Cars meme

Stucco suggested that we do a meme where we talk about the one car we wish we had back and and also the car we wish we never had.

It's a really tough decision but I would have to say for me the one I wish I had back was my 73 Plymouth Satellite Sebring. It has a funny story to go along with it:

I used to work at a company with my best friend Gary,
I wrote about him here.. His dad (I'll call Johnny) was a VP of manufacturing and making a lot of money. He went through cars like they were kleenex. Gary's dad had borrowed against the company stock and bought a lot of cool grownup toys, corvettes, jeeps, ATVs, and stuff. The stock went tits up and Johnny was fucked when the bank came for the loan. Johnny was a dick to work for and had stolen our Christmas bonus 3 years in a row instead of distributing the money to his employees, so I kinda chuckled when he had to stick all his toys up on the auction block. He was an asshole.

Now near destitute from his unwise money habits Johnny needed a car. He was an intelligent man overall and knew his way around vehicles. He bought a 1973 Plymouth Satellite Sebring. It was white with Avocado top and Avocodo paisley interior. It was in perfect condition and he paid $700 for it.

As soon as Johnny pulled into work driving the Satellite, the other VP's in the company saw it and he became a laughing stock, the other guys invested their stock money and got rich, they were driving Lexus's, Caddies and BMWs.

I broke a commandment and coveted that car. I must have asked to buy it off him a dozen times. It was perfect. I had to have it. Johnny soon got back on his feet and bought a Ford F350 Diesel.

Gary's 1989 mustang convertible was stolen from my apartment complex so he inherited the Satellite. At least I got to ride in it now. Gary was ambivalent, he didn't give a shit about the car and being the nasty slovenly fucker he was, he began abusing the car horribly.

He never changed the oil, He used the back seat for a garbage dumpster. He threw half eaten food over his shoulder as he drove. He went to the river with some of the guys at work and left an ice chest full of meat and beer in the trunk for six months.

I was saddened when I saw the car. The back seat was level full to the windows with stinky garbage, the ice chest full of meat had putrefied and you couldn't get within 10 feet of the car without falling down and puking your guts out.

Gary didn't mind the smell at all. I had to ride in it when my own car broke down and I spent the whole time with my head out the window gagging. I offered to remove the rotten meat bomb but Gary had lost the trunk key. Since it really didn't bother him, it wasn't on his list of priorities.

One day Gary got a hair up his ass about wanting a 68 cougar. So he went and bought one. He got screwed, it was made up of several different cars and a magnet would not stick to any part of the thing. ( all plastic body filler). But Gary was just as impulsive and unwise as his father.

So he parked the satellite in his back yard and left it to rot.

Here was my chance. I sold my Chevy Nova to a friend who had blown up the motor in his car. This started a chain of events. When I get my mind set on something it usually happens.

Gary was starting a new job and didn't have money for the proper dress attire. so I took him to Mervyns with my charge card and said I would buy him $300 worth of clothes if he gave me the Satellite.

Deal!

I drove the poor thing home, it hadn't had an oil change in about 30,000 miles, it kept overheating and the frigging thing wouldn't stay running. The smell had died down a little from the ice chest, so I was able to roll all the windows down and get it home.

Luckily, the outside of the car had so much built up grime that it protected the paint.
I used a shovel to empty the fossilized pizza, burgers and burritos from the back seat. That disgusting mess filled up 5 large black trash bags. Gary was a filthy disturbed fucker....

I soaked a large tube sock with Brute 33 cologne and tied it around my face. The neighbors looked concerned but since this was pre 9/11 it was no big deal.

I drilled the lock on the trunk and opened it...

The blast of hot stench penetrated my protection and about knocked me out. I was almost tempted to open the cooler to see what had transpired over the last 8 months, but my common sense got the better of me. I dragged it next to the apartment dumpster and left it in case someone wanted to claim the ice chest and get a surprise Tee hee.

I changed the oil, added lubralon (great engine restorer) flushed the radiator, changed the plugs and wires, washed and waxed it and steam cleaned the interior.

The car started right up and was perfect again. I was very happy.
I installed a CD player in the glove box and some 6x9 speakers in the trunk. The car sounded great. I could get this car up to 130 on the highway, it had ice cold AC and comfortable bucket seats. Even if they were Dark Green Paisley..

....

One day, I was waiting at a stop sign and a girl in a little Dodge Shadow rear ended me at about 40mph. Her car was flattened up to the firewall, the poor driver had to be taken to the hospital. It dented my trunk a little. Since my car was so old, the adjuster totaled my car. The insurance company gave me $600 and let me buy the car back for $50. I drove it for another year or so. I wasn't too happy about the rear end damage and I couldn't find anyone who would fix the car for under $1500.

.....

One day the AC compressor went out so I took it in and traded it on a loaded 1986 Grand Marquis. They said they would work out any trade so I brought my junker in and got another $500 for it. I wish I had that car or another one like it.

Next post will be about the car I wish I never had.

.....

Anyone who wants to do this meme and write about the car they wish they had back, I'd like to read about it.

I'm not going to do the meme, I've pretty much gotten over automobiles being a tree hugger and wishing that they would just go away.

But three great rigs that I've owned where a....

64 Chrysler 300 convertible, the faster it went the closer it hugged the ground.
78 Merc Zefer Z7 (excuse the spelling)
81 Ford F150 that I installed a souped up Olds 455 in.

But I've grown up and am over those days. Now I want something that gets a 100 miles a gallon and tops out at 60 MPH.

My first car was a 65 VW my dad bought me in 1976. Crazy car didn't even have a heater, it had this lever you pulled up and the air that passed over the engine heated the car. I could drive for a month on a tank of gas, and the one time I backed it into a telephone pole, the basketball team just lifted it off and carried it across the parking lot.

MY 84 NISSAN 4WD was retired appropriately. The last thing it did in its life was die right behing Jim (SuperBowl MVP) Plunket's SUV. Four Oakland Raider Alumni Pro bowl linemen pushed me and my truck up a small hill and out of the way.

It was beautiful, man.

I had a Chevy van I converted to work and play out of. I wish I never sold it...

I had a great Toyota Celica back in college. Blue witha beige interior. Fit a half dozen kids perfectly squished in it when we went out for a pizza or hamburger run late at night from the dorms.
Ran perfect, easy to maintain, great gas mileage...

Hope you have a good Thursday, Hammer !

BBC those are all great vehicles, My dad uses to F150 I gave him to drag dead trees and haul feed. Very reliable. the 300 is a classy looking Vehicle and with the Hemi..yeow.

kat: I loved my VW, though I kept burning my ankles on the weird heat thing on the floor lol

Scott: The nissan's were like tanks
I've owned a couple and loved them.

jeannie: I always wanted a convertable, a sun roof just doesn't cut it.

jingoistic: Americans like big cars because of family road trips.
When we get in the car for a 12 hour drive a little room and comfort goes a long way.

The Celicas were great, Cute dependable little cars. Perfect for college.

I had a 94 Grand Am for 3 years, the car was great. It was fast, got good gas mileage, and was reliable. I had to get rid of it after my freshman year in college because the coolant system was messing up and my dad and I were tired of screwing around with it. I still got $1,500 for it, it helped me pay off my new car fast.

I wish I had my 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII back. It started having various things go wrong and everything always cost a small fortune to repair. Hubby convinced me to sign it over to him (we do all our financial stuff separate so that we don't argue over THAT). He bought me a new loaded Volvo S60 (I think it was)and I hated that car. So he bought me a new loaded Silverado that was just awesome. After we separated the first time, he took it away - alas....

Was that car #251? I am still going back to your other post trying to imagine what it would be like to have owned that many cars.

For the record - my first car was '76 dodge dart 2 door hardtop 318 that ran better than well.

I hit an Elk with it. That ended my car days.

In nearly every post, you say at least one thing that creates the funniest mental images, that's it for me with this post.

I haven't had many cars, but I'll try to do this meme. I already wrote a rough draft about my first car, a 1970 Buick Electra 225, the legendary "deuce and a quarter."

Gary and his Dad sound like real pieces of work.

Laughed my ass off about the surprise whoever picked up the cooler got. Mean, but true.

Sweet car. Now, if I had one like that I could modify to run on bathtub gin...

And if I thought your pal wasn't disgusting before, I do now. I thought you said he got better about that when he grew up.

Brandon: the grand am V6 was quick but like you said was plagued by cooling problems.

Nomas: The 88 MKVIII was one I drooled over it was one of the first of the new generation luxury sports sedans with 300HP

Ryan: My dart only had the slant 6 it would still go fast if given enough time, Still those were very reliable cars.

I remember the electra 225 being fancy, I rode in a 67 and was very impressed, Gary is a good guy but kinda messed up, Johnny, is ok as long as you don't work for him or do business with him.

Carrie: the jettas are great cars everyone I talk to loves them.

JP my uncle had a Yellow superbee with a 383, I bet he wishes he still had it.

ISU: The cooler was gone the next day, not sure who got it though, gary slowly got better but still has nasty moments.

my `69 cadillac coupe.

hearse black with a tan interior that i wasn`t really fond of but the car was absolutely perfect.

i bought it in 1985 for $1800 and it had almost 30,000 original miles on it.

colossal power and reasonable mileage for a 472 cubic inch engine.

it would outpull a camaro at 80 miles an hour.

we would go cruise yonge street in toronto and get more eyeballs than ferraris and mercedes.

i sold it to a bloke who took it to sweden and it sat in the stockholm cadillac collector`s museum for some years.

i want to find another one one day and, well, you know........drive it.

i`m frankly not sure if i want to own a car any longer though.

they aren`t fun any more.

i can run my bicycle at 100 miles a gallon and go 60 mph (downhill.)

that kind of exercise is great for the heart as well.

Cool post. My first and only true love when it comes to cars was my very first car: 1972 Volkswagon Super Beetle. It was a 3-speed automatic, with white exterior, red vinyl seats and a ram-air heating system. It only had 30,000 original miles, 'cause my grandfather had bought it the year I was born as a toolin' around car and then decided to stop driving it till I was old enough to have it. Man, I miss that car.

Well after investing in my 'current' ride: A Ford f350, I look back on all the rest and don't miss anything I ever had and I can't see myself in anything else in the future.

I've tried trucks of various makes and models over the years and being a tall 6-5 and on the 'big' side I finally found a truck that can transport my 'half' giraffe self...
