Free stuff
There is really no reason to pay for software when there are fully functional trial versions, plus freeware and shareware that can do pretty much anything you want. Try tucows.com or download.com. There are programs such as Gimp 2 that are nearly as good as photoshop and are completely free as well.
There are also tons of free games on pogo.com stungames.com Snood is a fun one that I highly recommend
I like having Internet radio playing in the background as I read blogs here are some good ones:
Pandora.com, music.aol.com or jango.com I like it that they tailor your station to reflect your personal tastes depend on what you search for. Quite often I rediscover songs that I haven't heard in years.

I'm cheap, so I depend on download.com as well. There are two other programs that are substitutes for photoshop that I like. Paint.net is great for pics and it has its own line of effects you can add to it. Another is Photobie. It is good for pics, has hundreds of filters you can find, and has a gif maker as well.
It's great to be a cheapskate.

I downloaded gimp, but couldn't figure it out. Maybe I should try one of Elm's suggestions.

Another good source of free, open-source software is sourceforge.net. The stuff there tends to be more utilitarian than entertaining.
I also check out C-Net for all sorts of free software and like Last FM, which is like Pandora but I like it better.
These are great suggestions. Why pay when you can get if for free !!
The Gimp is teh awesome, but it's not particularly intuitive. There are some good tutorials (Google "gimp tutorial").
I will add something free to this list too. While it's not fun like music or editing software, it is useful and really free.

With all the interest in photo editing, how about some public domain pics to go along?
Also, I find Slacker to be a better alternative to Pandora - more flexible, fewer restrictions, and better "channel" personalization.
