The reunion went well I guess. It was frigging hot. 18 holes of golf almost killed me in 103 degree heat. Good thing we had golfers gatorade (cold beer) We would buy a few at the clubhouse then head over to the truck to load up with our own cheaper store bought . I didn't play as well as last year. I did have a couple good 240 yard drives but the heat was kicking my ass.
No fireworks this year..they said it was too dry but I really think the town lacked the money to put on the show.
There were 3 main families there and each was responsible for a meal. My brother in law has been working as a cook for about 10 years so he made pasta, I did the salad and mother in law made desert. We got to work in a small professional kitchen so that was pretty cool. I also learned a few things about making mass quantities of food and using the proper equipment.
We stayed up late and drank beer with some cousins, cut up and joked around. We were sure we made enough noise to wake up the ultra baptists and piss them off with our demon alcohol and devil music. Everyone kept telling me to move the party away from the main hotel but I said fuck it. I'm almost 40 years old what the hell do I have to be afraid of? It's not like I'm 16 sneaking booze out of my dad's liquor cabinet. Some of my counterparts from other families act like dogs that have been kicked too much..they are fun to be around but always have their tail between their legs afraid of their wives and mothers in law scolding them.
I'm proud to say my wife was right there with me matching me beer for beer...the only time I get yelled at is when I don't get them open fast enough...
Needless to say I was a little worse for wear the next morning when we had to get up and load the car. Thankfully the kids are old enough to do a lot of the work.
My sister in law and her husband ignored repeated calls and warnings that we were taking family pictures. We waited 30 minutes and then took them without her. They were really pissed off and making a scene so I said fuck off and got in the car while they did the pictures all over again just for her. I would have given her the benefit of the doubt but this is the 3rd year in a row she's pulled this bullshit. Everyone was acting like I was the bad guy for not wanting to be in the middle of their screaming bullshit. Fuck them. I don't do drama.

Good for you! I don't do drama anymore either. Life's too short for that shit!
Not with family, for it will take a BS argument and drag it our for years.
Frankly I just don't need that.
And a good time was had by all - each according to his kind.
Every one of us is from a dysfunctional family! I told my children many times (when they were teens) it's a dysfunctional world we live in; therefore it is my responsibility to create dysfuncional children, in order for them to be able to function!
Your crew sounds 'normal' to me!
Ahhh...the posts in blogs which could be written!!!!!

Huh, we don't really have anyone in my family to compare that too. Lots of devout Christians, but they don't judge so much, or jam it down unwilling throats.
We do have a vegan/ballerina married in, but she doesn't even preach Peta.
I'm missing something : (
"My brother in law has been working as a cook for about 10 years so he made pasta,"
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or if your BIL really made some fantastic pasta dish...hmmm...well since it's you Hammer, I am going to go with sarcasm...:-) Too Funny.
Good for you. Screw the attention starved drama whores who can't "go with the flow". You don't need that, family get togethers should be fun not stressful.
PS- Great house by the way. Very cool.
Hammer,
Welcome back Bro...Overall, I guess you had a good time..
Welcome home. Hope your ready to mix some drinks...
I am 55 and have not been involved in that family drama stuff for years. Many of my relatives think I dislike them personally, when in fact I just can't be bothered with other peoples rubbish.
Good for you sitting in the car. If they can't organise themselves for something that simple you don't want them anywhere near when TSHTF.
Glad it went well, well except for the drama.
It always seems that there is one drama lama in every crowd. Glad you stood firm and had a good time.
Good for you. At some point, as we age, we lose the capacity to put up with childish bullshit, knowing that there's nothing they can do to us. It's very liberating, particularly when you've been brought up around it. You don't have to put up with, as an adult, with the same shit we took as kids.
Screw the drama llama and her mama mama.
Sounds like fun for the most part. I hate all that family drama stuff too. My families are full of it - on both sides. I need to learn how to walk away.
That really tough playing golf and 103 and all...man, glad I don't have to endure that kind of torture. Just 105 in a 6x6 cement box is all, but that nothing compared to that big golf course where you gotta run free with all that heat and shit. Boy I sure don't envy your ass. Hell I get a family reunion every Thursday and my old lady get to have a strip search too! Damn, I'm sure glad I don't have to put up with all that abuse like you man.
All in all, sounds pretty good!
I don't do drama. ... especially when worn from the night before and the cars loaded and ready! ;)
one of nancpop's favorite jokes: "the only place two baptists NEVER recognize one another is at the party store." in his case it is true - he saw a "pastor" there who acted like he'd never seen him before - all the while pop was trying to get his attention!
one of my pentecostal friends whose husband has a semi-drinking problem (he binges about two or three times a year during hunting season) asks me, "doesn't it bother you that pop drinks beer?" me, "no, it bothers me when he DOESN'T!"
One thing I really like about your blog is that you have such a succinct style, such a way with words. No passive-aggressiveness at all! Keep up the good work. One of these days some of the rest of us may take our lead from you and feel a hell of a lot better for having done that too! I can't for the life of me though see how playing golf in virtually any temperature is fun, but then, a whole hell of a lot of folks would never get enjoyment out of some of the things I do either. Right?
18 holes in 103 temps, golfers gateraid, lots of drinking and a stick in the mud relative. There is allways one. I have one of those in my brood as well. Like you, I stopped doing drama many years ago and life got a lot easier.
Dang, it has alread been a year?
I remember reading last years reunion report.
I heard said once, that friends are God's way of making up for the family you get saddled with.
Although my family gets along well, I realize that I'm lucky in that regard.
