A ray of hope! Someone finally gets it.

Article

Mohammed Yunus and the Grameen Bank won the Nobel peace prize for making micro loans to impoverished people in 3rd world nations so they could get on their feet and start producing.

What a concept! Our nation has been throwing food and grain at these people for the better part of 40 years and they are just as poor as when we started.

When you give something to another person it has no value. When a person has to work for something, it all of the sudden gains an intrinsic importance and worth far greater than any handout.

Where would we be right now if all the billions we have dumped overseas had been small loans of operating capital and economic advisement? Liberals...wake up and smell the couscous. Welfare doesn't work.

There was and is a huge problem with Chicago's public housing. Graffiti, rats, garbage, shootings, housing dilapidated and torn up. People rented these apartments or they were living there for free. The situation was out of control to say the least.

Someone in the local government had a bright idea, why not renovate some of these housing units and put poor people in them for $50 per month and at the end of 5 years they would own their own apartment.

I bet you can guess what happened. These people took pride in their new homes kept them clean, maintained and safe. These former slum tenants drove out the drugs and gangs themselves. They had gained pride and hope for a future they could pass on to their kids.

Why are we not doing more of this?

Simply there is too little room for corruption, what big business can pay a kickback on such a small business?

Show me the money...

Dude the whole thing goes down to the fact that government looks at all of us paternalistically and only really cares about it's own empowerment. They think that they are the only ones who can ensure that everyone has equality, even if it means equality of poverty and depression. Used to think it was a liberal thing, but it turns out that conservatives are into it too, just in different ways. What the hell business is it of anyone in government if tow gay guys want to experience the sexless hell that marriage is for most strait men? Turns out the founding generation had it down... government is a necessary evil, and we should limit it's power at every turn. The "nanny state" has GOT to go.

Hell. I hear you. Government interference has never solved poverty. Leave it to a small time entreprenuer to open a micro bank and lend money $100 at a time.

These people are buying cows, ice cream carts, food stands
etc..Scraping themselves out of poverty. What a concept!
