This seems kind of creepy
Cat predicts deaths in nursing home
My question is: when the cat curls up on the elderly person do they freak out and die just because the cat supposedly chose them for death?
I'd keep my frigging door shut

Cat predicts deaths in nursing home

I would stay in my room with the door shut. That is weird.
Reason number 316 why I don't have a cat. That's just creepy. Not at all surprising though, animals are very intuitive.
when the dead loved ones of the dying patient come to ease them into the next level...the cat sees the ghosts of the relatives and is drawn to them...or else he's hungry and senses a meal on its way. A cat will eat a dead body if it's hungry enough. If you die and leave your cat without any food...and nobody comes to find you...he'll eat your dead body to survive. Oscar is looking for some meat.
JP - that's gross but probably accurate
I don't particularly like cats
No wonder they used to think they were familiars.
Mind you I've heard of dogs who could sniff out cancer.
I AM a cat lover . Although this one is a bit creepy, if it allows the family more time to prepare I can't see it as a bad thing. He is cute but I like my cats friendly and cuddly not "businesslike".
I think at that age or state of being i'd welcome the cat, you know to move on... that's just me though
Maybe this is just me, but I've heard of this sort of thing happening on a smaller scale for YEARS, with cats and dogs alike. Birds will do it, too...the owner will be sitting there, fine as they can be, most of them elderly, and suddenly the animal will be practically up their asses. The person is followed around, or if they're in a chair or in bed, the animals lays (or sits, in the birds' cases) on them, and won't leave. It usually happened just a few hours before they die. Sudden deaths due to heart attacks...slow deaths due to cancer...it doesn't matter. Most animals can tell when you're gonna die. This cat just has more opportunities to do so than most.
Sorry, that kind of turned into a rant.
snowmanpoop: Me too :)
tysgirl: they are indeed.
jp:I think cats are just around for the perks.
jeannie: since dogs sense of smell is 6000 times greater than a humans I believe it
canadian: I like cuddly too, not grim reaper...
fe-fi-fo In some cases that would be the best.
squeeky: I agree totally well said.
I'll add pets grieve and cannot move on if they are not allowed to sniff the body.
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

I really really hate cats....however I can see how it would be convenient in that environment to have an early warning system.
my cat has followed me, talked to me, slept near me and climbed into my lap in front of the tv every night for 11 years...still here. I guess when I can't find him I should worry!
I'd get a dog.
It's mind over matter...if you think the cat is predicting your death, then why bother anymore? The elderly need to keep a positive outlook, as do we all, give the little kitty some catnip, and begin to enjoy each day they have...and get some livelier pets!

I'd seriously be one of those oldies that would plant the cat in people's rooms just because I wanted to freak them out!
I saw that story and the patients are unconscious (at least that's what was said).
My mom was unnerved when Spot started sleeping by her bed, she thought he knew she was going to die. I think he was just upset and looking for a little comfort. He stopped sleeping in her room a few days ago so she's happy. She still gets creeped out if I go someplace on my own and the phone rings and he howls, she thinks he knows it's bad news. (not so far, I'm still here!)
I'd pet him and say thank you because I think it is an angel of comfort....
I loved the comments. I agree with you, hammer.
I'm agreeing with the last part of the article. The cat is attracted to the "death smell". Maybe a hangover from the feral days of hunting and waiting until the food was just cold to take a bite. I just hope he purrs for the folks to ease their way.
BTW, not afraid of the Cat of Death because, I'm not a Fraidy Cat.
Hahaha, maybe the cat is poisonous? Baybe it's flea collar has some chemical in it that asphixiates the old person!!!! I don't know why I found this funny, but I did!!! I must have an evil streak of some sort!!!
I would get like twenty or thirty replicas of him made and put them in the beds of all the residents early one morning ---then do a head count- That would be funny!
But then again--nah---- it would be funny as hell- watching them put on their glasses and look down--- he he he!

It needs more cat bell.
I find it pretty amazing.
