Cheney bucks Bush administration

Source

WASHINGTON — Vice President Cheney took the unusual step Friday of joining with lawmakers in signing a Supreme Court brief that goes further in support of gun rights than the one submitted by the Bush administration.

The filings were made in a case that challenges the District of Columbia's ban on handguns. It was scheduled to be argued on March 18.

Both briefs argue that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to own guns. However, the administration contends that too categorical a ruling could threaten other federal gun restrictions and wants the justices to send the case back to lower courts without deciding whether the handgun ban should fall.

Cheney joined more than 300 senators and representatives, led by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who want the court to rule that Washington's ban is unconstitutional.

"The vice president believes strongly in Second Amendment rights," Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell said.

Seventeen Democratic lawmakers and District of Columbia Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton urged the court to uphold the ban.

Lawyers with long experience at the court could not recall another case in which a vice president took a position different from that of his own administration.

I'm really dissapointed that Bush will not do the right thing for the people of Washington DC and support their right to bear arms. I've always thought Cheney was a good statesman and now I have reason to respect his courage in taking a stand against his own administration.

I would absolutely support your right to bear arms. However, don't get me started on the bushman... why just today I posted the countdown 'til he's out of office clock on my blog. Guess we just might disagree on a few things?? LOL That's okay, I still LOVE your blog. ;)

For the most part, I do support the NRA, the second amendment, etc. -a few things I think could be maybe looked at a little differently perhaps, but anyway, that's beside the point right now.
Personally, I think having Cheney as somewhat of a leader, spokesperson of sorts for the NRA's cause is unwise. Why would you want someone who obviously has not taken a gun safety course trying to present your cause?
Just thinking there that having Cheney involved on the NRA's behalf may not be the best choice, is it?

Not that any of this would make much of a difference where I live. Guns are here to stay.

nanc: In this current crop we could use him!

crystalchick: I'm not happy with his presidency either and I'm even more unhappy about the next guy.

jeni: He made a grave error and apologized but I do think the NRA has distanced themselves from him somewhat. Actually Cheney is doing this all on his own possibly leading to the overturn of some of the most restrictive and ridiculous victim disarmament laws across this nation.

scarlet: I agree but this supreme court decision could bring all the other states in line as well.

Finally, seven years into his term we may have something positive to remember Cheney by.

Whether people agree with him or not, at least he has the balls to stand up and voice his opinion even if it differs from his bosses.

Amen Hammer.....completely agree.

Cheney must however be given "Any" gun he owns with a limit of a 3 feet projectile range!

Could you "honestly imagine" what would happen in America if they EVER tried to take our Guns? I mean honestly... what do you think would happen short of complete anarchy and well........you know- trouble!

jeff: I wish more politicians would show such balls.

john: Amen! They've tried to do it incrementally but the current administration has set the scheme back 30 years.

Dana: He is a very smart guy I'm just not sure what his legacy is going to be.

I thought this was going to end with Cheney shooting someone by mistake again.

Shucks.

I agree with Jeff B! Sometimes "lame ducks" can use their power for good things.

I think he's doing the right thing.

But, you just know the moonbat anti-gun sheep are gonna bring up the Cheney hunting thing again.

Guess none of them ever caused a car accident? Maybe we should take away their cars.

I won't express any idea about this very touchy subject in America.

He's obviously got nothing to lose now, so why not go with your conscience.

jocelyn: That would be the SNL version ;)

tshsmom: yep there is nothing for him to lose at this point.

plegmy: anyone who has seen an interview with him would agree.

dan o: Yep that is good comparison. Guns are a really sore subject and easy to pick on.

kitem: The main problem is that Washington DC bans all guns but has the highest gun murder rate in America. Apparently the law abiding are left totally defenseless.

FHB: I wish more would just do that in the first place but then of course the wouldn't be a politician.

A whole lot of Bush Derangement Syndrome has washed over onto Mr. Cheney.

Good for him.

I have supported President Bush, but certainly NOT in all things. I'm glad Mr. Cheney followed his own thinking in this area, in favoring what's in the constitution over what policies might be popular right now.
