Discussions with American socialists

Lately, with the oil crisis, housing crisis, high costs of health care and the War in Iraq. I've had the unique opportunity to talk to some folks with definite opinions on what to do about the American economy.

I listen politely but find myself bothered by the simplistic solutions and short sighted notions hurled at me by people angry at our current system.

Big oil is too rich and greedy. We need to regulate gas prices and have our government take over the big oil corporations.

First of all market speculators are causing the prices of oil commodities to rise. Oil is being traded like pokemon cards. There is no shortage but the traders are sure that the stuff is worth more than it's intrinsic value.

Price controls...Americans have short memories. Price controls always bring about shortages. Remember the gas lines of the 1970's? It's economics 101. Even communists who control every aspect of a product can't stop shortages. Venezuela installed price controls on sugar, meat and rice. Now there are none to be found. I think people would rather pay more for a product than have it disappear completely.

Nationalizing oil companies? Who here thinks the government can run something honestly and efficiently without completely screwing things up with their ridiculous bureaucracy? Look at Mr Chavez down in Venezuela. He took over the oil, can't manage it, distribute it, or keep the wells flowing. It's par for the course.

Tax the rich....It sounds good. Right? Who is rich? Actually the rich pay the majority of tax revenues in this country. $349K per year and above pay 35% of their income. Should we soak them some more? The wealthy reinvest in our economy, they create jobs with their investment and spending. What does the government do with your tax money?

I'll tell you.

Every dime collected from American paychecks is used to pay the interest on the national debt. Basically, folks work 1/3 of the year and the money is used to make a red mark in the ledger. The money printed has to be backed up with something so they steal from you and literally burn your wages to prop up the fallacy of the American Dollar. Chew on that for bit.

Free health care for all..I hear this one a lot. Let the government manage health care. Talk to any veteran and ask them about the VA hospitals. That is a taste of what socialized medicine is like. When profit is taken away from the field of medicine there is no incentive for research, specialization and competition. Eventually, people are waiting months for life saving procedures. Our current system isn't perfect but if you need life saving surgery, you will get it 10 times faster than someone in Canada or England. You will get it in a private room and you will be a customer instead of a ward of the state.

Lets bail out all the people who are losing their homes. Look at the people who stupidly took out a half million dollar variable rate note and bring home a $30K income. Come on, if people don't ever have to take the hit for a stupid decision how are they ever going to learn? It is not the tax payers duty to pay for people's houses that live in flood zones or get themselves in a ridiculous debt situation.

It's these emotional knee jerk reactions to economic bumps in the road that will eventually send us over the edge.

I have been told I have a gift for seeing the future. That is why I bought a 2003 Civic Hybrid. I saw this coming.

In regards to Energy, I feel we should tax the shit out of oil and gas. I then feel we should give Tax Breaks to the companies that develop in-expensive Alternative fuel sources.

Everything else is Dead on Hammer!

I agree with you, except I don't think the goverment should control the oil/gas, but I think there should be laws on how much the oil companies can raise prices and fuck us up the ass.

terri: Maybe 2012 I'll be ready ;)

flyinfox: the oil companies are paying in billions of taxes on their profits and gas is taxed 40 cents a gallon any additional taxes would be placed on the backs of consumers. However tax breaks and cash prizes for alternatives is excellent way to encourage innovation.

Burfica: Nixon tried that with natural gas and instead of conserving due to natural market forces there were shortages and some people even froze to death.

You ought to be running for President - I wish the way you think would be carried out, it's logical. What's going on now is just a slide into self-destruction for the U.S.

We're being totally screwed over with the whole bogus oil shortage thing. It must be fun to be one of the "illuminati" that have so much money they can mess with everyone else's life. Global warming is another bogus enterprise (athough I totally agree with cleaning up the planet anyway)
Bailing people out for nothing does no one any good in the long run.
Frankly, unions have to bow out except as a small watchdog ombudsman. They have inflated the value of labour. Business can not properly compete in the market when it has to pay a lot more for labour than the other guy. Having to pay more for labour means that less can be spent researching new technologies making the company fall behind even more. Next thing you have thousands unemployed altogether because the company is in the hole when if the union had understood that profit is essential for a company and allowed wages to be fair to both employer and employee everything might have worked out.

Also people have to learn to be less dependent upon big companies and the government for earning a living. Be more entreprenurial. If we're at the start of a new Great Depression, the entire continent is screwed because most of us don't even know how to plant a garden or do up preserves to feed ourselves.

All of these problems go back to the same root cause: the dollar is worthless. It's only money because the government says it's money. It's actually just a worthless piece of paper. The Federal Reserve is the biggest scam ever perpetrated, period.

Gas still costs the same as it did 30 years ago, in terms of silver or gold. It only costs more now because the currency we use is worth nothing.

I guess you don't know about the looming future situation regarding Peak Oil.

I think you have all ready gone over the edge, just you all just don't know you're falling.

I think we should eliminate income tax altogether, and institute a 1%-5% sales tax on all goods and services. This would be a more equitable system; he who consumes the most, pays the most taxes.

Totally agree about bailing out foreclosures. I'm also sick of bailing out the airlines, insurance companies, and corporate farmers!

The left is very powerful right now, and the populist message is particularly influential to the masses during a time of recession. The left will only f-ck things up even worse when they take power, and then the conservatives will sweep back again.

The cycle of politics in America.

Except for that last one about bailing out folks who are losing their homes, you've just described national Canadian policy.

Well, as usual, I don't agree with a few things (which is probably why my blog is so disagreeable to people, he he). Anyway, I think the Bush administration and the OPEC asshole are working together to steal this election too. They want to piss people off so much about this offshore drilling that they are almost in a frenzy by the time they get to the voting booth and can't wait to elect McCain. It's a brilliant move indeed. Personally I don't give a shit about gas prices, but that's beside the point. You know, the oil companies aren't even using 70% of the area that they already own. They just want the easy stuff off of the continental shelf where having an oil rig would not only be an eyesore, but an environmental black mark. They got a few off of Huntington Beach over here. It's not pleasant to look at, but I guess you just learn to get used to it after awhile. I'll have to agree with you on the price controls and nationalizing bullshit. Nothing wrong with good old capitalism. As far as taxing the rich goes. I'm not feeling too sorry for them because the flip side is that 5% of the population makes 90% of the money in this world. So, yeah the rich do pay most of the taxes because they make all the damn money in the first place. It's because of their stealthy ways of avoiding their fair shares that our infrastructures and school systems are falling apart. Plus we go and exploit all these other 3rd world countries to where their government and social systems can't function properly anymore. Then they all move to the good ole USA, Canada or mutha f-ing Sweden. I hear Finland is just awesome this time of year.
On the issues of health care and home prices I have just one word...broken. Our system is broken because people want too much for their shit and median incomes for the average Joe have remained stagnant for the last 8 years. Gee, I wonder why. With so many Dicks and Bush's and Colons in the world....
