Common or uncommon sense.

Kelly was writing about common sense with this post.

This sentence got me to thinking:

"That's what I think is happening to common sense. It's dying out because not enough people are having the kind of life experience that makes it common in the first place."

It does seem that fewer people have common sense these days.

Where does common sense come from and where is it going?

The first type of common sense is genetic. I think they used to call it horse sense. An innate form of intelligence and ability to put a sequence of events together before they happen and make the appropriate decision based on limited information.

Example: You are loading your car about to go on a road trip and you see a weird bump on the side of your tire. You know nothing about tires but you take it to the local gas station to get it checked before you get out on the road a hundred miles from the nearest tire store.

That is common sense...and it's rarer than hens teeth. I know most of the folks that read and comment on this blog have at least some of this virtue or you wouldn't have come back after the first visit.

The next type of common sense is what I call: life experience with extrapolation.

Example: Walter is a lazy fuck who procrastinates and doesn't pay his electric bill. Then when the warning letters arrive he doesn't take them seriously and decides he has plenty of time to procrastinate some more. Walter is surprised when he wakes up late for work because his power has been shut off and has to jump through a bunch of flaming hoops and miss more work to get his service reconnected.

All of the sudden, a light bulb goes on above Walters head and he realizes that paying the electric bill is not optional and eventually bad annoying things will happen if you neglect this duty.

The extrapolation part is when Walter looks over at his desk and sees all the other bills he's been neglecting and decides to take care of them too so they don't shut off his phone, cable and Internet.

I bet if you've read up to this point, you are saying to yourself.."well no shit Hammer nobody could be that dumb."

Au contraire. I've met many many people that fall into the next category.

This type I call...you were born without the part of your brain that allows you to learn lessons.

Example: (true story) Maria likes to go out and party after work. Alcohol affects her more than most people and she always ends up stumbling and yelling and making an ass out of herself after two drinks. She insists on driving even though she can't walk, talk or find her car.

Needless to say, she is arrested for drunk driving. Her family posts bail..and that same night she borrows her husband's car and goes drinking, gets falling down stupid drunk and once again gets arrested.

The judge feels sorry for her..she is college educated, articulate, very attractive, has two young children, a good job and a family that will vouch for her. He puts her on probation, gives a verbal warning and approves a provisional drivers license that allows her to go to work.

That night. She goes out and repeats the same behavior and is arrested once again. Her husband begs her to go into an alcohol program and the judge mandates that she stay out of bars and go to Alcoholics Anonymous.

Alcohol is not the problem. If it were booze she could get wasted on the couch in front of the TV no problem...the problem is Maria has a brain not unlike a broken record. This behavior could manifest itself with abusive men, shopping debt, gambling, embezzling etc...

Just so you know, Maria was arrested 18 times in two years for the exact same thing. The judge got tired of it and sentenced her to 4 years in prison. she lost her family, job, home, everything.

Guess what she did the night she got out of prison?

I guess to sum it all up..some people are born with sense, some have to learn from mistakes and some will never ever have a clue even if you beat them over the head with a clue bat.

Personally, I think the loss of common sense is directly related to the increase in silly legislation. Don't want to wear a seatbelt? Not a problem! It's one less person without common sense we'll all have to deal with!

I reckon there are some that just don't have the native intelligence to obtain common sense...and then there are some such as the example you cite, the drunk. I figure contrary to what the AA and many others would have you believe that alcoholism is not a disease but a behavior problem and a symptom of some much deeper mental problems..problems in the mind that the individual cannot deal with without the numbing of alcohol. And until that person is able to face and deal with whatever it is that is there that person may never overcome booze..

Of all the things I could teach my daughters, common sense is on top of the list. The stove is hot, don't touch it. The car is empty, fill it up. Your boyfriend is trying to get you drunk, kick him in the balls. You know the routine...

Common Sense went Bye Bye a long time ago. Its a shame really.

My favorite common sense reminder is the sign on the inside of the windshield screen.
"Please remove before driving your car" Seriously.

My idea is to stop treating people like they have no brain and just maybe they will start acting like they do.

Our cars have idiot lights on them to remind them that their gas is about gone. Go fill it up. Yet they still run out of gas all the time.

I have a ton of common sense. My youngest son has none. He's clueless but harmless in his lack there of. It's just funny. Oh and he won't run out of gas. He just forgets how to get to places and misses the turns all the time. I say he gets lost going around the block. Which he does. He's a genius. They have none. Just a lot of brains.

I hope all is well in your corner of the world. I'm getting wet down here in South Florida. So I'll stay off the road and stay inside. I have common sense.

Hammer,
Kelly had a great post.

I liked how you described the three different kinds of common snese - or lack of it.

And as for the last 3 , yes it could manifest it in any area.

Addicts refuse to look for solutions - which is the the antitheseis of gaining/demonstrating common sense. No price is too high for them to pay in pursuit of their numbing out/fix.

Well I for one would love to hear your version of 'au contraire."

You know I'm having a very hard time believing the last one. Is a 'clue bat' a very rare breed?

Cheers

I think I once heard stupidity defined as doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome.

I meant to add - the left side of your post is cut off by about half a letter in IE. It's fine on firefox.

I think the idea of geniuses having no common sense (as beachgirl mentioned) goes back to not having a common experience in life to draw on. Instead of it being a selfishly detached thing, it's just that geniuses percieve reality in such a different way. I know a man who is a literal rocket scientist with no common sense. (They have more technical terms for it, but he was some type of "rocket scientist" for years with NASA.) He can become so fascinated by talking to someone in a parking lot about an odd bumper sticker on their car that he becomes unaware of the passage of time. That means he's also unaware that the gallon of milk he just bought is warming up and going bad as he stands there.

Lack of common sense is becoming more predominant. A lot of the younger people I work with are college educated, book smart, but have no common sense whatsover. They show up to work hungover (or still drunk or high on something) and think no one notices. And then they don't get it when they get passed over for promotions.

I work with a guy like Maria~~ Finally it caught up with him and he did a little time and had to do walking routes for a year. Only has use of his car to get to and from work and has to blow in a tube to get the damned thing to start. Hard part is he is such a nice guy.... just not too bright in the land of booze. I think TV numbs alot of the common sense right out of our kids. They don't use their brains for creative things enough... IMO~~ People send your kids OUTSIDE to play and learn!

I've noticed, too--I had a customer today who wanted a scope mounted, but his Henry wasn't drilled and tapped. After about 4 explanations why he couldn't mount a scope, he thought he might buy the scope off the Henry website.
I don't think he ever understood that he'd have no way to mount it. Then he'll bring it in and demand we mount it. I can just feel it.

Part of the problem these days is everything is someone elses fault.
Your not fat because you eat too much and dont excercise , its the governments fault for not taking your fattness seriously , or the food companies for making the food etc etc.....I gues its easier to blame everyone else rather than address you own behaviour unless your forced (as in most of the cases you stated) I too know a few Maria's

I think this all has to do with imbreeding. *snort*

I have a..er.... "friend" like this. Dates the same types of loser men and let's them live with her after a week. One steals her rent money and leaves. Another comes home drunk every night, cheats on her, steals her cell phone. And yet she continues this behavior.

Well, I think Maria's problem is more than lack of common sense. She has some sort of mental/emotional problems or something.

However, I see your point. I think that in today's world people are not forced to be responsible or act with common sense. Our society makes getting out of trouble too easy.

would 'life experience with extrapolation' be a good reason to NOT vote for McBush???

I think that Common Sense and Creativity go hand in hand. We have lost the imagination boys and girls. Millions of Dollars worth of Sets and Sound Studios are doing that these days...I mean c'mon, when was the last time you saw a bunch of kids playing together with Barbies and GI Joes....Our youth are being programmed not to think....Common Sense hurts too much!

Some people are living proof that feces can walk and talk. The problem I have with people like Maria isn't that she had a DUI (or 18 of them!) but that she couldn't go beyond the immediate gratification of the booze to see the consequences.

I have an ex-friend who serially cheated on her husband, and despite numerous warnings from me, has lost her family. 6 kids, aged 2--17!! Can you imagine? And all I kept telling her was, you're making active choices here--you CAN choose to do the right thing, and quit whoring around. But she didn't. What a mess.

Great blog, btw. Loving Annie recommended it to me and I can see why.

You speak the truth again. I think in the old days folks got to watch people live in rags and die because they were stupid and fucked up. Other people learned form the example. Your parents said "See what happens", and you learned. Now people learn how to get free shit from the gubment and avoid the consequences of life. It's evolution. We've evolved into a society of winers ever since the New Deal started to take the consequences of bad decisions away.
