Has it been 20 years?

I discovered this old photo in with my old report cards and memorabila stuff that I didn't know I had.
Thats me on the driver side and my best friend at the other side. You may recall I've mentioned him a few times.
My dad bought this car right before we moved to Texas. Someone owed him some money so he took the car as payment. It sat in the driveway for years but I kept it in running order in the extreme unlikely event that I would be able to drive it when I turned 16. If I remember correctly this pic was taken sometime around January '86.
With the little gas money I could scrounge up, we would cruise around and look at stuff. We weren't able to afford anything except a dollars worth of gas here and there but the sense of freedom was good enough.
For all you non car junkies out there the car in the picture is a 1974 Dodge Dart Sport.
It had been wrecked and put back together before my dad got it and they forgot to put a seal on the firewall. Everytime it rained or I drove through a car wash, gallons of water would pour all over the feet of the front passenger. This defect also gave the car a mildew smell.
I never had to worry about anyone stealing this car because I was the only one who knew how to drive it. The operator of this vehicle had to stand outside to start the car because any pressure on the drivers seat would disable the starter unless the seatbelts were fastened.
The seatbelts were broken, as well as the radio, speedometer, air conditioner, etc...
But the car was mine and I was grateful to have it.
I was not allowed to drive to school even though I had a license, insurance and parking permit. I was forced to ride the school bus and explain to my friends why I wasn't driving them to school in my car. Pretty soon I realized that my mom left before me and got home after I did so I could drive with her being none the wiser. Yeah right! Someone who worked with my mom saw me and happened to mention it to her. Don't kids always get caught that way?
I miss the freedom of driving old junkers. Nobody wants to park next to you, people don't road rage on you because they know you have nothing to lose except some faded paint and a chunk of bondo. It's also great being able to fix your own car on the side of the road with duct tape and a coat hanger.
I missed the old Dodge after it went to the great used car lot in the sky. If there is any justice in the world my car went on to donate parts to it's brethren then was melted down and reincarnated into a Caddilac or something.

It is these memories we have to cherish
I should probably getting around to getting my licence... Hmm
Hey, I can barely name cars without seeing the logo and I knew that was a Dodge Dart! I never drove one but they looked so cool.
I wonder if anyone will be filled with nostalgia for their minivan in 20 years?
Did the Dart have pushbuttons for the gears? I know I drove around in one at some point with one or another of my friends but just can't place which one.
That Dart made my old Cortina sound like a luxury vehicle. It probably wasn't even all that old but then I never paid much attention. No idea what year I'm driving now in fact. But then I have to think long and hard to remember what years my kids were born. Pathetic huh?
Sounds like a Bridport taxi...
Ah, Hammer, you do love your cars !!!
And being a female, what caught my eye (of course) was how much space there was between the houses ! Wouldn't that be heaven to have a big yard like that !
Prince Charles would probably prefer everyone to eat organically grown food, hence the McDonald's remark...
And I agree, as a figurehead he can't do much damage. I don't think he means any harm...
Hope you have a good Monday !
My first vehicle was one of those very very old Dodge forest ranger trucks. No power stearing no power brakes. The gas peddle was just an iron bar, that would occasionly get stuck down in a hole in the floor, and you had to kick it to get it to come out.
You also had to undo the air filter thing and put a pipe in it to hold the butterfly open to get it to start. All the boys thought i was cool...I was the only girl with an old clunker that could actually figure out how to open the hood, let alone get the piece of junk started.
You know what I got from this post/pic?
Holy crap you're old. ;)
Steve~
No hub caps??? The hub cap king with no hub caps?
I have never owned but one or two cars that cost me over a few hundred dollars.
My present truck doesn't count because I just stumbled into a good deal on it by working for it for a week.
Even at that, it's not worth a lot, maybe 35 hundred.
This post reminded me of the bumper sticker..
"Don't laugh.. it's paid for"
RE: the getting cuaght. My oldest son got caught twice big time that way. Once for Joy riding his Dad's motorcycle, and once when he got suspended lol... Karma was sweet!
Don't you just love old photos? They just take you back.
Aaah, I can't wait until I can drive (not long now!).
I love lokking at photos from the past. They always remind me of something that I have long forgotten, and I love that feeling of remembering something or somewhere that I don't always remember.
Helen
Kirsten: I loved driving so much then, I've come to hate it now. It's nice to look back though.
choo choo It gives some freedom but also takes it away especially monetarily ;)
janet: I'm sure they will, I've already talked to some that love theirs so much that they named them.
Jeannie: The push buttons were about 10 years before mine, I always remmebr the years of my cars from having to go buy parts for them :)
mutleythedog: Maybe the old dart was exported and not melted down afterall! I've got a spare key for the glove box if you need it.
Annie: I was glad for the house spacing but having to mow and rake that thing was torture :) You might be interested in the scrapes Charles' father Phillip has gotten into with his free wheeling comments :) Phillip duke of edinbourogh
Burfica: I' know exactly what you mean, I've spent may a morning with a screwdriver in the carb and one grounding out the starter so I could start it by myself.
Steven: touche' ;)
BBC: the other three hubcaps were in the trunk after one went missing. It just had to be even. I was known as the $500 car guy until just a couple of years ago when I had to get something safer for the kids.
cheesy: My bumper sticker said "keep laughing I'm reloading" ;) It's almost impossible not to get caught lol
Carrie: I don't have many but the ones I do have seem significant.
helen: Whenever I look at old photos I seem to discover something I had missed previously :)
That's the kind of car that, when you pull up and get out of it people ask "Wow, are you alright?!?"
sornie: actually, they mostly pointed and laughed ;)
Ahhhhh first cars....those were the days :)
And yes, kids always get caught!
Another fine story Hammer, I can't say I had anything similar to that car, but had some I'd definately like to have back from back in the day...
lol, I used to have an 'old junker'. People would always want to drag race me at the lights for some reason. Also, I used to be able to parallel park back into telephone pole and the pole came off worse than the car!
That is the first time I read so much enthusiasm the story of a car. Nice car.
I also started out with an old junk a mini cooper of 1977, so the car was as old as I was. The gear shift was long like an arm and the clutch very far in, it made it difficult to change gears and I had to refill water every time I drove out. lol. Good times.
kb: I should have known, I got grounded for a month for driving to school.
M: I know what you mean! I've taken out a few telephone poles myself :)
Gunz: Me too, I have bad dreams about my old cars being mistreated.
cremiere: Coopers old and new are really popular here. I've done the filling with water thing too with most every car at one time or another :)
