Much of this wouldn't be allowed in Canada - safety regs would require the landowners to pull down unsafe buildings. Didn't realize there were areas like this - I've seen some seedy areas in Detroit but not this bad. This didn't just happen - these buildings have been a mess for years.
None of these areas started this way. As late as the 50's and 60's, they were still well kept. Gary has plenty of areas like this that I remember as a child 30 years ago as being the high falutin parts of town. How can somewhere be nice when one group of people live there, then look like this when another group displaces them? The answer is terribly un-PC. But I will say that the reason a lot of people's nads draw up into their chests and they throw out the for sale sign pronto once diversity moves in the neighborhood is not hatred for a group, but fear that they will get stuck in the middle of this type of environment. This is no one's imagination or unfounded fear, as the video shows.
Amazing how quickly a house goes to $h!t once some scumbag pulls all the pipes, windows and anything with scrap value in order to sell it to buy drugs. Did you see that Winnebago stripped down? Enough aluminum scrap there to amp up a neighborhood's worth of crackies.
What's with all the boats? Guess they sold the trailers for scrap...

Nah, man, the houses were toast long before the scrapper came and stripped them. The fact they were derelict gave the scrappers confidence to strip them in the first place. Or a bum would start a fire to stay warm and burn the place up.
I think of the old Poles and Slovaks who built these Detroit neighborhoods, and who took immense pride in their upkeep, and how they'd collectively puke if they saw the place now. Not just the look; the abject misery.
Oh, when they rebuilt Seward Park in Chicago in the early 2000's, people from nearby projects came by and smashed a lot of the new fixtures. Asked why they vandalized them, they said the park was no longer "street" and "ghetto", and they were trying to keep it real. It's not income level; it's a mindset.
Sad, scary place. There's a town near me that looks similar... on a smaller scale. Used to be really nice when my parents were growing up. I only go if absolutely necessary during the day and never at night.
I REALLY LIKE WHAT YOU WROTE AND THE WAY YOU PUT IT! THANKS FOR A GREAT COMMENT ON SUCH A HORRIBLE SUBJECT AND WASTE OF SPACE.
UNTIL WE TURN THAT "MINDSET" AROUND, HOWEVER, WE ARE GOING TO GET WHAT WE SEE. I THINK IF THERE WERE MORE A SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT OR OWNERSHIP SOME PLACES WOULD BE BETTER KEPT. BUT IT'S HARD TO REVERSE 40 YEARS OF MINDSET!!!!
Detroit was one of our baseball parks to visit while on our BucketListVacay...so terribly sad. the couple of blocks around the 2 stadiums was really nice...fortunately it was a 1pm game. walking around after dinner was not an option, we found a couple of stools at the hotel bar and called it a night. This is America!?!?!?! SO very sad! ~AM
I have to admit we have bad area's here in green bay you dont want to go in but I have never seen it this bad as what the video showed. Like Jeannie most buildings like that have to torn down either but the owner or the city will come in and do it..
It hard to even believe that this was filmed in the United States. How was this allowed to happen. Why? I see now why these houses are selling for a $1.00. Its sad to say that a $1.00 is even too much. I may to steal this post for my blog. Welcome back Hammer!! I have missed you!
Shamefully and disgustingly disturbing. At first I thought all the burned out houses were insurance claims, but I guess it does make sense if they were abandoned or bank owned that the homeless might use them for shelter and inadvertently burn them down. If my eyes did not trick me, I thought I saw 'Poloce Parking' spray painted on side of brick building somewhere near the start. If so, this would indicate just how broke the city is and the limited capacity within which they work. To me, it looks like a national disaster.
Yeah. Pretty trashy. Then again, the people who live in the area should take more pride in themselves instead of succumbing to the status quo. Why is it that people always wait for someone else to 'fix it'?
I don't live far from Dtown. Go a bit north to Flint Mi...worse if you can imagine. Your first responders last sentence about "waiting for someone to fix it", well with this new administration, people will have even a better fucking excuse to wait for someone to fix it, since the government is doing everything for everybody anyway, makes me fucking sick. And FYI, there is yet worse places in Detroit. And for anyone thinking of moving to Michigan, unless you are extremely selective about your city, OR have a ton of cash, stay where you are, Granholm has fucked us royally. On the upside, I'm for the most part a positive person ;)

Its amazing to me that in this land of plenty, there are places like this...

Been through downtown Detroit once, and gotta say that it reminded me a good bit of Sarajevo and Bosnia when I was there.
I also need to show my wife this video, seeing she wants to move back to Michigan, even if it is Upper Peninsula.

two minutes was all i could take - to think people who call themselves "americans" live this way. no pride.
Bleak, desolate, ruination, a sad sad state of affairs.
That made me feel ill.

I think, John, that you mean less entitlement, and more ownership. They're fairly nearly opposites.
This is an example of orcish behavior. Once I'm back on the writer's horse I'll elucidate. But it's all there in the LoTR appendices.

I have seen some spooky stuff Hammer but you just iced the cake....WTF
Conserv. Scalawag: The U.P. looks NOTHING like down town Detroit.
My parents are moving there to get away from crap like this video.

Holy crap! Who bombed Detroit?
Looks like footage from Fallujah...
I thought a tornado had hit somewhere!
hurry back, you are missed.
This is very, very sad
Places like that come in handy when some director wants to film a new disaster movie. Why build a set?
looks like hamilton ontario. once industry leaves an area this is bound to happen.
the only place i`ve personally seen that was worse was london in the sixties.
and that was because it had been bombed to shit.
story to go with your vid.
