It's a fair trade

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090326/ap_on_bi_ge/states_welfare_with_strings

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Want government assistance? Just say no to drugs.
Lawmakers in at least eight states want recipients of food stamps, unemployment benefits or welfare to submit to random drug testing.
The effort comes as more Americans turn to these safety nets to ride out the recession. Poverty and civil liberties advocates fear the strategy could backfire, discouraging some people from seeking financial aid and making already desperate situations worse.

To me this is just common sense.

Drugs are expensive. If someone has money to buy drugs they have money to buy food, shelter, clothing etc.. Why in the hell should my Tax dollars be used to subsidize somone's crack or meth habit.

My Uncle has a step daughter that sells her $1000 in monthly foodstamps for half face value and then she buys drugs with the proceeds. She has 5 kids from 5 different "homies" and when her kids start crying from hunger this bitch drops them off at my uncle's house so he can feed and care for them while she goes out and finds more sperm "donors".

You can't make me believe that drug testing welfare recipients is a bad idea. People that work for a living have to piss in cups all the time. Why not the people who benefit from our free money.

The ACLU says that drug addicts might not apply for welfare and food stamps if they think they may be tested....Ohhh Noooooo! How terrible! We all have choices in this world. Wrong choices have consequences.

I have a strong feeling that if we required mandatory piss testing of welfare applicants the welfare rolls would decrease 60%. They should go a step further and make sure that these people don't drink or smoke either.

If someone is genuinely homeless and their family is starving, drugs and alcohol should be the last things on their minds.

ITA- some kind of random schedule for recipients to come in and be tested. The money won't come until they have passed the piss test.

Just this past month, I have been hearing a radio commercial for a home drug test kit. It supposed to test for all kinds of shit.

This sounds like a good idea for me for my DD when she gets a bit older. (Yah, I do NOT Trust any child- even my own- when it comes to peer pressure about drugs, they are all sheep- bah, bah,)

I agree. You know the libs and the ACLU will have a field day on this one. If you are getting dole money, you should be tested, and if you fail the test not be allowed to get more for at least a year.

I had to piss in a cup for 4 years when I worked for a contractor to Lone Star Gas Company (Atmos Energy Now). It pissed me off to no end, I was busting my ass and had to PIAC but some lazy welfare recipient got to sit on there fat government cheese fed ass and smoke/sell dope all day.

This idea is a no-brainer and should have been implemented YEARS ago! If the ACLU doesn't like it, they can kiss my hard-working ass!

I 100% agree there. It should be mandatory, and benefits denied if they are using.

Absolutely. So, if they don't apply for welfare then what? Their children suffer? You mean they aren't already? Perhaps they should have children's residences where the crackhead mother's can go visit their kids but not stay. The kids can be clothed, fed and kept safe. Have it attached to an old folks home so there can be some back and forth visiting and mutual affection between forgotten generations.

Hammer,

I could not agree with you more. The issue I have is that this message should not be coming from the States. It should be coming from the top. Why isn't the Obama Administration taking into account these people instead of doing the "Go after the Wealthy" witch hunt?

They worry more about the test rather than worrying about giving money to drug addicts? Come on! It doesn't many sense, but then if it did, it'd be too easy. I hate to sound cynical but this kind of thing doesn't surprise me anymore.

Those state lawmakers are on to something! My state lawmakers are ON something and they should be made to pee in the bottle.

I have sent you some of mine to test - I hope the bottle does not leak or get smashed in the post!

Drug testing for office holders, and breathalyzer for when they come to work, making and signing laws.

Let me see if I understand: there are laws against smoking on the beach or condo patio and in bars & restaurants, against foie gras in Chicago, they're talking about "smart" thermostats for the government to tell you when to shut off lights and turn the heat down and a/c up, helmet laws for bikers, but when it comes to getting free money from the government, a person can be a walking pharmacy and it's okay.

My initial thought on hearing this news was, "It's about damned time!" But then my less government side kicked in and I had to wonder where we draw the line because each time we move it, it gets a little closer to us

The not so common common sense.

That should include alcohol testing too.

You don't possibly think that perhaps bad choices about drugs and alcohol had anything to do with the CAUSE of most of these folks on government assistance becoming leeches?

Maybe?

Poor choices cause bad things to happen.

And now over half the country thinks we need to support lazy unproductive people because... Because... Because it keeps getting the Politicians re-elected.

Now who would be testing these hoards of welfare recipients? And where does it end?

It is a well known fact that during hard times drug and alcohol abuse increases. it's a vicious cycle.

I think they should sterilize chronic welfare Moms who keep producing like rabbits. Oh and get the dead beat dads fixed while you are at it.

Postively super. When can we push this through congress? $^&* the ACLU!

Instead of giving welfare, why not just give out drugs for free (seriously). This would result in breaking the back of organized crime as well as crimes committed by drug addicts to finance their habit. The money saved from trying to regulate the drug trade and control organized crime could be better spent on improving the health system.

Yep, make 'em piss in a can. When they get off the dole they can light up again.

Oh I agree! I actually put a post about that on my blog. Give the help to people who deserve it not people who dont care about themselves or anyone else.

I'm a less government type, too, but my beef is that welfare exists in it's present form at all, if it exists it should be for a set amount of time and then that's it, no more benefits ever.
As far as the drug testing goes, if you take Caesar's coin you agree to his rules; if not, not. Ain't freedom a bitch?

The money saved from trying to regulate the drug trade and control organized crime could be better left in the taxpayer's pocket where it damn well belongs in the first place.
