In the news

I just read that stamps are going up another two cents. Costs 46 cents to mail a damn letter.
For those of you who haven't done it yet, I suggest moving to online banking and bill pay.
All you do is type in your account numbers and addresses of the companies and utilities you pay every month and your bank will confirm the information. Then when a bill is due, you log in, fill in the proper amounts and click "pay". It's so dang easy.

I've probably saved $400 in postage in the last several years not to mention time consuming task of writing checks, buying stamps and taking the stack of bills to a mailbox. Technology is good.

Upcoming coffee shortage...as soon as I get into the stuff, the cost is supposed to skyrocket due to a high demand and a shitty harvest...stock up now while you can. I make a pot per day and a 9 dollar can of folgers lasts me about 2 months. So I figure I'll grab up a years worth today and store it in the back of my closet.

Texting while driving...I saw this dumb broad texting as she was going down the freeway. She was swerving in between three lanes and ended up driving 30 miles per hour in the fast lane. She was furiously tapping away on her phone totally oblivious to the task at hand. I have never before seen such utter stupidity. Come to find out, people are killing themselves and others on the roads because of their texting addiction. This to me is beyond ridiculous. But nothing really surprises me in this country anymore.

I'm wondering when the Post Office will discover that lower prices, and better customer service, usually increase business. Raising your prices and cutting back service usually result in loss of business.

Oh yeah ... this is a government entity, isn't it?

I love technology but I still do the check for bills thing.

Always thought it was pretty amazing that you could send something across the country for what is a relative pittance...It does add up though, as you point out...

I rarely use stamps because I do most everything online, but I did buy a book of 'forever stamps' on Sunday before the price went up. I told the guy at the post office that they'd probably last me a long time because I don't mail things that often and he told me that I needed to mail things for people could have jobs! :-o

People text and drive all the time. Not a smart thing. I did look at my email while sitting at a light the other day, but I put it down as soon as the light turned green. I was paying attention. I'd never text and drive.

I was walking to the car with the children the other day and a 'grandpa' scolded a woman driver who nearly ran him and his grandson over. [she was on the phone] He pointed out that it's now illegal [in Calif] to use a cell phone and she [the driver ] just yelled abuse at him.

We kept walking behind him to our car and couldn't help but over hear him carefully explain to his grandson why the phone was a bad idea [practical rather than focusing on the illegality]

As for the postage, I'm seriously considering investing in come carrier pigeons. This is guaranteed to save me a bundle and if not they should make a very good pie.
Cheers

Where I live I'm in the area of three jurisdictions and so it's mostly "illegal to drive while talking on a cell phone", but the laws don't all apply to texting.

They should. Put the damn phone down and pay attention.

I love the ones trying to make a turn, don't use a turn signal bec. they are too busy -- holding a cell phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other hand that's on the wheel.

And God forbid they check the mirrors!

USPS is dinosaur.

I am so glad I kicked the coffee thing.

If you are caught having an accident while using a device you should have your license suspended for a year.

They still make stamps? Who knew?

Texting while driving should be punishable by death, as it so often results in a death penalty for the other folks on the road.

I'm surprised you still have 1c coins in circulation. In Australia we got rid of them as well as the 2c coins years ago.

I've been paying online for years too. I like that you can readily see past transactions so you know if you've already paid the bill.

Our stamps are up to 54 cents each. Plus tax! They've stopped putting the value on the stamps. But you can buy them cheaper at Costco.

I have never texted anyone. I don't feel anti-technology since my daughter doesn't text either.

It looks like the Port Lavaca Post will be out of business come December. I was talking with the post master and he said they have enough money to pay everyone until the end of the year and then they will more than likely close and they will contract someone to come in and deliver our mail. So much for a price hike.

There's isn't much more that pisses me off than seeing some asshole driving down the highway texting.

I just want to ram their car off the road like you could do in the game "Spy Hunter" from back in the day...

Online banking is the only way to go. Took me forever to convince my mom of that.

I hate it when people drive & text. Everyone thinks they're the one that can't have anything bad happen as a result

Considering the bulk advertising and other junk mail I get (especially come election time), I'm surprised that the USPS is in trouble. Sure, lower volume = less income, but lower volume also = fewer transport runs (air, ground), fewer sorters, larger routes with fewer carriers.

Postage is 44 cents now. You said 46 cents. So save those extra 2c stamps. And a post card is now 28c. Still a bargain, considering their fuel costs. Last year we had that terrible summer, and it appears we are headed back up to near that again. I remember German postage was 1 DM (60c American) back in 1990, when ours was 25c.

There used to be two mails runs a day every day, you used to be able to save on a stamp if you tucked the envelope instead of sealing it, and if you were just sending something across town, you'd address it "Barney Fife, 123 Main, City" that's all. This was as late as the 70's.

It's like commuter train or bus service; if you make it 10x harder than the alternative, why use it? I always liked mail, and nowadays sending someone a letter makes an impact, since you're likely the only one who took the time to write, especially when writing the elected about stuff that you want a say in.

Please folks... As someone who drives a frickin' ambulance...

Put the damn phone down. Really. You're not *that* good of a driver. Or a texter.

Really.

Ok ok let's get this straight kids... Ham it is 44 cents dear one! lol

And you have the lovely oil cartel to thank for most of the rate hike. Every time gas goes up one cent a gallon it costs the PO about a million a day extra in costs. In my city alone there are 300 routes and we all need to use vehicles to get the mail to your neighborhoods. We have not gotten a raise in 2 years and it looks as if we will be turning our COLAS over in order to keep our current contract. That is about a 700-1000$ set back a year for each of us. The government does NOT pay our wages.. we are a PRIVATE company and have been since the 70's. We are only regulated by the big G.. like air traffic controllers. So plaese don't lump us in with big government. Yes there is waste in our company and number one in my book is over management. It would be so refreshing if they would let us continue to give the customer service we have been known for but it's all about faster cheaper get er done in their book. Ok my rant is done.
