyler Perry there... but hey, there was a black guy sitting in the theater we were at, and there's always been a mix of races in the franchise. Even if it's not as popular among non-whites, it wouldn't make sense for only white people to represent Earth. That whole romance thing, though... that was weird. Just weird because of exactly which two characters it was. And Wynona Rider just isn't old enough to be Amanda. Even if you do make the make-up look good, she's a well-known enough person that the audience knows the actress is nowhere near old enough. Screws up my suspension of disbelief.
I guess I missed the gays. And the cripples, unless you mean the one dude in the wheelchair by the end. However, I think that may have been a nod to the original series. It happens a different way in series, but that one dude IS supposed to end up in a wheelchair, else legions of "Star Trek" fans would probably be referring to Kirk as, "that ensign who used to bring in the coffee until he got replaced by the chick with the basket-weave hair."
Jesus on a pogostick! That was a long comment. Forgive me.
Kim: I was getting really pissed at all the liberties taken with the story line until they explained it with the alternate reality..by then I was already riled up.
Deadman: np it's a riot!
Kelly: I think I walked into the movie with the wrong attitude. I was expecting roddenberry/berman and I ended up with something else.
Maybe I'm getting to be too cranky in my old age.
Sorry folks but Star Trek sucks in my book.
Hmmmm... am I the only one wondering what you're gonna do with that magnifying glass?
That movie wasn't high on my list of must sees. Thanks for the warning.
hammer i never pictured you as a treky.
Ya'll are cranky. I thought it was a good movie :-)
Sorry Hammer, I have to disagree. I also liked it a great deal.
I think maybe you need to go see back to see it again. I'll even send you the 8 bucks. Aside from the fact that the Romulans were not "enemy" looking enough, it was done very well.
As far as Shatner, I missed seeing him, but there was no real way to incorporate him into the story. Besides, he was busy doing Boston Legal. (And don't you dare tell me you don't like *THAT* show, or I will have to quit your blog ;-)
You are so bad.. I come here just to see how you will abuse Michelle lmao...
I too was curious what a cranky old man like you needs with a mag glass... oh ya... you're old and cranky!
I think Star Trek reached its peak with the Next Generation Series. You can't top Captain Picard and Mr Data and you can't get more evil than the Borg.
Forgot to mention the Holodeck. What an awesome concept!
hammer...I've never been a Star Trek fan, so I will have to agree with you; without seeing the movie ;)
~AM
Airman Mom - Go see the movie!
You know I totally disagree with you on this one, right? ;)
Hammer,
I am not surprised. I have not seen the movie but I feel that the Think Tank is empty so I am not surprised by your review....
If we go by history, chances are good that I will end up agreeing with you.
I read then scroll down and it..it's...Michelle! LOL!
I intend to see the movie, but I know to go into it expecting serious differences, so I'll probably enjoy it. I do think the fellow they have playing Kirk resembles a young Shatner fairly well.
And I love La Madeleine. This is a small enough city that the mention of olive oil & a fancy knife gives me a good clue of which one you went to; I hate the parking there. (At the bakery, not the grocery store, though come to think of it I hate it at the store too.) That's my favorite grocery store.
Yep, JJ screwed the pooch. Bigtime. The single redeeming feature was the green bitch. From there it was all downhill.
That Obama Klingon pic is hilarious!!! LMAO!
I agree with you Hammer, as does the husband, a life long Trek fan. Of course all my friends thought it was the shit, but then they all loved whatever that teeny-bopper space movie (the one with the Doogie Howser kid in it) and thought it was epic drama.
I think I need to find a new circle of friends.
Cranky is cool! I loved it, accept the part where they trashed the Vett. The story was weak, major weak, but it was cool to see all the old folks redone. I just love all the CG stuff. I'm a kid like that. Too bad they didn't have a CG T-Rex.
