Spring break on hold updated

Bad weather has put spring break plans on hold so I thought I'd do this post that I've put off for a while.

I started collecting guns in earnest around 1999. I didn't have a plan, I just bought what caught my eye. Pawn shops, and a curio and relics license helped me get started on a collection of military rifles. I shoot everything I own except the carcano, which is just a wall hanger as it is not safe to fire.

A couple of these guns have gone to war. When I refurbished the SKS I found a bullet hole in the stock. The Mauser K98 was a battle field capture, the M1 Carbine has all matching numbers so was probably a war souvenir, and the SMLE has lots of battle scars and initials carved into the stock. I wish I could hear the stories these guns have to tell.

I would love to have that M1. My grandfather had one (from the war), and that was the very first rifle (not counting a .22) I ever shot.

That is quite a collection. I'm only a little jealous.

I clicked to read about the first one, then realised I'm not tooooo interested in the history, but I did enlarge the picture and man, they are really quite beautiful things! Especially the M1 Carbine and the Chinese SKS....dunno whether it's the extra 'bits' or what?

I think I'm gaining some respect for them or something....??

Hope the weather improves!

I'd trade my gun in a minute for world peace. But the fucking monkeys have bombs. What good are guns anymore?

I've got an SKS. Sort of a poor mans AK-47. I used it for deer hunting, though the caliber is a bit on the small side for big game, but I was able to punch holes in 3/4" boiler plate with it from 50 yards. The most disconcerting thing is that it ejects the shell out towards the front of the gun. It takes a while to get used to the spent cartridges flying out in front of you.

My SKS is that. MINE!!! hehehee We have a Checoslovakian (spelling) paratrooper sks. I love that gun. We have an M1 Garand also.

along with 4 .22's
2 Springfield 1903 A3's
Winchester Model 21 16 gauge double barrel
410, 12, and 20 gauge single shot
mini 14
Winchester 30-06
Winchester 243
1871 to 1971 Nra commemorative Winchester 30/30 never been shot, not even a round chambered.
54 caliber black powder muzzle loader.
357 Smith and Wesson
Bolt action Savage 30/30

that's about all we have that I can think of. My dad probably has triple that amount. hehehe

And yes, we all shoot every one of those but the commemorative.

That was cool to see what you had.

Ryan: I was getting ready to go through CMP for a Garand when I found mine at the pawnshop. It's a
fun and easy gun to shoot.

KB: the history is dry. thats why I didn't write it myself. Goodd choices on the favorites..those are indeed fun.

Tkkerouac: I've read the horror stories! Ouch.

BBC: I'm more interested in history asthetics and recreation. But Maybe if I'm lucky I can take out a suicide bomber from a couple hundred yeards away :)

Phosgene: the sks is about the same
power as a 30-30 but I was indeed surprised when mine pierced a steel constuction beam..must be that steel core ammo.

Burfica: nice collection! I only displayed my military rifles. Maybe I should do a monthly theme and do pictures of the rest..

I had a few M1 Carbines back in the day. They were cheap to buy and shoot. We were real smart guys. We used to go shooting at an old firetower where we'd set our targets against a concrete foundation. Those old 30 caliber slugs would bounce off that concrete right back to me where I actually caught a few bare handed. The ones that hit me were like someone threw a stone at me. The concrete must have absorbed most of the power and only left enough to return them to the sender...It was fun shooting back then...

m: lol shanks :)

jp: I remember getting hit with a few ricochets, one of them went down my shirt and burned the crap out if me. I also learned not to shoot old steel rims...

Late comment but you know the old adage....
Hubby has been "playing" with these folks: http://www.texastactical.net/
They evidently have skill testings such as firing so many shots around a corner at something/one or the other - he loves it. Thought you might be interested.

Nice selection for rifles collected without a plan. Surprizingly good, in fact.

Nomas: Back in 2003 I went and tried out with those guys. Real nice folks, I was just too damn nervous to shoot in front of people.

Fodder: thanks. I'll post the the military pistols next.
