Blogging tips and tricks updated

I've been doing this blog thing for a couple of years now. I don't talk about it or even mention it when I'm offline. When cornered, I just say that I talk to people through the Internet and we share stories and recipes and stuff. Part of the reason is, I don't want to have to explain to people why I do it and the other reason is I don't want them reading my shit. Plus, recent commercials are now invoking blogging like it's some pop culture thing and they make it sound really gay.

Right now, I read or try to read about 120 blogs and I add or delete about 2 a week. I enjoy the interaction because honestly I don't get out much anymore. With taking care of the kids, trying to save money and the price of gas, blogging is now my window on the world and a way to meet friends.

I do consider many of you guys friends.

I would like to share some of the things I've learned about being a blogger and running a blog.

There are no hard and fast rules but if you want to increase readership or get your message across, there are a few things you should and should not do. I've learned these from experience.

1. Make sure your screen name links back to your blog. If you are commenting and someone likes what you have to say, make sure they can find your blog with a simple click. I cannot tell you how many times I've searched through a list of blogs that haven't been updated in 3 years to try to find the right one...some folks don't even link their name to their blog and then get all huffy when I don't visit.

2. Enable feeds in your blog settings. Most folks who read a number of blogs have a feed reader. It tells me when you have a new post for me to read. It's really hard to keep track of bookmarked blogs and checking them constantly for new content is hard work. When you don't have feeds enabled it really cuts down on your readership.

3. If you start a blog, the only way to get new readers is to visit blogs that fall into your realm of interest, make good thoughtful comments and be patient. Don't go into someone's blog and link your own blog in the comments unless you have a post that fits in with the topic at hand..even then it's not always good manners.

4. Recognize that there are some bloggers out there that do not comment. If you like the blog, just read, comment and don't expect them to ever acknowledge your existence. Don't get your panties in a twist over it. That's just how some motherfuckers roll.

5. Try to link blogs and posts you find funny and interesting in your own blog posts. People like to be acknowledged. They also appreciate the sentiment and free advertising and may return the favor.

6. Don't get into a pissing match with other blogs. If you disagree with something they wrote, state your reasons politely in the comments and leave it at that. The worst thing you can do is post something that trashes another blogger. You will alienate too many people and get a reputation as an asshole.

7. Don't be afraid to speak your mind. You may step on a few toes but people would much rather read a strong definite opinion than read about puppy foo foo for the umpteenth time because you are too concerned about hurting people's feelings.

8. If you want to place ads on your blog fine...but do not have pop up windows, adverts that change you to a different screen and other annoying bullshit. It just makes reading that particular blog more trouble than it is worth.

9. Begging for money...now this is where it gets tricky. If you want a tasteful little box up in the corner for donations..that's fine...some folks need money for bandwidth, some need it to buy substances that make them more creative and some are just grubbers. Don't be a grubber.

I'll tell you what...as soon as someone puts the tag: "gimme two dollah for a cuppa" on each blog post. I hit the delete button. What the fuck is a cuppa? Why would I want to give you money for one and oh yeah... how about a big hot steaming cuppa shut the fuck up.

10. Don't take yourself too seriously. It's just a blog for crissakes.

GuyK: brought up a really good point : "Another is that many people will not wait for a cluttered site to download. Sites that take more than a few seconds to show on my screen I just click off."

This means tons of HTML, music, large pictures, animations and I don't recommend showing more than a week of posts on one page.

Good sound advice (as always) Hammer!

Thanks for being a voice of sanity.

Or perhaps you're insane.

And I'm insane.

So I just think insane is sane.

Makes no different. You still rock!

You might have noticed a lot of new widgets on my blog. I'll get back to you as to which ones are useful and which aren't. I find Live traffic feed by Feedjit useful to know which posts are attracting the most readers because you know that most don't bother to leave comments. Tha star ratings system is useful as long as people bother to rate your posts.
I've just installed Zemanta which appears to be a very nifty aide in putting a blog together with auto links and pictures you can choose to add or not.The Scoutle widget is still a mystery as to how useful it really is.

Here is another thing I find very important: Respond to comments readers put on your blog!

Well now that I've been hanging out in blogland for about a year I've learned alot, but obviously still have far to go. I have to figure out if I have 'enabled feeds'???
Because I have a couple blogs....one I ramble on about nothing in particular, one is an old page of project playlist songs that hardly work, and a jewelry page for biz stuff, I have to remember to sign "Mary Says..." when I leave new people a comment because I've often wondered why a few never stopped back when I was nice and kind and really digging their page. They probably didn't know which blog to even click on and then opened a page, got a face full of crystal jewelry and figured since my comment name is 'crystal chick' they just moved on cause it wasn't their thing.

All good info!!
Thanks!

You blog for the same reasons I do! Blogland is the only place I can have an intelligent conversation with people other than my family.

My good blogfriends, like you, have boosted my morale many times. Thanks!

good things to remember for non-rookies too...

I never thought about a donation button...hmmm....

Tell you what! I'll help you if you help me!

I believe a 'cuppa' would be a reference to a 'cup of tea' and a soft colloquialism from a teeny tiny little island.

Now, what pray tell, is 'a grubber' and what does 'puppy foo foo' mean?
Cheers

Alaina: if everyone else is sane then I guess I'm the opposite ;)

Lexcen: thank you, blogger needs to fix my dashboard before I can add anything but I will try those out.

crystalchick: Yep! glad I could help.:)

chris: good point!

E.L.L I'll go take a look.

crystalchick: lol

flyinfox: thanks!

tshsmom: I agree it does boost the morale.

katherine: lol @ donation buttons

maddy: thank you for the definition. Puppy foo foo is a reference to the countless posts that are just pictures of the same dog on different days. A grubber is someone who unabashedly begs for money with little thought to how it makes them appear.

Blogs asking for money...now that's sad. BTW, the way you write, YOU should be getting $.

Good advice. Should have added that if you want readership, have well written and/or well illustrated posts - show some talent or at the very least have a focus, angle or have something to say.
Otherwise, be like me. Post whatever the heck you want and remain content that 5 people come and see you occasionally.

I agree with most of what you said, Hammer.

To me, blogging is about creating cyber-friendships.

It is also a micro-picture of who the blogger really is, how they think, feel and behave - a slice of what they are like in the real world as well.

I don;t know how to explain to people who don't have full feeds how to do them.

I think it is one of bloggers new widgets, and quite helpful; as is the new link list that shows when everyone is updated.

Blog visiting and commenting, like telephone calls between friends, is a two way street. There are givers/thoughtful people - and there are takers/selfish people. It shows up pretty quickly.

You've been there since the first for me. Thank you :)

jeannie: You're a good read. I like it that you don't hold back when somethings bugging you.

annie: definitely a two way street. It's sometimes sad when people forget that. Thanks for being a longtime reader and friend.

Amen to #9 lol
I like to blog to get the toxins out sometimes. It is very theraputic. Also as you know I love to take pictures and cook and its a way to share both! Plus living in bum-fvck nowhere it helps me keep in touch with the semi-real world hehehe...
As for the feeds, I notice many times those who subscribe seem to land on posts that are old. I Have a blog feed list also but there again...many times it takes me to a post that is a few days old. Haven't figured why yet....

Dude, Great post. Thanks for reminding us that common courtesy is important even in cyberspace.

Begging (donations) on a site is like having teenagers. "Can I have some money? I need some money."

Good advise..I have been at it for a little over three years. I would suggest a couple of additions to your advise...one is that if you want people to come by every day you gotta post something every day. I have many on my blog roll that don't have the feed and I only visit about once a week to see if they have posted.

Another is that many people will not wait for a cluttered site to download. Sites that take more than a few seconds to show on my screen I just click off. I hope mine is not one that is so cluttered it takes it a while to download..if so I hope people let me know and I'll take some of the junk off..hell I have too much now.

The begging for money thing is a big part of why I started doing stuff on Zazzle. Um... not so I could beg for money... the opposite, really. I know some bloggers put enough time and effort into blogging about current events/news/etc that they really could be doing something else with that time, and I don't fault those folks one bit for putting a tip jar up. Especially if all it does is just sit there as an option, and the author isn't demanding or begging for donations. But me? I don't feel like my blog provides something that makes it worthy of a tip jar. And I do like making graphics. So I figured I could do something with the graphics and put the ad for it in my sidebar. That way, I'm not begging for money. I'm putting it out there that people can buy something with my work on it. And it means I do blog about my designs sometimes because people ask me how it's going, and I'm not going to take the "if you don't buy anything, you must not really care" attitude toward it. And sometimes, I just need some input on ideas. If I ever start making, "And buy something from my gallery!" part of every post, I want someone to come slap me around until I get my sense of decency and respect for others back.

Hammer-

Great advice- thanks for the tips. Jeannie- I agree, if I were waiting for a readership I'd be long gone. I always appreciate the few, the proud, the brave!

I do wish I had more time to visit other blogs and comment, but time is at a premium right now with work and two online classes- the amount and volume of "Homework" is amazing. I'm not complaining at all- I took it on. It's just time consuming and hard to get to all the blogs I used to.

Hammer- you have been as consistent a blogger, and an example set for us all. If we just patterned ourselves after your style we'd have it made. You have always been their and are sorely missed when you go on vacation..

I truly consider you a friend even though we've never met. I would be more apt to fly to meet you should you have an emergency than several of my own family members and college friends! And yes, I do have a life outside blogging. I just happen to choose to Blog. I really enjoy it! It's educational, funny as hell, virtually free and you can do it nekkid! Hell, what more could a man ask for?

Thanks Buddy, as always,

John

Cheesy: some feed readers are slow in updating so they will show the last post. Sometimes they just need a manual refresh to get them going again.

Jerry: glad to help whenever I can.

mike: Yeah my kids spam me for money all the time :)

marmite: thanks. blobing for money only works for people with naked stuff on their blob ;)

Kitem: Thanks. I'll be glad to help

terri: It's tough getting started that's for sure.

guyk: excellent advice. I added it to my original post.

kelly: you are definitely a pioneer offering something of value for money. We don't see that in the blog world much anymore :)

I'll be sure to check out your stuff.

Phosgene: hooters are a must and you've got cool grandkids and awesome dogs so that keeps us coming back.

airmanmom: thanks for visiting! Blogging is almost like real life and so mnay folks seem to forget that.

John: I'm proud to call you a friend and I appreciate you taking the time to comment here with your inventive and hilarious quips and double entendres.

Good post, Hammer. I'm guilty of several things you mentioned -long, rambling blog posts for one thing, being a partial lurker (sometimes I comment, sometimes I just have nothing to say or agree so completely too that there's nothing left to say.)
The reader thing though -wish you could explain to me how to get mine working properly!!! It's become a royal pain in the dupa for me over the last two weeks although it does help immensely with reading others blogs. Just wish it would update my own blog in a reasonable time frame, etc.
