Things I've learned
Knee jerk reactions usually cause bigger problems than the one you are reacting to.
When faced with an issue, it's best to sit down and think it out before you do or say something you will later regret.
Most problems solve themselves, that's the way the world works. Things tend to naturally move towards equilibrium . Some silly humans actually believe that our fretting and thrashing about amounts to something in the grand scheme of things.
When it is time to take action you will know it. Fight or flight...or tactical withdrawl.
A recent study confirms that drinking 2 or more cups of coffee per day decreases the chances of getting alzheimers by 60%.
The media is full of shit. Pretty much every news story, no matter how mundane is filled with inaccuracies, lies and political spin. I don't know what drives this, but whenever I research a headline and go to the source, there facts are much different than reported.
For example, a few months back the media reported that a 90 year old black lady shot herself in the chest just as county deputies were serving an eviction notice. "This poor soul would rather die than leave the home she had been in for 38 years"
Something just didn't smell right, Why would a home she had for almost 40 years not be paid for?
I read the police report on the incident a month later. Turns out she took out a second 30 year mortgage on the home 5 years prior and bought a bunch of worthless shit. With no income she couldn't pay it back. They tried to contact the lady 30 times to talk to her about the loan and she would not answer the door. A neighbor climbed up a ladder to tell her deputies were outside when she shot herself.
Turns out they are forgiving the loan and giving her the house....I wonder if she is going to take out another 30 year mortage now?

Yup - the more we work to fix things, seems the more messed up they get. Wish politicians would learn that.
We were always amazed at the spin on new in N. Ireland (where my husband is from) during the "troubles" You rarely heard of the atrocities the IRA pulled over and over (bombing was a regular occurrence) Here it was only the protestant militants you'd hear about. Occasionally the IRA would be mentioned but never as being Catholic. Gee, wonder what side the media was on. And now they've started up again. I suppose with the poor economy, the IRA isn't making as much with the drugs as they had been and have to get back in the "protection" racket.
Perception is reality!
The media has a perception of the truth. Then they 'report' it.
Ahhhh...remember the good old days, when there was only an hour of news on the TV each day. No time for editors to spin the words.
News was that....N-E-W-S!

One of the many reasons I don't like watching (or reading) the news. They're always leaving something out, so it's tough to form an opinion without having the facts...and you never get all the facts. In other words, I have little to say about what's reported by the media.
You are right. I look at the news almost all day. I am sure its not accurate. I remember the story about the 90 year old lady. You are right I will not owe on my house when I am 90! Maybe she figured hell I am 90 I will get what I want and wont live long enough to pay it back.
Amazing. I wonder why I bust my but to pay my bills.
If that's true, then I shouldn't have to to worry about Alzheimer's. If coffee could prevent regular absent-mindedness, I would be in REALLY good shape.
Jeannie: thanks for the lesson on Northern Ireland..I've noticed that they are portrayed rather kindly in the media as well.
Airman mom: I'm starting to miss the days of 3 channels and the test pattern at 2am
Scarlet: yes they like to leave important things out. often times something that is embarassing to their cause like the race of the perpetrator.
FHB: yeah all we have to do is make fannie mae feel sorry for us and we get a free house.
Alan: I just got into coffee myself, as I get older it gets harder to get started at 5am. I'll take the side benefits as well.
Michelle: You are absolutely right The lady thought she wouldn't live long enough to have to pay back the loan. The shooting herself part turned out to be the sympathy card she needed to get her house back.
hammer...I also miss the 10 o'clock news... "It's 10 o'clock, do you know where your children are?"

How's the state of education in your neck of the woods? In California they are making big cut backs and a lot of teachers are losing their jobs.
airman mom: yep I remember that well.
Yoga Gal: Our Schools are funded almost completely by property taxes which haven't gone down much so we are in good shape. Because even if the bank forecloses they still have to pay the county tax bill.
I'm one of those people who "thrashes and frets about." It's not that I really believe it does me any good whatsoever. I think I'm just genetically predisposed. I can't help it.
Terri: Me too. that's how I learned about it :D
The first part of what you said most especially rang true with me. I have learned to keep my mouth shut and not react to every little thing. You would be amazed at how peaceful life can be if you ignore half of the stupidity dealt by others.
Great post!
Well, I see that another of your commenters has the idea about the coffee thing as I do! Considering the fact that I frequently indulge myself with at least two pots of coffee a day, sometimes more (course my daughter drinks some of it too, so it isn't that I am drinking that much by myself) but any way, if there bit about the coffee should actually be true, then I am way, way ahead of the game against getting Alzheimers. Unfortunately, I think it's going to take more coffee than I can drink as the darned senility kicked in on me a long, long time ago. Near as I can calculate, it was about the time my first child was born. Haven't been worth a tinker's damn in the memory department since then.
If we all took the attitude of looking out for each other. We wouldn't have to worry about ourselves...
Some things just make you scratch your head.

Any bank that would grant a mortgage to an 85 year old person needs to be investigated...Well, the debt is paid, now, eh?
Just heard on the radio this morning that the evicted lady has died.
Woman who shot herself when facing eviction dies in nursing home
I'll be damned...thanks for the update Dan O.
In the article they are still blaming the bank even though this lady took out 3 mortages on this house in 10 years.
